Another sunny September day encouraged us to explore, walk and swim in the River Pattack. A circular route of 7 miles from Gallovie Farm via the Pattack Falls, Mrs Brown's pool and along the river and landrover tracks to loop back towards Gallovie. Definitely recommend trying this walk (or cycle)for the landscape views and stunning waterfalls along the river.

Today made the most of the sunny skies and did a new version (to us) by Walkhighlands of a much loved walk to the Iron Age Fort in Laggan. The panoramic views from the fort were memorizing. Varied walk through woodland and open hill side and we did not see another person all afternoon.

We had an added bonus of watching 3 sea eagles circling over head too. Wonderful views and a great variation to the walk going through the Black Wood from the Pattack Falls car park. A bit overgrown in places but well worth the effort.

A beautiful breakfast guest arrived on our doorstep this morning! Wonderful autumn colours in her feathers.

Did you know what the Cairngorm National Park is one of the least-visited in the UK even though it is the largest? Tourists tend to head to Aviemore, with the wider Badenoch area is far less known. Badenoch or "drowned land" is a large portion of the national park, and includes Dalwhinnie, Newtonmore and Kingussie. An outdoor explorerโ€™s dream, with acres of mountains, lochs, forests and waterfalls to visit.

Visit Cairngorms, the local tourist information website (www.visitcairngorms.com) has put together itineraries featuring cycling and walking routes, music and local stories celebrating Scottish culture to help you explore this wonderful area. Pull on your boots and getting walking!
It is possible to easily explore Badenoch by train or bus. Scotrail connects the area with Inverness and the south while the Caledonian Sleeper serves Dalwhinnie, Newtonmore and Kingussie from London.
Autumn is the perfect time of year to explore and Steading 5 still has some availability in October for a short break.

Did you know that oil extracted from Bog Myrtle repels the Highland Biting Midge and is used as an ingredient in commercial repellents?
It is a common plant in boggy areas of the Highlands and is known to support nearly 70 species of insect, and fixes nitrogen in the soil through its relationship with specific bacteria. Crushed Bog Myrtle leaves have a very distinctive scent, similar to Eucalyptus oil.
