My latest commission was for a portrait of a dog with film star looks and a huge, engaging personality. No pressure, then! However, I'm delighted to say that I've received these kind words from my client, so I think it's mission accomplished after all:

My most recent client kindly left me her thoughts:
"We commissioned Anne to paint a portrait of our granddaughter, Olivia, following her beautiful portrait of our three dachshunds. Anne has captured Olivia’s gentle essence and delicate features perfectly, and also the fine detail on the hand-smocked dress that she was wearing for the sitting. We will treasure this portrait, and know that it will be appreciated for many years to come."

Commissions come about in all kinds of ways, and this lady's portrait happened in a surprising way. I loved meeting her, painting her portrait, and seeing my client's reaction when I showed her the finished piece.

One recent commission was for a relatively unusual subject for me - this delightful little girl, in an heirloom dress. I have painted several times previously for the family, but in the past the models have been their dogs. I was so honoured to have been chosen to paint this precious young member of the family, and her portrait is to be displayed alongside one each of her mother and uncle, painted when they were young children.

If you're interested in painting in soft pastel, with a focus on horses, you may want to join me at the National Horse Racing Museum on Friday 19 July 2024 for a morning workshop (from 10.30am to 1pm).

The plan is to work en plein air, drawing inspiration from the wonderful collection of Stubbs' work on display at the museum.

A hero of the jumping turf, the much-loved and missed, Sire de Grugy, was born on this day in 2006. It was a great honour to get to know him a little and to paint him, as one of the key pieces for my recent exhibition at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket.

Ten years later, in 2016, the beautiful Persuasive won the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot, which is run again today.

Celebrating one of the true greats of the turf and paddocks, the beautiful Ouija Board. Among her brilliant wins was her victory at Royal Ascot in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes. She went on to become the dam of Derby winner and leading sire, Australia. Not only was she a champion racehorse and broodmare but she also had a lovely, kind nature.

Congratulations to giant of the staying-hurdle division, Big Buck's. As handsome as he is talented, this extraordinary horse won 18 consecutive races, including the Grade 1 Stayers' Hurdle and Liverpool Hurdle four times each.

I hope he's thriving and will enjoy a beautiful day today as he turns 21. For those that wonder about his unusual apostrophe... well, that's just how his name was registered (his mother [Buck's] was also registered with a seemingly spare apostrophe). What's in a name?

Happy Birthday to gorgeous Anapurna - Oaks winner, owner of beautifully distinctive ears, and mother of delightful foals. The pride of Meon valley stud.

It was such a pleasure to spend time with her, and her two friends also shown here. Wishing her progeny and all others from Meon Valley the best of luck again this year.

Happy Birthday to a real treasure. Champion sprinter, super-sire, and just a lovely horse to spend time with.

However, Frankel was very displeased and confused by not being the centre of attention when I visited his colleague in the stallion yard.

Delighted to introduce the gorgeous Rufus to you here - a very handsome Fox Red Labrador.

I have been asked to paint several dogs for his family over recent years and, as always, it was a great pleasure to see them when I delivered his portrait to them today. I think Rufus himself seemed to approve of the likeness too.

My latest model was somewhat reluctant to pose (why's a boy supposed to sit and look pretty when there are many more interesting things to do?). However, he did give me enough to work with and I was delighted to paint his portrait, which I'm delivering to his home this week.
