Just checking they all float πŸ˜‚

Very pleased with this first run of handplanes...all crafted from offcuts, and hand shaped from flat pieces.

These are super fun to make, and less of a daunting & time consuming project as a full surfboard.

Yet to actually try one in the surf, but I'm sure these will be the first of many more hand planes βœ‹πŸΌπŸŒŠ

Thanks to the legend for the beautiful pics. We were blessed with a cracker of a sunset!

Couple of these are for sale - check my stories or "for sale" highlights if you are interested πŸ‘€

A wee series of handshaped handplanes almost complete!
Bit of an experiment with various glue up, shaping techniques, and waxoil, but already looking forward to the next batch.

A perfect way to use up off cuts, and they are a quick & easy little project compared to a full board build - so expect more of these for sure πŸ™ŒπŸ»

These are a mix of Paulownia, Cedar, Douglas, Oak, and tropical hardwood offcuts & scraps 🌲🌳

Cheers for the advice on wax oils Jack

What's your favourite?

Couple of these will be for sale, so DM if interested πŸ™‚

Thanks ✌🏼🌊πŸͺ΅

Flying Fish going right in Indo 🐟🌊

HT's served excitement, nerves, and awe – a true test for both my skills and this board! πŸ”₯ Left feeling very humbled.

While I'm not sure this board is quite right for hollow powerful barrels - I'm already looking forward to giving it another crack back home in Scotland this winter!

Disclaimer - unfortunately didn't get a tube after this shot 😒 It was a session full of barrel dodges! πŸ˜‚

This one was a little distraction from the planned demo range, but the size and shape felt perfect for an upcoming trip to Indo, so I decided to get to work and smash out this little number in only a few weeks. The fasted build so far!!

A crossing of paths between and my dad a few weeks back, led to a fun small summer surf session where Eli tried out the 9ft6 log.

This is the first public experience, review, or feedback I have recieved. Really stoked, and thank you so much for the kind words, and photos, Eli! πŸ™πŸΌ Hope you have an unreal venture round Europe in your van!

'"The board you made is incredible! You should be so proud of it, the quality of workmanship is seriously fantastic.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a father who has built boards for the past 40 years, so I know a good board when I see one.

It felt great as soon as I picked it up. The outline, bottom contours, rocker, weight and rails were all in proportion of one another. It paddled great, plenty of speed, it had great glide when trimming and walking up and down the board. It rolled over its rail nice and easy and didn’t catch. Not to mention aesthetically it looked beautiful.

That’s what it felt like under my feet anyway, hopefully that helps legend."

Looking forward to this being the first of many encounters and discussions about wooden boards, with surfers who fancy giving these boards a try!

This felt good! The Flying Fish loves to go fast and feels so solid through turns.

3 weeks of hard work and late nights to get this board done and take it on a journey to Indonesia paid off! I didn't really know what to expect from a wooden shortboard, and have only just scratched the surface of what it's like to surf these properly. But after a few sessions on this board, I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was.

I was sceptical about the extra weight, but it added acceleration through a drop in or after a top turn that I'd never felt before! If you used the height of the wave, this thing flies and you get so much momentum down the line. Through a turn the rail stays deep and is solid, so never once felt the tail wanting to slide out.

It made me surf with some extra confidence for some reason, and felt so satisfying to try properly throw it around.

Still so much to unlock, but I also learned its limits at some heavy Hollow Trees. All in all, it certainly felt like a good start on the wooden shortboard journey!

Hughe thanks to and all the boys for an unreal time in the Ments, to for the hospitality, and for all the beautiful photos! I'm forever grateful πŸ™πŸΌπŸŒŠ

Couple of details and highlights of the log. πŸͺ΅

As if this initial build wasn't taking long enough and was already a huge learning curve, I went all out on this first board with a glass on leash loop and nose/tail blocks.

A good extra challenge, and delighted with how it came out - definitely makes the board that bit extra special and unique!

I was a bit sceptical of the glass on leash loop on quite a big wooden surfboard like this, but so far it has been solid in the surf! 🌊

Full run down of details, dimensions, and wood used on this board coming soon! πŸ‘€

A fun session a few weeks back, and quick practice on the wooden log before the Scottish champs!

Didn't expect much from the forecast, but the waves actually turned on a bit. Pretty fast and hollow for the longboard at times, but a good challenge. There were a fair few nosedives to begin with!

Super cool to meet you and thank you so much for grabbing these shots! πŸ™πŸΌπŸ“Έ

Was also sweet to finally get a surf with Mark! Good to share a fun wee session. Although I could sense your judgement that I am under 50 and on a 9ft6 longboard. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚ To be fair, I probably would have been more comfortable on my shortboard!

Pretty special to make it to the Longboard semi-finals at the Scottish Champs on board number #1!

Cracking weekend of Scottish waves in the sun, finding my feet in competitive surfing, and giving SAP SurfCrafts's first hollow wooden board a proper test. Tricky choppy waves on the first day, followed by tiny micro-waves on the second day gave a challenging mix of conditions!

Heaps to take away and think about in terms of how the board performed. Definitely realise I need to surf it a lot more and improve my longboarding, to really get to know the board and understand potential design changes & improvements.

Loads more info about board #1 coming up in terms of its design, dimensions, wood types, and construction!

Thanks and everyone involved in the event! Hungry for more next year!

Who would like to see a wooden board in the shortboarding next year?

Thanks for all the amazing photos πŸ“Έ
1st: Duncan McLachlan
2nd: Wendy Sutherland
3rd: Malcolm Anderson

Shout to all the other longboarders - great to have a bit of fun! .mcqueenie .02

Here are the vision and goals for SAP SurfCraft over the next year or two!

The vision is simply to develop and showcase bespoke Scottish made wooden surfboards in our amazing local waves, and promote the use of alternative construction methods & materials.

Starting with 6 demo boards seems like the ideal way to learn & refine the construction process, as well as try to spread interest & understanding by letting people try them.

So, these are some initial goals:

▫️ Build 6 demo boards - three identical shapes from two types of wood (Spanish Paulownia vs. Scottish Cedar

▫️Understand the trade off between lighter imported wood compared to slightly heavier local wood

▫️Aim to have at least 1 other board of alternative construction (e.g. recycled foam & h**p) as another comparison / trade-off

▫️Let as many people try them to get feedback on performance, looks, and peoples opinion on wooden surfboards. This will be done through some arranged demo days, and/or hopefully collaborating with surf events around Scotland and the UK

▫️Learn from all this and improve skills & methods as much as possible

After ALL that is done - my hope is that I can deliver more sustainable custom surfboards, at a super high quality, in a construction that people like & want, with the freedom for people to choose where the materials come from and understand the trade-offs involved!

Who wants to try one first!?

SAP SurfCraft is about making unique wooden surfboards crafted in Scotland!

I decided to choose a bit of variety and flexibility around logos, branding, and what SAP means.

"SAP" came naturally and felt like a simple and fitting word that associates surfboard resin to tree sap (actually an active ingredient in surfboard bio-resin).

Secondly, I thought it would be cool if SAP meant something a bit more, and came up with "Scottish Arbor Products". This is a tagline or stamp that will be associated with anything I produce that is Scottish made or uses Scottish materials. It will likely also one day represent things outside of surfboards, as other creative furniture or carpentry projects inevitably crop up.

Let me know what you think of the logos and branding so far?

Thanks for all the kind messages and follows so far,

Caorann ✌🏼
