Situated in southwest England, Exmoor National Park stands as a breath taking natural wonder, offering visitors unparalleled opportunities to reconnect with nature. Among the park’s standout features lies its designation as a Dark Sky Reserve, rendering it a prime destination for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts alike.

A Dark Sky Reserve is an area renowned for its exceptional quality of starry nights and dedication to mitigating light pollution. This designation aims to safeguard and maintain the natural darkness of the night sky, enabling visitors to marvel at the beauty of stars, planets, and celestial objects without disruption from artificial light sources.

Exmoor National Park earned its Dark Sky Reserve status in 2011, becoming the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe. Encompassing over 267 square miles, the reserve offers an unmatched opportunity to behold the wonders of the night sky in all its splendour.

Butterflies in flight - For many species of butterfly high summer is their flight season when they need to find a mate and lay eggs

One of the rarest species of butterfly in the UK has been spotted at a new location in Exmoor 🦋

Heath Fritillary butterflies have been seen on Exmoor National Park Authority (ENPA) land at Ashton Cleave about 8km west of Hawkcombe Woods.
We've been engaged in a long-term project to restore oak coppice in Hawkcombe Wood National Nature Reserve near Porlock to help the recovery of this nationally rare butterfly also traditionally known as the “woodmans follower" because of its habit of occupying recently coppiced areas. It has been breeding successfully in Hawkcombe for a few years.

Exmoor, adapted from The Story " Britains Most Underrated National park with Scenery As Beautiful as The Lake District" By Lucia Botfield

Exmoor is one of the few pockets in Britain that doesn't suffer from light pollution so on a clear night, the sky is lit up with thousands of stars.

Famous for wild ponies recorded in Exmoor since 1086. Ponies were stolen in WW2 for the horsemeat market during rationing & used by British soldiers as target practice. Exmoor being a training ground!

Also home to Britains' largest mammal, the red deer, which have roamed freely for centuries, as well as communities of otters and dormice.

For birdwatchers , bright blue kingfishers, buzzards and falcons.

exmoor boasts moorlands, secret wooded valleys, crystal clear rivers, coastal walks, little seaside villages as well as chocolate villages nestled in the valleys.

A beautiful town, surrounded by dramatic cliffs to visit is Ilfracombe. Quaint features, fun activities, a theatre, museum, award winning aquarium, secret beaches only accessible by tunnels dug by Welsh miners in the 19th century & of course Damien Hirsts famous statue "Verity"

It is the time of year on the farm for adult sheep to be shorn of their woolly fleece to keep the flock healthy & cool in the warmer months, so it's been a busy couple of weeks.
Here at Triscombe, we take out fleeces to The Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall to be made into knitting wool. We save the waste to be used in gardens and on allotments because it is not only a good fertiliser & helps to retain moisture around the plant roots, but also lines hanging baskets and is a pest deterrent for slugs & snails.

Due to the current economic climate, we do have a few remaining vacancies in our holiday cottages within Exmoor National Park and are therefore offering the following special offer for July 2024:

£200 discount for a 7 night stay on any remaining sleeps 2/3/ or 4 person cottages throughout July. Discount code Julyoffer24.

Usual Ts & Cs of booking apply.

The Yarn Market in Dunster has been standing for over 400 years and is still going strong! This interesting picture was taken over 100 years ago - the main difference between then and now is the mode of transport, but everything else is pretty much unchanged 🏰

Built in 1609, Dunster Yarn Market in Somerset is a timber-framed octagonal market hall still standing today, a monument to Dunster's past as the centre of the wool trade.

This photograph was taken between 1850 and 1900.

Tarr Steps has been put back together and has now re-opened after flooding in January moved some of the stones away from their position. Tarr Steps spans the River Barle and is a Grade 1 'clapper bridge', made up of slabs of gritstone arranged over stacks of stones without using mortar or cement. There is perfect weather this week for May Half Term to explore Tarr Steps and the surrounding area ☀️
