🍷 FIRENZE. LE BUCHETTE DEL VINO. DOVE TROVARLE

🇬🇧

In Florence, wine is sold from windows, known as “vino” holes. These small openings in the historic buildings, in use since the 17th century, allowed the direct sale of wine without intermediaries such as innkeepers. Florentine noble families, such as Antinori and Frescobaldi, converted part of their businesses into agricultural land and wine production to ensure stable incomes, selling wine directly from their residences via holes.

The wine holes not only facilitated the sale, but also had a beneficial function, allowing food and wine to be left to the needy. Architecturally, they were small decorated arched doors, connected to the cellars of the palaces. Also called “vino” tabernacles, they offered a sober appearance thanks to the smooth or ashlar stone frames.

In 1634, during the plague, holes were used for anti-contagion purposes, as reported by the academic Francesco Rondinelli.

Today, wine holes are back in fashion, becoming a trend in catering. As of January 2024, nine Florentine venues use them, helping to make this tradition a social and tourist phenomenon.
