The quality of the experience here at Iles Tours is incredibly important to me...

Top of my priority list is that the tours bring the incredible stories of our region to life.

That's why I work hard to gather all the history and archaeological information about the North East of England, before presenting it in an enjoyable and inspiring way, while also providing the best experience for my customers.

I put a lot of hard work into finding the best locations to visit, sourcing the most delicious food and drink for my customers to enjoy, and ensuring the whole experience is a pleasant and positive one by collecting and dropping off at the start and end of every tour.

If all that meets your standards for a good day out, why not book your trip with Iles Tours?

Let's talk archaeology...

Last month I did two different types of Archaeological work. The first was a community archaeology project in Carlisle where a very large Roman building - possibly even imperial in nature - is being excavated.

I spent two days digging alongside other archaeologists, as well as helping out with the community engagement for school groups. That included providing a school workshop explaining the lives of Roman soldiers on Hadrian's Wall!

The second has been recording historic buildings ahead of work being done on them. Working as a freelancer I helped with recording the Keelman Hospital in Newcastle - an amazing building created to provide social care for the Keelmen who were responsible for carrying the coal along the Tyne.

Both of these experiences were amazing and truly enjoyable - I'm honoured to be working on such important projects as part of the history of the North East!

Bonfire Night: The Percy connection!

Everyone knows Guy Fawkes, but have you heard of Thomas Percy? A Northumberland native, Percy was one of the key figures in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. A second cousin once removed of the 9th Earl of Northumberland and the Constable of Alnwick Castle, Percy’s involvement in the infamous attempt to blow up Parliament brought suspicion upon the entire Percy family.

A local lad who got caught up in one of the most notorious plots in British history - Thomas Percy reminds us that Bonfire Night isn’t just about Guy Fawkes. It's a story of discontent, rebellion, and the lengths people would go for their beliefs.

Do you think Thomas Percy was a misguided patriot, or just in too deep? Let me know in the comments!

Want to discover more of the weird stories of the North East at this time of year?

And while I don't do ghost tours, I have recently been working with Tony Liddell who has a podcast focusing on the paranormal history of the North East of England - the perfect listen for Halloween!

Have a listen here 👉🏻https://theboggartwood.uk/

Within the Boggart Wood is a slow meander through the north of England and the Scottish Borders (with forays further afield), collating the regions’ wealth of folklore, ghostlore, superstitions, local history and archaeology.

If you're joining me on one of our tours, here's a quick guide on what to bring along:

Warm clothing layers: The North East isn't as wet as the Lakes or Scotland, but it's always windy! So, pack some layers to stay comfortable throughout the day.

Good walking shoes: Trust me on this one - comfortable footwear is a must. While high heels might look fabulous, they're not ideal for exploring (believe it or not, I once had a guest tackle Hadrian's Wall in high heels - not advisable!).

Cameras: You'll want to capture the stunning landscapes and historic sites we'll be visiting.

Snacks: Keep your energy up as we explore into the rich history of the region.

And that's it! Bring yourself and a readiness to hear all about the history and people of this fabulous region.

I'm looking forward to exploring with you! If you have any questions about what to bring, feel free to drop them below.

Ever wondered what goes into structuring and designing the perfect tour? Here's a little insight into how I prepare for each and every Iles Tour.

Counting heads: First things first, I check the number of passengers - making sure everyone is accounted for and has a space on the tour.

Tickets ready: I sort out all the entry passes to our amazing sites, so you can skip the queues and dive straight into the stories.

Personal touches: I go over any additional information or special requests - whether you're into Roman roads or medieval castles, I tailor the tour just for you.

Smooth pick-ups: I scout out collection locations to organise seamless pick-ups - no one likes waiting around!

Route planning: I refresh myself on any route changes or those tricky tide times (Lindisfarne, I'm looking at you!) to keep our tour flowing effortlessly.

Lunch bookings: For larger groups, I book us a lovely spot for lunch - exploring history sure works up an appetite!

Your experience matters: All this prep is to ensure you have the best experience possible. I can't wait to share the adventure with you!

Follow me for more history fun and I look forward to exploring with you soon!

I have some exciting news to share!

I recently had the privilege of presenting at the Aerial Archaeology Research Group conference in York. It was incredible to explore the early medieval sites of the North East and explore how they relate to Roman roads and hillforts. The connections we're uncovering are absolutely fascinating - history truly is all around us if we know where to look!

I'm also thrilled to announce that I'll be joining Vindomora Solutions as a freelance archaeologist this winter. I'll be out in the field, doing what I love most - digging into the past (quite literally!) and unearthing the stories buried beneath our feet. Expect plenty of muddy boots, exciting discoveries, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of archaeology.

I can't wait to share this journey with you. Stay tuned for updates, photos, and maybe even a few surprises along the way!

Today is World Mental Health Day, and I wanted to share a personal reflection.

While my work often looks like a dream - guiding people around this incredible region and sharing all the things that make it amazing - it comes with its own stresses and strains. Just like any job, there are challenges behind the scenes. For me, it's things like worrying about the Lindisfarne tides and making sure we're off the island in time!

I believe it's so important for all of us to find time away from our daily pressures, to recover and reinvigorate ourselves. Whether it's a quiet moment with a cup of tea, a walk in nature, or simply taking a deep breath, these small acts of self-care can make a big difference.

On this World Mental Health Day, I hope everyone finds a moment to step back, recharge, and rediscover the joy in life.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

Alex

Did you know that Grainger Town in Newcastle is often called one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the UK? I always feel like I've travelled back in time when I'm walking around the streets!

One of my favourite stories from the is about Richard Grainger himself - the visionary developer behind this stunning area. Legend has it that Grainger was so determined to transform Newcastle that he once bought up an entire street, just so he could rebuild it to his grand designs! His collaboration with architect John Dobson gave us gems like Grey Street, which was described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as "one of the finest streets in England".

Every corner of Grainger Town is brimming with history and architectural beauty - from the Theatre Royal to the bustling Grainger Market (which, fun fact, is home to the world's smallest Marks & Spencer!). If you’re an architecture enthusiast or just love a good tale from the past, I'd highly recommend a visit to the Grainger Town.

Fancy exploring these historic streets with me? DM me for details on my tours.

While history might be my number one priority on my tours, I have to confess—I also love a good coffee to keep me and my guests firing on good energy throughout the day.

When I visit Lindisfarne (also known as Holy Island) there's one place I always make a beeline for when I need a hot drink and a little sit-down - Pilgrims Coffee House and Roastery. Not only do they serve fantastic coffee, but they also have a gelato shop right next door - a perfect treat after a day of exploring!

It's a fantastic place to take guests to relax and enjoy a cool gelato at the end of the tour. My personal favourite? Rum and Raisin!

So next time you're on Holy Island, make sure to stop by Pilgrims Coffee. Whether you're in need of a caffeine boost or a delicious ice cream, they've got you covered.

What's your favourite spot to grab a coffee or treat when you're out and about?

Tomorrow is World Tourism Day!

Obviously, I couldn't let it pass by without mentioning the incredible tourism community, of which my business is part.

And the perfect way to celebrate? By letting you all know, once again, that the North East is an amazing region, with so much more to discover and I love sharing it with my incredible clients. I share it in all its aspects from history, modern culture, food and drink and geography.

An early but happy from Iles Tours!

ANGLO SAXON NORTHUMBERLAND

The Ancient warrior kings of Northumberland - Discover the ancient kingdom of Northumbria and its powerful kings

Northumbria was, for much of the 7th and 8th centuries, the most powerful kingdom in the British Isles, with Kings like the ferocious Æthelfrith, saintly Oswald and cunning Oswi able to project power over many other kingdoms in the British Isles. These kings built and created an amazing melting pot of Anglo-Saxon, British, Irish, Scottish and Pictish influence with both the sword and the church.

On this tour we will take you to Ad Gefrin, England’s first whiskey distillery and Anglo-Saxon Museum which tells the story of the Kings of Northumbria and their royal palace at Yevering Bell: Ad Gefrin. We will then travel to Bamburgh where we will visit St. Aidan’s Church and Bamburgh Castle before returning you to your accommodation at the end of the day.

This is an ideal day tour for large groups interested in the Anglo Saxon history of Northumberland. For groups of four or fewer, please get in touch to organise your bespoke booking.

OK folks, over to you.

What tours would you like to see Iles Tours run in 2025?

Sensible suggestions only please - remember that one time I mentioned, as an April Fool's joke, that I was going to start segway tours of Sunderland? It's amazing how many people believed me 🤣

But seriously, I'm interested in your thoughts on this - drop your suggestions in the comments and let's see how imaginative you can be!

The Newcastle Quayside has a rich maritime history that was instrumental in shaping the North East.

As a key hub for shipbuilding, the Quayside was at the heart of industrial innovation, seeing the launch of numerous iconic vessels that sailed the globe. The blend of historic shipyards, bustling docks, and vibrant waterfront life created a legacy that endures in the architecture and stories of the area.

This is still one of my favourite areas of Newcastle to take a tour, while we explore this fascinating maritime heritage of this incredible city.

It's almost time for the children of the region to head back to school - so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to remind you about the work I do with schools.

I love working with schools to deliver talks, tours and workshops. The work I do with many local schools is all about bringing history to life using stories, costumes and props.

If you're involved with a school and would like to book me to visit, I'd love to hear from you. We can work together to bring history into schools and illuminate the fascinating heritage of our region!
