Panning for gold, right here in Scotland!

If you’re looking a bit of outdoor fun, take a drive up to Helmsdale and try your hand at panning for gold!

Pop past the Belgrave Arms Hotel and buy your license (£10 per adult, children under 16 free). You can rent the equipment here too for £10 per set (£15 refundable deposit) or buy for £25.

Bring cash as the hotel is acting on behalf of the Suisgill Estate who own the land.

Then drive to Kildonan Burn (Baile An Or - Town of Gold).

You can stay close to where you park or venture further.

We met someone there who showed us all the gold they’d found over two days! Not a huge amount but shows it’s there to be found.

It’s still up for debate as to what we found 😆, but it’s all pretty and made for an adventurous day out.

If you’re looking for something to eat before or after your expedition, we had a great savoury crepe at Timespan (which is also a museum) and their River Cafe in Helmsdale.

*Be aware, there are a lot of ticks at the moment.

Pssst….. did you know Eden Court Theatre and Cinema in Inverness has a cinema and not only that, some films offer £5 per person family tickets 🤩

Just a 1hr 20min drive away is the beautiful, fairytale, Dunrobin Castle 🏰

The gardens are looking absolutely beautiful just now, especially when the weather is so good.

Just 2.5 miles along the road in Auldearn, you’ll find The 1645 Inn where you can have something to eat and drink while your little ones have a wee play 🙂
