We are a family run business with almost 70 years of experience. We operate from April to October and our Dreamcatcher boat is also often available to book before 1st of April. We

have purpose-built passenger boats licensed and inspected by the Maritime Coastguard Agency which will take you safely out to sea. Your trip will be entirely within the Cardigan Bay 'Special Area of Conservation' departing from the historic pier at New-Quay. Our company has been a SeaWatch Foundation recommended boat operator in New Quay for over fifteen years. The main attraction is one which we cannot guarantee but that adds to the experience when they appear, we pause at seal haul-out areas and bird colonies where you can see a number of coastal species depending on time of year. Bottlenose dolphins frequent the bay in great numbers between April and October, Wildlife is protected in Cardigan Bay so we aim to give you the best encounters with our wildlife without causing them any disturbance. Our wildlife guides will give you loads of amazing information about dolphins, seals, birds etc. Our boats are available for private charter like birthday, hen party, and also film and media charter available. In 2024 we introduce 'Suncatcher' the first dolphin spotting boat in west Wales with an upper deck, she has unrivalled views plus and indoor area offering hot and cold snacks. Lovely day for wildlife.
We were thrilled to spot newborn calf Summer and mum Tallie on trips today! Both mother and calf seem to be doing very well with Summer being as adorable as ever frolicking around, bringing that beautiful face out the water for us to admire!

A large Bull Grey Seal posed for photos on a large sloped rock at low tide.
Lastly, a surprise visitor to the Bay... A Great Crested Grebe. A very handsome bird indeed and an unusual sight within New Quay Bay.
These are the largest member of the Grebe family and are usually a common sight on freshwater lakes and reservoirs... Not so common on the sea.

Meet Baby Summer, Cardigan Bay's newest, newborn calf who's been keeping us all very entertained by being much more confident than most newborns. As you can see from these clips, Summer's mum isn't afraid to show her baby off to our boats.

MAD ABOUT BABY ANIMALS 😍

Following from our previous post, we have had many more sightings of the newborn baby Dolphin who has made regular appearances with mum in the Bay since it was spotted a few days ago!
Both mum and calf appear to be doing very well and have been present with Ghost's maternity pod!

This little one is a rocket! Full of beans and already proving to be full of Dolphinality 😍
Staying for the most part by mum's side however this little one is very active and very quick keeping mum on her fins for sure 🀣

Photographs taken today from Suncatcher by wildlife guide & photographer Sarah Michelle Wyer who fully admits this little rocket is proving to be a great challenge to photograph! 🀣 She says: 'Breaching Dolphins have been easier to capture on camera than this calf' πŸ’™

We will try our best to continue to post updates on this little one throughout the rest of the season, fingers crossed they keep visiting us in New Quay Bay!

Lastly a photo of the first Seal pup to be born within New Quay Bay!

In order to spot seal pups on trips & photograph them, binoculars or Telephoto lenses are a MUST as we do not approach Seal haul-out areas closer than 100m away for their protection.

That's the Spirit πŸ’œ

Storm Lillian certainly hasn't phased the local maternity pod from gracing us with their presence!
Especially Ghost and Spirit πŸ‘»πŸ˜

Spirit is reaching 3 years old round about this time of year! πŸŽ‰
Spirit was first spotted alongside Ghost as a newborn at the beginning of September 2021. Ghost has done another fantastic job of being a mother and Spirit is still part of the local maternity pod still staying close to mum's side.
Ghost though appeared to be on babysitting duties 🀣 as Spirit was playing around with another calf too by her side for a little while posing for some absolutely adorable photos.
We are so glad to have them back in the Bay!

Despite a big swell with the tail end of the storm, we had two fantastic trips on board Suncatcher. She handled the waves smoothly allowing passengers to have the best views of the Dolphins.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD LITTLE ONE!

We were all over the moon on Suncatcher when wildlife guide Sarah spotted this beautiful baby Dolphin!

This calf is very young. Although it will be very tough to say 'exactly' how old, we can see very prominent foetal folds on its body (folding /stripe marks). Newborn calfes are roughly ~1m in length and this little nugget is very tiny and very floppy πŸ˜‚ being guided to the surface and through the water by mum.

Collaborating sightings with this year's research from Sea Watch Foundation, we can confirm this is the third newborn calf this year that has been spotted in the Cardigan Bay area.
But a special moment for us as a company because this is our FIRST newborn sighting of the year!

We are also happy to report that Ghost & Co were also sighted in New Quay Bay yesterday along with this little one SO we are hoping this little nugget is a new addition to the local maternity pod.

Time and sightings data will be able to tell us more but for now...
We leave you with some adorable photos from wildlife guide & crew Sarah Michelle Wyer

Winston has been doing this for a quite a few years now, he and all of our team care greatly for you, our customers. We were blessed to carry 499 happy customers on the water and most of them saw dolphins too! A good day was had by all, apart from one lady who arrived late and missed the boat. This one individual created chaos at our office and attempted to spoil the good mood of our happy and considerate staff by shouting and threatening social media attacks if we didn't refund her money for a trip which she'd forgotten to book (and arrived late for). The verbal abuse of our staff from people who cannot accept responsibility for missing their trip is just not acceptable, please avoid the stress of arriving late, be at the pier 10 minutes before your trip departs (minimum). We can often fit you on a trip, even if you forget to pay in advance. Traffic can cause delays at peak times so plan to arrive in New Quay an hour before your trip. If you are late, phone us and we will do our best for you. If you aren't booked however, we won't know that you are coming and are late and therefore we won't be expecting you and won't be calling you to see where you are ( like we do). We will depart with all our passengers, unaware that you are hoping we won't leave on time. Surely we cannot be accountable for leaving without you if we don't even know you planned to join us ? We want you to enjoy your day, please allow us to enjoy our work by being courteous. Boat trips in New Quay need to leave on time because many boats need to get it and out within a few minutes to keep to their schedule so we often don't have any choice but to leave on time.

Dolphin vs Garfish!

Garfish can grow up to 3ft long!
They are also known as Needlefish, Garpike and interestingly 'Mackerel Guardian' as they will shoal with Mackerel.
Past beliefs are that Garfish would lead or protect shoals of Mackerel!
We often see the Dolphins chasing and feeding on them.

INCREDIBLE DOLPHIN ENCOUNTER! 😱😍🐬

Passengers on our 11am one hour trip on the Ermol VI were treated to a full display of close up bow-riding Dolphins and lots of action with multiple breaches (jumping) as a very active pod of Dolphins passed through the Bay. We couldn't have asked for a better trip!

Following skipper Dafydd Lewis amazing video earlier today, here are the photos of the same encounter by wildlife guide Sarah Michelle Wyer

The Dolphins treated us to a fantastic breach sequence on our 9:50am trip on the Ermol VI
We encountered a big pod of an estimated 10/12 Dolphins! Although quite far away in the distance, all of our Jaws dropped when five Dolphins surfaced at once with some breaches!
Heavily cropped photos, however wildlife guide Sarah Michelle Wyer managed to capture a snippet of it!

Our iconic Ermol VI boat is running hour trips all through the day, every day (weather depending).

SALMON ON THE MENU!

Bottlenose Dolphins have up to 104 very sharp teeth, however they do not chew their food. They swallow all their fish whole!
Straight down into their stomachs.
We do see the Dolphins seemingly playing with their food. Tossing fish about, spitting them out of their mouths and swallowing again... Maybe this could be to tenderise the meat making it easier to swallow? πŸ‘€

Photos taken by wildlife guide Sarah Michelle Wyer on Dreamcatcher.

DID YOU KNOW...
Dreamcatcher is the smallest of our fleet... Yet the most powerful πŸ˜‰
She only seats 12 passengers giving a much more personal experience and better all-round viewing experience with the wheelhouse in the center of the boat.
AND
YOU CAN HIRE HER OUT FOR YOUR OWN PRIVATE CHARTER FROM 1-4 HOURS! 😱

PUFFLING IN NEW QUAY BAY!

Spotted and photographed by Wildlife guide/crew Sarah Michelle Wyer our 6:30pm trip on Dreamcatcher!

We have had an extraordinarily high number of Puffin sightings this year from New Quay Bay, collaborating sightings from many reliable sources through the season so far.

Question is, where are they coming from? We know the main source of Puffins in Wales is of course the magical Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire! So maybe the Puffins we are spotting are indeed venturing further for whatever reason to our shores....
Or maybe we have some Puffins that are breeding closer to home! πŸ‘€
So many questions and theories but ones that are incredibly difficult to answer πŸ˜…

Unfortunately this Puffling seemed to be on its own we did not spot any adults - however that being said it was in close vicinity to a flock of rafting Auks and the sea conditions weren't the easiest this evening so hopefully 🀞🏼 adults were nearby.

This Puffling was also very small. Usually they leave their burrows at their breeding sites when fully grown at around 6 weeks of age,
So we are keeping our fingers crossed that this youngster is healthy and survives it's first year.

However... A first for us to spot a Puffling off New Quay Bay!
So... many questions we yet have answers to BUT we are keeping our fingers crossed that this is a look in a positive direction for 'potential' Puffins breeding somewhere in Ceredigion!

Baby Dolphin breach sequence!

Well, we say 'baby' this is more of a 'Toddler' Dolphin. Over a year old but not quite at the age where it is ready to become independent of mum (who was nearby). As calfes grow older they become more experienced as a Dolphin (all thanks to mum) with more curiosity, playfulness, courageousness and maybe a bit of mischief! πŸ˜‹

Slappy!

This Dolphin came to show off to us yesterday!
Appearing out of nowhere, it began a series of breaches right next to the boat whereby it brought half its body out the water and slamming down on its side.
We see this behaviour a lot in our Cardigan Bay population and nickname the Dolphins that do it 'slappy'.
We aren't sure what it means exactly as the Dolphins tend to make a B-line for the boats to do this behaviour next to us and also tend to repeat it between 3-5 times before swimming away.

Great experience for all of us on board the boat though! Sometimes they even splash our passengers 🀣
