Ernie's next expedition was to the Quarry park in Shrewsbury. We went at the very beginning of August, just a week or two before what should have been the wonderful Shrewsbury flower show! This is the time of year the Quarry is really at it's best, but it's a truly lovely park to visit any time of year.
We had a picnic on the grass , before looking around the beautiful gardens.
We then took Ernie to the splash park which he loved.
All of the above...TOTALLY free! And a great day out for all ages.
Shrewsbury is a must visit from Broughton Stables, theres many beautiful old buildings and lots of different shops and places to eat. It's only 45 minutes drive.

Our first summer trip was a day out to Borth , our nearest beach. We had some glorious sunshine, and also some true British summertime weather, but a great day regardless!
First we played on the sands and had a paddle. Next, we walked through the town to get some chips from The Acorn fish and chip shop - the best chips in Borth!! The town is a beautiful walk too, with lots of pretty seaside houses and some quirky shops. We had a play on the rocks and watched the waves, before walking back up to The Sands coffee shop for a 99 ice cream. Finally, we took a walk up to the monument for the beautiful views of Borth.
Borth is only a 1hr 20 min drive from Broughton Stables, and a truly beautiful drive too!
Or , you can catch the train from nearby town Newtown, which is only a 25 minute drive away.

As the summer comes to an end, so do our Ernies expeditions posts (for now!). We hope you have enjoyed our tours of our beautiful local area of Shropshire and Montgomeryshire!
Our last stop is a special one, as from the top of Corndon Hill you can see many of the places we have taken you this month! Including the Longmynd, Mitchell's fold, the Mainstone parish, the Stiperstones and Devils chair, and even the Brecon Beacons on the distance!
Corndon hill summit stands at 1685 feet, and gives a spectacular, all round panoramic view (so much so we had to take a video to show all of its views off!)
By road, it's only 8 miles and an 18 minute drive from Broughton Stables. And incredibly you can see Broughton Stables from the top of the hill (i have circled it!)
Ernie will be back to see you soon with some Winter expeditions!

Almost at the end of Ernies expeditions for now! Last week soaking up the last of the summer sun, we visited the beautiful Mainstone church, and walked part of the Offas D**e trail behind it, and took a drive to see some more parts of it (take a look at the second to last picture, it's one of the most impressive parts of the 177 mile Dkye that spans the Welsh border to see, and one of the hardest parts to walk!)
Mainstone is a combination of two words... 'Maen' (Welsh for stone) and 'Stone' , English of the same meaning.
The Church is beautiful, and nestled away so privately and quietly has a magical feel to it. The font is believed to be of the 12th centuary, and the alter from 1673 !
The Church is also home to 3 different species of bats, who live in the roof!
There is also a couple of resident Geese who live amongst the grounds!
A lovely place for a short afternoon drive out, less than 10 minutes drive from Broughton Stables

Ernie scales the Long Mynd!
One of South Shropshires most beautiful places, both veiwing it from below (as you can from your bedroom window at Broughton Stables) or being right on top of it, which is just what we did recently! Taking a picnic to admire the stunning views (including one cheeky sheep).
So called as it is really quite long! At 7 miles long, and 3 miles wide, it covers a vast and beautiful area with many hidden gems within it, including Carding Mill valley, a beautiful reservoir perfect for wild swimming, and Church Stretton ; a chocolate box town full of cafes, antiques, quirky shops, and great fish + chips!
It's great for a walk over from one end to the other, but only if you're feeling fit as its highest point is at 1700 ft!
Alternatively, a single lane road with many pull ins runs right across the length of the Mynd, great for a 'Sunday drive' .
There are multiple small car parks just off the road and then many different paths to choose from to go for a short stroll!
We chose one that goes downhill to overlook the resevoir, as you can see in one of the pics.

Another Ernie's expedition takes us to the beautiful Stiperstones and 'The Devils Chair'. Just 10 miles from Broughton Stables, a 20 minute drive (or a 1hr 15 min bike ride - but be warned it's a steep one!!!) on winding lanes through beautiful scenery.
When you arrive at the carpark, theres just a short walk up to the top of the hill on an easy grass path, with breathtaking views of all the local hills and towns nestled below. You can continue over the rocky ridge up to the devils chair, but for this be sure to bring sturdy boots!
Its thought the rocks that form the ridge formed 480 million years ago!!
Such a stunning but spooky place couldn't be without ledgend of course...
As its told, the rocks of the Devil's Chair were brought there by the Devil himself. He was carrying a load of stones in his apron (I'd never heard of the devil wearing an apron til researching this ledgend!) and apparently travelling across Britain from Ireland, when he fancied a bit of a rest. The Devil was planning to use his load of stones to fill in the valley on the other side of the Stiperstones, but as he got up after taking a rest on the highest rock of the Stiperstones, his apron strings snapped and the rocks tumbled out, and he left them in a pile all over the ridge.
Another Myth is that it's where the witches of Shropshire all meet with the Devil himself!
Definitely a trip to keep for daylight hours! 🀣

Today's Ernies expedition is a bit further afield from Broughton Stables at approx an hour and a half away, but absolutely well worth the drive (a very scenic route).
'Alpaca my boots' (what a name 🀣!) Is as fun as it sounds...Alpaca walking! What's more, its located in the stunning Brecon beacons, arguably one of the most stunning parts of Wales. Brecon is a beautiful town with plenty to see and do, and many breathtaking trails up the beacons, plenty of activities for a day out.
There are 34 alpacas in total. The one that Jessie and Ernie are walking is called Sooty! πŸ¦™β€
They provide 90 minute experiences every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and guests have a chance to feed the alpacas at the end of each trek! This part is great fun for children (of all ages!)
Babies and toddlers in carriers come for free but push chairs are not permitted.
Bookings are by by appointment only and you can do this via the website; alpacamyboots.com. Also, give them a like on Facebook; 'Alpaca my Boots'

This evening's Ernie's expedition takes us to Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle, just 8 miles (18 min drive, 50 min bile ride - bit of a hilly one!) from Broughton Stables.
Mitchell's fold boasts absolutely stunning views of the Shropshire hills and beyond, and is right next door to Corndon Hill if you fancy a good hill stomp (visible in background of picture of Grandma Kate with Ernie).
It is a bronze Age stone circle set in picturesque moorland on Stapeley Hill. It once consisted of about 30 stones, 15 of which are still visible today.
Legend has it.....that during a time of famine, a fairy gave local folk a magic cow that provided an endless milk. One night an evil witch milked her into a sieve. When the cow realised the trick, she disappeared never to be seen again. The witch was turned to stone and a circle of stones was built around her, to stop her from ever escaping.
Love a bit of folklore or think its poppycock, Mitchell's fold is a stunning place to visit!

Good evening , hope you all had a wonderful bank holiday, the weather has been glorious! 🌞
This month we thought we would share with you some of the beautiful places we have visited during lockdown with the youngest member of the team, 'Ernie's expeditions' !
They are all very local to, or a short trip from Broughton Stables - and all perfect socially distanced activities.
First of all is Montgomery Castle - just 7 miles and a 15 minute drive (or approx 40 min bike ride) from Broughton stables.
The Castle commenced around 1223. It has stunning, panoramic views of the Welsh borders.
Montgomery also has some great, quirky shops (check out local gem the alladins cave that is 'Bunners') and cosy cafes.

The three musketeers!

Here are three of the 4-legged friends you can see (and meet!) at Broughton stables. These gorgeous and striking looking sheep are called Zwartbles, and originate from the Friesland region in Holland.

But these three are very at home on the Shropshire/Powys border!
