The autumn leaves falling on a winters day in the Wye Valley. We love this 'action shot' from just above Bigsweir Bridge, a beautiful part of the valley between Tintern & Monmouth where the road crosses from England to Wales.

Thanks to for the photo.

Full moon over the Prince of Wales Bridge (Second Severn Crossing). A beautiful photo by .

The two Severn Bridges are the gateway to both Monmouthshire and Wales for many people, with around 80,000 vehicles using them each day. Welsh residents know the particular thrill of 'coming home' as they cross.

Best of all, the bridges have been toll free since 2018! If you want to see more great Severn Bridge photography, have a look at our toll-free page :

The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal was historically an important part of the industrial landscape of Monmouthshire & the Blaenavon World Heritage Site. As such, much of the canal can actually be found relatively high up the slopes of the Brecon Beacons, winding its way around the side of mountains.

You can see that here, with the canalside high above the morning mist of the Usk Valley (with Abergavenny hidden to the right of this photo). It means that walking, cycling or boating along the canal offers some great views, especially this time of year.

Tintern Abbey 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

A national icon, Tintern Abbey still stands roofless on the banks of the River Wye after being founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks.

The chants of countless monks echo through the masonry here. Despite the shell of this grand structure being open to the skies, it remains the best preserved medieval abbey in Wales.

Skirrid Fawr 🌄

The name ‘Skirrid’ is derived from the Welsh ‘Ysgyryd’, which means to shake or tremble. It’s easy to see where the name came from, with the massive landslide in the hill’s northern tip.

The Skirrid’s isolation means glorious views in every direction: Herefordshire and Malverns to the north, The Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons to the west, Usk Valley and Somerset to the south and Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean to the east.

They say that on a clear day from The Kymin (above Monmouth) you can see as far as Pen Y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Now is certainly a good time to test that as the skies as have been beautifully clear!

Thanks to for this photo taken earlier in the week.

Not a bad place to sit and see the views here for Helen Water (). She's looking out from the top of the Skirrid, over the valley towards the Sugarloaf. It's hard to decide which of the Brecon Beacons to go up sometimes if you want the best view of the next peak!

As the easternmost of the Brecon Beacons, the Skirrid Fawr offers fantastic views both westwards towards the rest of the National Park, and eastwards over Monmouthshire.

It's a bit chilly out there at the moment, so warm yourself up by remembering slightly warmer times in Monmouthshire. This photo of a peaceful Wye Valley at Bigsweir Bridge was taken by last summer.

It's a gorgeous photo, and we look forward to being able to walk alongside the River Wye in our t-shirts again!

A full and wintery Wye as it snakes through the valley towards the Severn at Chepstow. Wales on the right, England on the left ❤

Although winter is the season we all stay indoors the most, it's so important to keep that connection with nature and get outside whenever you can. Particularly exhilarating in the cold too!

This will be the 821st New Year (approximately) that the stones of Grosmont Castle have seen since being built around 1201 (although the site has been fortified since just after 1066). Built to protect the Marches, it's been historically grouped with Skenfrith & White Castle to form the 'Three Castles'.

Thanks to on Instagram for this photo of the castle with the village of Grosmont behind. It's a great place to visit in the Monnow Valley, right on the England / Wales border.

As the sun sets on 2021 we look forward to 2022, and hopefully a brighter year ahead! We know it's been another very tough year for both our businesses & our visitors, so a huge thank you to both everyone that has visited Monmouthshire this year, and the businesses that have made it a great place to visit.

Thanks to for this early morning photo of the Monnow Valley near the village of Maypole.

Happy New Year everyone.

Wow, what a great shot of the cliffs of the lower Wye Valley at Wintour's Leap looking south east over towards the Severn. Most of this shot is Gloucestershire, except that little spit of land in the river on the right, which is Monmouthshire.

The church at the very bottom of the image is St. James' Church on the Lancaut Peninsula, which can be reached on a walk that starts in Chepstow. See our 'short walks' page for more!

Thanks to .jankowski.houk on Instagram for the photo.
