Walks - There are a range of local walks to experience either on our doorstep, within the national park where we are located and throughout the Northumberland countryside. Please follow below links which will take you right to the specific pages to see more walks / trails available.
Local walks;
Local grounds - We have a lake and stream running through the grounds of our site which make for great local walks, ideal for families and dogs, the walks are not too strenuous and are minutes away from the comfort our lodges.
Military walk - Follow a high-level route on the Otterburn Ranges in Northumberland National Park to observe wild goats, moorland birds and perhaps, if you are lucky, rare black grouse. The Otterburn Ranges cover 90 square miles of the Northumberland National Park, and have been used by the military since 1911. These Ranges comprise some of the most remote upland areas in the UK, and include several working farms. When military exercises are in progress, the hoisting of red flags around the boundaries indicates restricted access, but at other times, visitors are welcome to drive or walk on the ranges, provided they remain on roads or marked footpaths. Limited access has meant that wildlife, particularly birds, have been able to flourish here, and there’s a chance you may see the rare courtship ritual between male black grouse, known as a lek. Distance 4.5 miles (7.2km) Minimum time 2hrs.
Percy cross - This monument, also known as Battle Stone, lies just north-west of Otterburn. It commemorates the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 and is named after the Percys of Northumberland who lost against their arch enemies, the Douglases of Scotland. The English army suffered a bloody defeat by the Scots, with over a thousand English soldiers killed and their leader Sir Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy held for ransom. You can walk up here from Otterburn to see the site of an iron age hill fort. It was also the winning position of the Earl of Douglas against Harry ‘Hotspur’ Percy in the Battle of Otterburn (1388). For those of a more mythical turn of mind, the Fairy Queen Mab is supposed to reside here.
Popular walks;
Sycamore gap - One of the most popular walks / attractions to Northumberland. It stands in a dramatic dip in Hadrian’s Wall in the Northumberland National Park. In late 2016 it took the crown for English Tree of the Year in the Woodland Trust’s awards. The Roman Milecastle 39 is just to its left and known as Castle Nick, as it sits in a nick in the hillside. A circular walk starting from the visitor center of Housesteads to the Roman Fort and then along the World Heritage Roman wall footpath to the iconic Sycamore Gap.
