We were asked today to assist in the release of a Great Skua
This particular bird was picked up about five weeks ago by BDMLR ( British Divers Marinelife Rescue) on one of our local beaches in a very poor state
She was taken in and cared for by the Mousehole Bird Hospital who did an amazing job looking after her
We took her about 2 miles offshore where she sat on the boat for about 15 minutes not sure what to do and then she took off landed about 500 m away on the water and proceeded to clean herself presumably to get all the “smell of the human beings” off her.
She then flew off into the distance
We wish her well

We are going to take advantage of the lovely sunny weather again today and will be running a Sea Safari trip from 1 o’clock till three leaving from the harbour at Newquay.

Whilst out on one of our research trips today we came across a partially sunken boat.
We were unable to tow it very far so we cut it adrift and informed the Coast Guard

We were absolutely delighted to have Steve Backshall and his family out on the boat this week
They have been here on holiday and chose to come out on a boat trip with us.
Steve does an amazing amount for wildlife globally so we were very happy to let him see some of the delights of Cornwall

Well, I’m guessing that the Whales will not be hanging around too much longer as we went across the bay today with the sonar on and hardly saw any herring.
It’s not entirely clear where they go or where they come from
some will head north for our summer but some may stay in the tropics.
It’s all about food for them. They will travel great distances to find plentiful supplies of fish 
We have been very fortunate here in Cornwall to have them stay for so long

 IT’S INTERNATIONAL WHALE DAY !!

So for the first time in “Newquay Sea Safari’s and Fishing”history I am able to post pictures of Whales (which we were lucky enough to see in the Newquay area today) on INTERNATIONAL WHALE DAY


 we are so pleased that the population of humpback whales appears to be recovering after the many years of whaling

Well, we have had an incredible week here at Newquay Sea Safari’s and Fishing.
If you had asked me five years ago about whale watching trips here in Newquay I would have just laughed…….
How wrong I was
