Welcome to January in Scotland – A Month of Tradition, Celebration, and Creativity!
As we step into the New Year, January in Scotland may be cold, with short days and bracing winds, but it's a month full of tradition, music, and reflection. From vibrant festivals to the heartwarming celebration of our national poet, January has much to offer.
Here are some notable dates to look forward to this month:
🎵 Celtic Connections: Scotland's largest winter music festival kicks off on 18th January in Glasgow, showcasing traditional folk and contemporary music from Scotland and beyond.
✨ Glasgow 850 Opening Night: Mark your calendars for 16th January! Glasgow begins its year-long celebration of 850 years of history with an unforgettable evening of lights, music, and storytelling.
🎉 Burns Night: On 25th January, we honour Robert Burns, Scotland's beloved national poet. Gather with friends and family for traditional suppers of haggis, neeps, and tatties, accompanied by whisky and recitals of Burns' poetry.
Traditionally, January in Scotland was a time for keeping hands busy indoors. Heritage crafts like knitting woollen scarves, weaving tartan patterns, and making beeswax candles were cherished activities, perfect for warding off the winter chill. Embroidery, often used to personalise household items, and basket weaving, using natural materials gathered in earlier months, were also common.
Why not try your hand at one of these crafts to bring a touch of Scotland into your home this winter?
Wishing you a cosy, creative, and joyful start to the year. Stay tuned for more stories, traditions, and inspirations from Scotland!

☃️ A Victorian Winter Tale: ☃️
Today I tell you about the beginnings of the Christmas tree in Scotland, why the celebration of Hogmanay was more important than the Christmas festivities and what the origins of Boxing Day celebrations were all about.
But most of all, this is a gentle reminder that being kind, looking out for one another and cherishing quality time with family and friends is not just for this time of year but rather something that we should gift each other as often as we can.

The Cutty Sark is a legendary British clipper ship celebrated for its speed and remarkable design. Built in 1869 in Dumbarton, Scotland, it was initially designed for the tea trade between China and Britain, racing across the oceans to bring fresh tea back to eager drinkers in London.
She has a sleek, narrow hull and innovative sail arrangement, which made the Cutty Sark one of the fastest ships of her time, setting records and earning her place in maritime history.
Today, she is preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich, London, allowing visitors to explore her decks and relive the golden age of sailing.
Her sister ship, GLENLEE, is berthed on the River Clyde as a museums ship too, being part of the Glasgow Riverside Museum attractions.
