Mauritania
We pass into the Sahara Desert and follow the Atlantic Coast
It is never forgotten. Visit oases with cool water surrounded by palms, stretches of sand as big as a small country, old forts, camel trains following centuries old trading routes, and a night sky undiluted by city lights. We go hundreds of miles off road, sometimes digging the truck out of the soft sands to get through.

The important bit
Our African expeditions to Cairo are different from our other expedition to Cairo and other holidays you may have taken – we go through areas where no tourists go, the roads can be bad, food can be limited to what we have stocked on the truck, campsites are few and basic, visas can be hard to get and communication to the outside world limited or unavailable at times. On this expedition from London to Cairo we guarantee; we’ll break down, that we will have to wait some where we don’t really want to be for visas spare parts or just for someone to open a closed road and we’ll have to dig the truck out of mud and sand. The trip might overrun so finish late; the route can change due to rains, closed roads visa issues, breakdowns and politics. It’s best not to book your return flights home until you finish the trip

To join this African expedition from London to Cairo you need to be prepared to work as part of a team and to share with the others on the trip. Some of the things you’ll never forget are the satisfaction of getting a 16 ton truck unstuck, cooking over open fires after collecting the firewood, pitching a tent and getting it right even when it rains, going to sleep when its dark and waking at dawn and wanting to get out of your sleeping bag to start another day in which you have no idea of what will happen, washing in rivers, not washing and not caring that your dirty, living outside for months, seeing more than you have ever before, trying to learn French, Arabic or Swahili and having people understand what you say, finding out just how far places are away from where you started and how different places can be and how unaffected out of the way places are from the world we normally live in. Most people who do a London to Cairo expedition find it a lot of fun, though of course hard at times.

The Expedition Vehicles – Safari Truck
Safari Truck – Great for getting to those out of the way places
An overland safari should be on everyone’s list. It’s the best ways to see Africa. Many people return for a second trip. Rugged, off the road, safari trucks to cross deserts and get off the beaten track.

Leaving Nairobi we stop at the Rift Valley scenic lookout its 8,000 feet high and overlooks Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha. We camp beside the lake. Close by is Hell’s Gate National Park where you can hire bikes to take you around the park and see the herds of zebra, buffalo and antelope. You can also wander in the predator free reserve amongst African game. There is spectacular scenery here; red cliffs, grassy plains and rock towers made of hardened lava and the remains of ancient volcanoes.

By the lake is Elsamere; home of Joy Adamson and Elsa the lion of ‘Born Free’ fame. Elsamere is now the centre of the Born Free Foundation and you can find out more about their work and take afternoon tea in the gardens. Lake Naivasha, camping under the fever trees on the shore of Lake Naivasha, with hippos grazing on the shore in the evening

In the Democratic Republic Congo runs the Congo - once the Zaire River. It's the 3rd largest river in the word after the Amazon and the Nile, gathering water from ten countries. From it's capital city Kinshasa runs a fleet of ferry boats lashed together that travel for two weeks upriver through the jungle right across the country and over halfway to East Africa. The ferry carrying produce and people - trading with dugout canoes which paddle out of the forested shores to trade what they have from the jungle with what the ferry brings from the factories and the city.

Arusha, Tanzania – Mesarani Snake Park 25 km east of Arusha town
Started by Ma and BJ who came up from South Africa, so long ago they are now Tanzanian. It’s the best base for the side trip to Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. A thatched dirt floor open sided bar room – best hamburgers and great BBQ dinners cooked on open fires. With a wildlife park for rescued snaked and birds. They run a free medical clinic and educational centre for local people, and there is a Masai Cultural Museum where you the visitor can learn about Masai life from the Masai then visit a Masai village, getting there by camel.
A lot more than a campsite one of the most popular on route.

A SNAP TAKEN BEFORE THEY BUILT THE ROADS

Driving through bamboo forest tunnels we make our way back to the coast reaching Pointe-Noire. Here you can visit the Jane Goodall Chimp sanctuary, or relax on the beach

An old snap before they built the bridges Angola
One of the largest and least visited countries in Africa
The people are friendly and the views astounding. Driving along the red mud roads we reach the coast and the capital Luanda, it’s very Portuguese in its buildings and Brazilian in its beach attire with a line of beach bars and restaurants in the bay. We follow the coast passing lots of waterfalls on the way to Lubango town 2000 meters high on a plateau. It is home to the third of the great statues of Jesus

Most nights are spent at campsites
Lighting the fire, opening up the kitchen. Appreciate – your freshly cooked dinner put together from the stores on board with ingredients purchased in a local market. You will very likely sit around chatting, update your diary – there are lights in the truck to allow writing and reading – or studying the stunning night sky
