So many of our international guests wonder what on earth we refer to when we mention ‘the common close’ which is the entrance of our West Highland Apartments, so what is this mysterious ‘common close’ we refer to, well here is the detail.

A common close, also known as a tenement close or simply a close, is a term used in Scotland to refer to a shared entrance or passageway that provides access to multiple residential units within a building. It is typically a narrow and enclosed space located between buildings or within a building, leading from the street to the individual flats or apartments. The term "close" comes from the Scots language, which means an enclosed or enclosed space. Common closes are a characteristic feature of traditional Scottish tenement buildings, which are multi-story buildings that house multiple dwellings.

So there you have it, West Highland Apartments will greet you with this part of terminology and history.

It’s often asked where we recommend for our guests to walk, and top of the line for all WHA guests is Milngavie Waterworks, which is a flat circular route of 5k, and around 10 mins from the front door of The Nevis or The Lomond.

A brief WHA history lesson about the Waterworks is as follows:

Established in the late 19th century, it originally supplied fresh water to the growing population of Glasgow. The waterworks played a vital role in improving public health and sanitation during a time when access to clean water was limited. Over the years, the facility underwent modernization and expansion to meet the increasing demand. Today, Milngavie Waterworks continues to provide safe and reliable water supply to the region, reflecting its legacy of contributing to the well-being of the local community.

Try and go to see the beautiful morning Sunrise or Sunset followed by a coffee or bite to eat, the view over Glasgow is stunning up there.

Is Milngavie a ‘town’ or ‘village’ but what’s the difference:

A town and a village are both human settlements, but they differ in terms of size and organization. Towns are larger and more developed, often having a higher population and offering a wider range of services, amenities, and infrastructure. They typically have a central business district, commercial areas, and various public facilities. Villages, on the other hand, are smaller and more rural, often characterized by a tight-knit community and a slower pace of life. They usually have fewer services and amenities, relying more on nearby towns or cities for certain needs. Villages are often associated with agriculture and simpler lifestyles.

We will let you decide when you come and see us at West Highland Apartments and enjoy the beautiful area.
