🚨🏰 Which castle protected the Honours of Scotland from Oliver Cromwell's forces? 🏰🚨

Test your knowledge of Scottish history and have your answer ready before you read on.

Perched on a dramatic cliff overlooking the North Sea, Dunnottar Castle played a pivotal role in Scottish history. In 1651, as Oliver Cromwell’s forces advanced, the Honours of Scotland (Crown Jewels) were secretly smuggled out of the castle to prevent their capture.

Facing capture, the defenders devised a daring plan. The minister’s wife, Christian Fletcher, hid the jewels in sacks of wool and secretly smuggled them out, passing them to a church in Kinneff, where they were buried under the floor for safekeeping.

Thanks to her courage, Scotland’s treasures were saved!

📜✨ On 31st October 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie led his Jacobite army out of Edinburgh, embarking on a daring march south towards England.

Fueled by loyalty to the Stuart cause and the hope of reclaiming the British throne, this pivotal moment marked the Jacobites' bold advance during the '45 Rising. Imagine the sight of Highlanders in full battle attire, bagpipes echoing as they marched from the heart of Scotland, fueled by passion and defiance. 🔥🏴

Today, we look back on this historic journey with awe.

SAVE this post for later to refer back to it when you’re ready!

Planning your dream holiday to Scotland can be exciting, even if you haven’t traveled in a while. Here are my six essential tips to help you create a memorable experience:

✨ 1. Decide on Your Focus: Nature, Culture, or History?

Scotland is rich in stunning landscapes, cultural heritage, and history. Think about what excites you most. Narrowing down your interests will help shape your itinerary.

✨ 2. Consider Time of Year and Weather

Scotland’s weather can be unpredictable, so plan around the seasons. If you love milder weather, consider visiting from May to September. Keep in mind, though, that summer is peak tourist season, and places can be busy. Spring and autumn offer fewer crowds and spectacular scenery, with blooming flowers or autumnal colors. Be sure to pack layers and waterproof clothing no matter when you visit!

✨ 3. Plan Your Route: Self-drive, Public Transport, or Group Tour

Decide how you want to get around. A self-drive trip allows for more flexibility to explore hidden gems at your own pace. However, if you’re unfamiliar with driving in the UK or would prefer someone else to handle logistics, there are excellent group tours and public transport options available.

✨ 4. Immerse in Local Culture

Don’t miss out on authentic Scottish experiences like visiting traditional craft markets, distilleries, and local events. Research local festivals or consider staying in smaller villages or with local hosts for a deeper cultural connection.

✨ 5. Plan Accommodation Early

Scotland has a range of accommodations available. If you’re traveling during peak season, book early, especially if you want a particular type of lodging in popular destinations.

✨ 6. Create a Flexible Itinerary

While planning is key, allow some flexibility in your schedule. Leave time for spontaneous detours or unexpected discoveries. Some of the best experiences can happen when you slow down, chat with locals, or follow an off-the-beaten-path recommendation.

I hope this helps to get you started.

Please remember, don’t feel overwhelmed—I am here to guide you when or if you need me. 💜

“I am delighted to let you know that you have reached the next milestone of 25 years of continuous membership with the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).”

I read the email twice. 👀

Had it really been that long since I became a member?

Wow, ….. I was stunned and at the same time delighted to have been recognised for this “silver anniversary”.

It got me thinking how easily it is to lose track of time and focus on something special. Had I not received the email from the Membership Manager this week, I wouldn’t have recognised my achievement.

So, here is my question to you …..

Have you lost track of time and focus on that dream to visit Scotland one day?

Be honest!

When did you really actively think about it last?

Which excuses have you come up with to date to postpone your dream holiday of exploring Scotland?

↪ When the kids are older…

↪ When the time is right….

↪ When you found someone, who would come along with you and shared your interests ….

I’m sure the list is long and you have come up with some really good excuses over time. And they were really valid then! I get it.

But time has moved on and you have found me now. 😃

I can help you to pick up where you left off no matter how long ago that was (and it doesn’t need to be 25 years ago).

I can guide you through the first steps of your planning stage, work out an itinerary with or for you, and meet you in Scotland for part or all of your itinerary as your very own personal local guide.

Sounds good? Then let’s get together.

Like and comment on this post with the word TIME and I’ll get in touch with you with further details how you can work with me. 💜

I can’t wait to see where your Scotland dream will take you.

🚨📚 Who is the author of the REBUS novels? 📚🚨

This would be a typical question during a trivia night in any Scottish pub. Do you know the answer? Read on to see if you're right...

Dive into the gritty streets of Edinburgh with Detective John Rebus! 🕵️‍♂️ From dark alleyways to political intrigue, Rebus unravels some of the city's most twisted crimes.

Author Ian Rankin began the series in 1987, inspired by his love for crime fiction and Scotland’s rich history. Born in Fife, Rankin was studying in Edinburgh when he decided to set his novels there, using the city's contrasting beauty and shadows as a character itself.

He couldn't have picked a better city with its historic streets, mysterious closes, and duality between elegance and danger. Wouldn't you agree?

Have you read a Rebus 🕵️‍♂️ book?
Are you a fan and own them all?

💙🤍 Dreaming of Scotland? 💙🤍

I get you. 😊

It certainly is a wonderful place!

I meet so many people each year that tell me how much they love Scotland.

Most of them are here for the very first time, others came many years before and returned this year to replenish their souls with a little more of Scottish magic. ✨

Each one of them has their own story about Scotland and memories to retrace.

If your dreaming of Scotland for a while now, but hesitate because you're thinking that:

👀 the weather is so unpredictable,

👀 you're not sure what is the best time to travel,

👀where to go, what to see.

IT'S ALL A TAT TOO OVERWHELMING FOR YOU.

Don't worry, I am here to help you. 💜

I can help you plan your dream trip to Scotland for 2025.

Together we will figure out the best route for you, how best to reach all the places on your wish list, where to stay and what not to miss.

This is how memories are made! Supported all the way 🙂

It suddenly hit me: THIS was what I was meant to be doing!

I could hardly contain my excitement. I had a big smile on my face and you would have never seen anyone more delighted as I was looking around the room, scissors at the ready.

All around me there was:
😃 laughter

🗣️ Engaged conversations

✄ busy hands cutting fusible web appliqué shapes in preparation of what was to come

👩🏼‍🏫 and the friendly workshop teacher making her round from table to table to ensure everyone knew what they were doing.

You could just feel the happiness and creative energy in the room. Throughout the duration of the workshop all of us grabbed the opportunity to nurture our creative side.

Not only did we connect with each other, but we also connected with a slower, more deliberate way of life.

Such an antidote to this fast-paced world we live in!

If you had stepped into the room from the outside, observing us just for a moment, you’d not believe that we only just met a few days ago. There was already a flair of familiarity and camaraderie among us, which only grew stronger as the days passed.

So here is the thing ….

From the moment I began guiding visitors in Scotland, I searched for ways to offer a richer, more authentic travel experience.

Something, that would turn travel experiences into a more memorable and meaningful one all round.

Something, that would offer a proper break from daily grind and provide a platform to understand local culture on a deeper level.

That search had ended that very moment! 🥳

Are YOU looking for more than just a casual escape and are in the process of planning your 2025 vacation to Scotland?

Working on special projects gets my juices flowing. 🍊🧡

Especially when I know they are perfect for you and that you will get so much out of it. 🙌🏻

Prior to me setting up my own business, I worked very much ‘behind the scenes’ as the International Sales Manager of an Earthenware Pottery Company AND was the Personal Assistant to the CEO, looking after all the daily admin and sales stuff, organising international multi-stop trip schedules for everyone (including myself) as well as planning out and attending international exhibition and trade show events, making sure that everything ran smoothly and everyone was well looked after. I loved doing it, especially since my boss was leaving me to it. 😍

His words were:

“YOU KNOW WHAT I WANT, NOW GO AND GET IT DONE.”

I never thought I would one day step up in front of a group of people, speak publicly, be interviewed on a podcast and video blog or run my own business successfully single handedly. 😃

The current project I am working on will get you excited as well, I just know it. It is part of a series of similar projects I am planning to role out for 2025.

I got the idea for it all last year while guiding & touring Scotland with a group of ladies from the USA and Canada and I knew then that I had found my niche.

Can you guess from the clues 🕵️‍♀️ what it might be? 💡

Interested?

Then simply contact me via DM with your name and email ID and I add you to the waiting list.

I’m so excited to get this started. See you there! 💜

💜 Slow down - stop what you're doing and just breathe! 🤍

We all need a reminder to do this on a regular basis.

Slowing down and allowing your thoughts to drift and your senses to be heightened to hear, feel, smell and see nature all around you is one big benefit of taking time out. It does a lot for your physical and mental wellbeing. It refreshes your mind and restores your energy.

Here in Scotland we are surrounded by beautiful landscapes, lochs and glens which provide plenty of opportunities to just do that.

These thoughts all sprung to mind this morning when I turned the calendar over to October 10th. Today would have been the birthday of a boy I liked quite a lot many years back in middle school.

Would have been - yes, because he sadly took his own life more than 40 years ago. The whole school was in shock when the news broke and I was so saddened by it.

Life is so fragile and the stresses of life affect us all differently.

Therefore, be mindful of each other, make time to talk and if nothing else - SLOW DOWN for a little while, find a nice spot outside and just be.

Sending virtual hugs today to those who need them. 🤗 🤍

What's your secret weapon to switch off?

Mine is crafting 🧶. The best way to empty my brain and let my mind drift is when I am sitting all snuggled up over a crochet or knitting project. At the moment I am crocheting a scarf for my mother-in-law in India.

Fact is, once I sit down on my computer to work on new content or new offers for my business (I love working on craft retreats in particular), time just runs away with me.

Sometimes, I wonder why I feel dizzy all of a sudden and then I realise that I have not stopped for hours and even missed lunch time. 😱

I get really invested and excited with my work. Can you relate?

Yet, this cycle needs interrupted.

But how?

💜 setting an alarm and really stopping what you’re doing for at least 30 mins

💜 go for a walk (even if it’s just around your garden) or play with your pet (my cats love it)

💜 take 30 mins to work on your current craft project or research your next craft retreat in Scotland 😉

It’s on Thursday and while I talked with friends recently what they are doing to take a break, it was a great reminder for me to take stock and identify those areas where I can increase more fun activities.

Life should be filled with fun things to do. If the sun is out - go and enjoy it! ☀️

The to-do-list can wait a while, it will still be there for you.

Make sure to look after yourself and put a little more fun and laughter into your life. You’ll find that your work will flow smoother afterwards! 🌻

On Tuesday was International Coffee Day!! ☕☕☕

How did I miss this??? 🤨

I love a good cup of coffee to stop the time for a moment and indulge into a little ME time!

I usually keep it simple to a regular sized coffee latte or cappuccino.

I am not into all those different syrupy styles and sweet concoctions, milks and blends.

They are a minefield and can get so confusing at times.

Bit like exploring Glasgow or Edinburgh on your own without a guide, right? 😁

Lots of complicated and confusing options to do something very simple:

- find the best walking route around the city and understand what you’re actually looking at;

- capturing sites that are important to you AND have time to sit down somewhere nice to take it all in

What if you could wipe out all those confusing options and gain back valuable time as well as receive expert knowledge with one simple decision?

Book a professional tourist guide

By investing in the services of a well trained and knowledgeable local guide for a few hours you can be assured that you not only discover some well hidden places of the city, but you also learn about city life from past to present days.
.. you’ll be surprised about what you can discover. And if you inform your guide beforehand of any special interests or topics, the tour will be tailored to your needs.

Want to know how?

Contact me via DM to let me know when you are arriving in Glasgow or Edinburgh and what your requirements are and I will send you the details for a half or full day walking tour with me as your personal guide.

Wether it is sometime over the remainder of 2024 or during the 2025 season, get in touch now – and then go enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

How do you take yours? ☕

Planning is key when it comes to a successful holiday itinerary.

Of course you cannot plan for every eventuality, but the essentials need to be taken care off.

These 5 tips set you up for a good start.

It will help if you check with your family members what they are looking to get out of the holiday so that you can keep their interest in mind too when planning locations and places to visit.

And remember, if planning is not really your thing then you can always reach out to me.

Over the winter months (Nov-Apr) I offer an itinerary planning service for your next Scotland trip.

It’s not always easy to organise a successful vacation (wether you travel on your own or with someone else).

The itinerary for our recent Italy trip was researched and planned for months. Including things to do that ticked each family member’s boxes.

Yet, one of the family highlights of the week - a visit to Pompeii almost didn’t happen.

It looked easy enough to do 👀….

…. and it started off well, but soon we found ourselves queued in a huge line up at Salerno Station to purchase train tickets from Salerno to Pompeii.

Despite allowing more than 30 mins (usually plenty of time) for this task, we missed the train. 😱

Why? - By the time it was our turn, time had moved on too close to train departure time and the system prevented us from making the purchase.

GREAT 😤

We ended up taking the next train which departed an hour later and got to Pompeii after all. Sorted.

Yes, but the experience cost us 60 mins of precious time and a certain level of stress for sure.

It taught me a valuable lesson though:

No matter where you go in the world,

even if it is close to home 🏡,

every place has its own rules and ways of doing things that can catch you off guard!

So be prepared for that, keep your cool and make the best of it.

Tomorrow I’ll tell you how 😊

👉🏻 2017:

* In the summer of 2017 I was sitting at my desk at work when the doors swung open and our department head walked in on a surprise visit from Germany. Instantly I knew this was not good news.

* Just a few hours later it was official - the entire inside sales department was closing down forever in three months time and we were to negotiate our redundancy packages.

* I knew immediately what I wanted to do: set up my own business and work for myself. How I was going to do that, I still had to figure out.

* All I wanted to do was to build something sustainable and yet scalable, that would make a difference and deliver support to others, while providing financial support to my family.

* A chance meeting with a friend put me on the right path and I applied for a training place with the Scottish Tourist Guide Association to become a Blue Badge Tourist Guide throughout Scotland.

* While I waited to find out if my application to get into the 2-years training course with the STGA was successful, I completed guide training with the cruise ship industry for a leading Shore-Ex company and began guiding in May 2018.

* Devine Tours of Scotland was born.

👉🏻 2024:

* I got into the STGA training course and graduated with my Blue Badge certification in March 2020.

* I navigated my business through a global pandemic, managing to skill up, create social media handles and my website and grow organically into the roles of business owner and CEO.

* I never worked harder but I’m continuing to build the business of my dreams.

* I help hundreds of people each holiday season to explore Scotland, experience the local customs and heritage and make lasting memories..

* My office desk is my dining room table, but my actual office is the beautiful scenery of the whole of Scotland.

* I’ve been interviewed on podcasts, drilling further down into my niche offers, been a special guest at one of my clients anniversary celebrations in Austria and managed to fit in 3 long haul travel trips so far.

💜

I often think back to that summer day in 2017 when life as I knew it changed forever.

What decision have you made that changed the path of your life? ✨✨✨

Today I practiced what I always recommend to my guests - to make sure to include local experiences into their travel itinerary and explore the ways the locals do things.

Today I visited the vineyard Tenuta San Francesco in Tramonti, Italy 🇮🇹

It was an incredible experience to learn all about the ancient vines (some more than 500 years old), as well as the families passion to keep the old traditions alive.

These grapes were sweet and delicious and ready for harvest.

The wine from this ancient vine is called È ISS which means “this is it”.

Perfect with the meal that was served after the tour.

A memory I will cherish for a long time.

So, what will be one experience that you have to do next time you’re away on holiday?

This is my book stash beside my bed that I currently read in turns. They are all different yet form a puzzle piece in the greater picture of things.

Whenever I get a moment I take a few page of a chapter and read on.

Is this something you do too? Do you have a similar stash of books next to your bed? Do you mind sharing in the comments what they are?

Today, while guiding an English speaking tour, I had the most heartwarming encounter.

A lovely guest was so excited to hear I was from Germany that she asked if she could give me a hug.

As she embraced me, she whispered that she was originally from Berlin.

She shared her incredible story—how she was first sent to America for work, but after not feeling at home, she moved to the UK instead. When she returned to Germany briefly, she realized that England was where she truly belonged. She’s now been living in England for more than 60 years and hasn’t looked back since.

This beautiful moment reminded me of the power of courage and embracing change. Just like this guest who followed her heart and found her true home.

Traveling solo to something like a Scottish Heritage craft retreat for example can lead to unexpected connections. You never know who you’re going to meet and what kind of instant bond you might form!

I will definitely cherish this moment for a long time to come.

If you’re thinking about joining me for a 2025 craft retreat in Scotland as a single traveler—or just want updates about Scotland—DM me with your email address to be added to the waiting list.

Exciting things are ahead, and I’d love to have you on this creative journey!

29/08/2024

When my training started in 2018 to become a tourist guide in Scotland the curriculum was very comprehensive. It was built on three core foundations:

Core Knowledge
Regional Studies
Professional Skills

I remember vividly being shown a slide show of iconic places from all across Scotland. The task was to identify as many as possible. I sat there puzzled because what I could identify was minimal.

Now, almost 7 years on, I can tell you what they are, how to get there and what else you can find along the way.

I grew, changed and moved on as a person and in my business…..

This also applies to my experience and expertise. Whilst during training and final examination I had to know about any aspects of Scottish culture, heritage and regions (and still do), there are certain topics which I absolutely adore and could talk about for hours.

Take Scottish Heritage Crafts for example.

There are so many of them to choose from and most of them are mirrored in other cultures across the world which bridge language barriers and forge connections. An aspect that I love so much.

Other heritage crafts are unique to Scotland which make them special and highly interesting.

Each craft is often tied to regions and historic events, which then carried those skills into different corners of the world.

Its a topic close to my heart and I love to share my knowledge with other creative women who too are intrigued to find out the origins and techniques of Scottish craftsmanships, how they evolved and how they were influenced over time.

Are you that creative woman who is fascinated by what can be learned from heritage crafts, who loves to travel and is interested in small group craft workshops during a bespoke 2025 Scottish Heritage Craft Tour?

If so, then DM me the word CRAFT and I add your name to the waiting list. Once all the details are available you will be the first to know all about it.

28/08/2024

The other day I walked along this street in Glasgow's Merchant City after finishing not one but two great coach tours. The morning one was with a lovely group of Australians who were visiting the UK on a 16 days holiday excursion. The afternoon one was with a group of Germans who had just arrived from Hull and were on a 3 day taster tour of Scotland.

You'll see, the sun was out and the colours in the neighbourhood were stunning. I stopped for a while to take it all in and then it hit me - I took a leap of faith almost seven years ago, when I found myself redundant from my corporate job. The decision to work for myself had been slumbering for some time deep within me and now was the time to act upon it.

So why was I hesitating? Was it because the decision when it came to it was really scary? Most definitely. Yet, I trusted my instincts and took the feelings of fear inside me as excitement of the unknown that lay ahead of me.

A good friend of mine (and later colleague) introduced me to the world of tourist guiding. He encouraged me to take this leap and go for it. I am so glad that I listened and that he was there for me.

Looking back, that decision was such an important one to make. It was a chapter of my life, which set me up for what was to follow.....

If I hadn't decided to give it a go, I'd probably not be here doing what I now do. Not only have I proofed to myself that I had what it takes to run my own business. A business that provides the income and freedom I've always wanted for myself, and a business that doesn't feel like a job to me.

It's really so interesting to look back and to recognise the defining moments and decisions I took along the way. So how can that help you?

If you are a passionate, creative female traveller who would love to explore Scotland but you hold back, because you don't know where to start, how to decide what to do first and when the best time to come would be, then get in touch. Don't let the feeling of not knowing what to do or the resentment of it all being too complicate stop you. I am here to help you. All is possible, just turn fear into excitement.
Can't wait to meet you. ✨
