Thank you Lynn Barrett for the other side of the story. This ‘Yukka’ ‘Torbay Palm’ or Cordyline Australis as it should known is actually a New Zealand tree!

“The species Cordyline australis is a tall tree endemic to New Zealand where it grows from the far northerly subtropical areas of the North Island to the chilly southern areas of the South Island. It is typically found in forest margins, river banks and open places, and is also abundant in wet swampy area.”

Bought about 25 years ago from Jack Oliver at Bladnoch as a couple of feet high youngster, often used as the centre piece in a pot. It was bronze.
In the middle now it has a healthy population of turtle doves whom have the perfect nest. The flowers are a bee magnet and it has survived several floods. A wonderful tree.

Still looking at ship building the first ship to be built at the Isle of Whithorn that is mentioned was built b y a young man named George Broadfoot, in the years 1789 -99. Broadfoot was the son of the farmer, who farmed Cutcloy. He built the ship at the end of the Bay, now known as the Joiner’s Rocks, fitted her out, and then sailed her to Boston, America. The name of the ship was ‘Cutcloy.’
No doubt many ships were built after that at the Joiner’s Rocks, but there is no record although some of those mentioned in the previous post may have been built there.
The McMeeken family set u the boatyard between the church and the Steam Packet and some of the previous list were probably built there. Peter McMeeken's son was keener on sailing ships than building them (he actually sailed the Atlantic 300 times and never lost a man) and so the shipyard was sold to the McWilliam family who had come to the Isle from Kirkcowan. The McWilliams built mainly larger vessels. It has prove difficult to trace them all but those I have found are:
COMET (schooner)
JANET MCWILLIAM (brig)
WIGTOWNSHIRE (barque)
CAPTAIN HAWTHORN (brig)
GEM (smack)
ISLE OF WHITHORN (barque)
AID (barque) (Board's minutes dated 08 Nov. 1869, the vessel having been arrested, condemned and sold to foreigners for alleged damage to cargo at Ilpslada, U.S.A. and Cert of Registry left there for daclamation of late registered owner. William McWilliam the late owner has been called upon to obtain and deliver up the Cert. of Registry if it be in existence.)
LOCHNAW (barque)
PATRIOT ( barque) launched 1872
As noted there was problems with the AID due to the build causing damage to the cargo. There were many claims against the McWilliams causing them to have to end the boatyard and sell the patented slipway to Carrickfergus. There was enough good ship timbers left to build a shop on the site of the boatyard, a shop which served the community for well over a hundred years.

Our brilliant local history groups on Facebook local history groups have provided these fascinating images for which I’m delighted and very thankful.
Most of the locations are still easily recognised.
Sadly the shop has gone which stood opposite the Pink House.
