This day on 19 December 1981, the entire crew of the Penlee Lifeboat were lost attempting to rescue the crew and passengers onboard a stricken coaster.

That stormy December evening, the Penlee RNLI lifeboat Solomon Browne battled heavy seas and hurricane force winds to reach the Union Star, a stricken coaster being swept towards the coast of Cornwall.

After several attempts to get alongside the coaster, the lifeboat crew rescued four of the eight people onboard. But rather than turn back to shore, they made a final heroic rescue attempt and all radio contact was lost.

Today we remember the brave RNLI crew on the Solomon Browne lifeboat who lost their lives that night.

• Coxswain William Trevelyan Richards

• Second Coxswain and Mechanic James Madron

• Assistant Mechanic Nigel Brockman

• Emergency Mechanic John Blewett

• Crew Member Charles Greenhaugh

• Crew Member Kevin Smith

• Crew Member Barrie Torrie

• Crew Member Gary Wallis.

The argument over which way you should put your jam and cream on your scones seems to have finally been settled by a study carried out at the University of Eastern England. Months of research have pulled together a large amount of data that appears to suggest that there is a scientific reason why putting the jam on first is the correct way.

Professor Stanley Stead-Mountfitchet, who led the research, stated “ It seems that by adding the jam first and then biting into the cream the chemical reactions created by the taste buds in the top of the mouth are tricked by the soft neutral taste of the cream, giving a sharp reaction when you reach the tangy jam. When the experiment is reversed the taste buds have already been awoken by the jam before you reach the cream, so there is less of a contrast, and because of this you don’t enjoy the sensation of eating the product so much”

The news will come as no surprise to inhabitants of Cornwall, who for years have argued that ‘jam first’ is the correct, and only way to eat scones.

We are continuing our Cornish language weekly reads with ‘Teach your dog Cornish’ by Anne Cakebread. This book is great fun and a really good way to learn a few Cornish words and phrases. There are over fifty to practise including gorta (stay), esedh (sit), deus omma (come here) and of course kergh e (fetch). A very helpful pronunciation guide follows each phrase and there are accompanying colourful illustrations. Phrases that can be used in non-dog related situations are also covered - pennbloodh lowen (happy birthday), our favourite – a allav vy kavos pasti? (can I have a pasty?, and also meur ras (thank
you) which is the theme of this year’s Speak Cornish week. 😁 💬 🐶
