PENGUINS! 💕 Rockhopper penguins to be precise. The feistiest of all the penguin species! Full of character and as tough as they come, Rockhopper penguins inhabit the Falklands most hostile cliffy environments, and like many penguins, spend all winter at sea, cruising about in the ocean and not coming back to land until breeding time. The Southern Ocean is a BIG place and the Rockhopper penguin is a small penguin: about a foot and a half tall or so! But they fearlessly come and go in all that the ocean throws at them - the only time I've ever seen these birds harmed by the waves throwing them onto the rocks is during a "one in 50 years" storm. Check the last photo for an apparition... A Rockhopper in a foam "costume" 😂 after getting lost during landing and having to swim through a pool of foam created by the waves stirring up chemicals in the kelp! 🐧 🌊💕

PENGUINS! 🐧 🩷 One of the most bizarre birds on our planet, penguins are fascinating. But, the King penguin surely takes the biscuit with being the most bizarre!! Especially the chicks... You can see why early explorers thought this fluffy brown creature was another species and named it the Woolly Penguin! We call them 'Oakham Boys' and when they're strong and healthy they can easily be bigger than the parents, with all the downy feathers making them look more like strange teddy bears than birds!! In honour of yesterday, here are some of my cutest and most bizarre chick pics! 😂😍

ANTARCTICA 🤍 A place of extremes, of extreme beauty, and one that most people assume is pretty much, well, white!! It is! But, it's also full of quite surprising colour 💛 Today we visited Horseshoe Island, beyond the Polar circle. It's one of my favourite spots because of the insanely beautiful Malachite that can be found in the granite rocks there. Just wow!! There were also some sensational colours in this very iron-rich rock along our hike - you can see the oil-like patterns and also some lichens growing on the surface. Adélie penguins must also get a mention as well, of course! 🐧😉 What a first day of expedition and exploration on NG Endurance!

Wishing you all a beautiful New Year! 2024 was such a weird one and I know that is felt by many friends of mine! It wasn't bad, it was just weird! 😆 (Usually I like weird; weird is good! But not '2024-weird'!!) So, here's to more adventures in 2025, discovering new places & capturing more beautiful moments on camera. I have been very quiet on social media these past months... But how to balance being out there exploring and living life, whilst also maintaining enough of a social media presence to let the algorithms even show anyone what you're doing?!!! It's more important to be out there, living and having the experiences, right? 😄 So, I hope you are out there doing the same. Put the phone away and get outside! 🐧🐧🐧✨✨✨✨ HAPPY NEW YEAR ❤️

Beautiful White-tufted Grebes this evening 🧡 It's not often we get such perfect conditions, especially with no wind, so tonight was just ideal for me to transform into a swamp creature and wriggle as close as possible to these shy little birds in their pond! 😄

🌊🩵💙🌊 Ocean Dreaming 🌟 Anyone who knows me knows I love the sea and if I can choose to be anywhere, I'm either on the ocean or at the beach! There's nowhere better. 🌊💙🩵🌊 I'm away from my home in the Falklands right now, which mostly means I'VE GOT INTERNET THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!! 🤣 ("Come to the Falklands and experience communication life like it was in the 1990's!"🤦🏻‍♀️🙄) So, I have been able to go through my photos in the cloud & gather some favourite ocean-y pics to share! All photos are from the Falklands, a couple from St Helena, plus one or two icy Antarctica 🌟

Take a closer look at the inside of an ordinary Mussel shell!! 🖤🖤🖤💙💜💚
The highly iridescent Nacre that you can find inside some shells is the result of the mollusc responding to some foreign body or attack on its little shell home! This one was on Yorke Bay today and had a really black inside with this amazing colour seen with sunlight and a macro lens.

Still one of the most magical photo moments of my life! Peale's dolphins beneath the cliffs, the last light of the evening reflecting off their shiny skin. So absolutely beautiful. They were mating and spent hours chasing each other around.

❄️🔥 Ice & Fire 🔥❄️ Antarctica brings endless spectacles of nature at her finest. It's usually too overwhelming to even capture what your eyes are seeing - and honestly, it's not possible to take the intense emotion of what you see on a daily basis in these wild places and somehow shrink & mould them into single images and split second moments. You really just need to be there! These are just a few snaps taken on my humble phone camera.

Crabeater seals 🤍 Antarctica 🤍 71° degrees South with was the most unforgettable voyage - we did this epic journey at the very end of the summer season, pushing further and further South to the Wilkins Ice Shelf, through some of the most sensational Antarctic scenery and making history for MV Hondius, our beautiful little ship! At that time we were the only ship on earth that far south, which honestly felt pretty special! At this latitude, Crabeater seals definitely rule the ice! The most numerous marine mammal on the planet, "crabbies" are very cute but also well known to be quite gnarly with one another and hence usually have quite some scars. Contrary to their name, they don't eat crabs. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They eat Krill, and have very funky tricuspid teeth that act like sieves, to do it! 🩵
