Well it's all exercise!
Grunta Beach, Mortehoe
Grunta Beach, Mortehoe in November. One of our special local beaches @staymortehoe. Only a few minutes walk and fabulous at any time of year.
Grunta Pool, Mortehoe
Grunta Pool at Grunta Beach, Mortehoe. Dogs welcome all year. You can also walk round to here from Combesgate Beach at low tide
Barrel jellyfish
Barrel jellyfish swarm in warmer coastal waters in late Spring and often wash up on our beaches at this time of year, sometimes in their hundreds. They can grow to the size of dustbin lids. They are attracted inshore by plankton blooms which provide a plentiful supply of food. They have 8 arms, each frilly in appearance. These frills actually contain their small stinging tentacles which surround hundreds of little mouths! The sting of the barrel jellyfish is not normally harmful to humans, though if you find one on the beach it's best not to handle it as they can still sting when dead.
Woolacombe outfall pipeline
Woolacombe’s outfall pipeline is a lovely easy walk out to the edge of the rocks but can be a very dramatic place when the sea is up. It’s covered in small mussels - they must know that no-one’s going to harvest them from off this pipeline!
Water Shrew on Grunta Beach, Mortehoe
This is a rare sighting of a Water Shrew spotted on Grunta Beach, Mortehoe as they inhabit freshwater environments as a rule.
The Water Shrew is quite unusual among mammals because it has a poisonous bite. The venom in its saliva is strong enough to immobilise frogs and small fish. It can tackle prey up to 60 times heavier than itself, including newts, frogs, crustaceans and snails. Its bite can even give a human a nasty rash, so beware!
