Looking for something adventurous to do whilst at Steading 5 Balvatin Cottages ? Have you tried the G2 Zip Trek at Alvey near Aviemore ? It's an exciting aerial journey along 12 zip wires through a stunning pine forest, criss crossing high above the Alvie Gorge. A great way to create memories, seeing and experiencing a stunning part of the Cairngorm National Park. The Zips take you from the top of the hill back down to the bottom of the gorge. The whole experience takes around 2 hours and can be enjoyed year round. We have tried both the day and night experience and loved it.

As you travel in small groups with a guide, its a perfect way for a family or group of friends to try a real Highland adventure.

Another local family-friendly favourite is to explore Creag Bheag. Perfect for an introduction to hill walking. The start is 3 miles from Steading 5 in the neighbouring town of Kingussie.

The landmark hill Creag Bheag (small rock) in Kingussie provides an excellent circular walk of 3 miles long with panoramic views of Kingussie, Loch Gynack, the Spey Valley and the Mondaliath mountain range. The sheltered stone seat or known as our coffee and cake spot is thoughtfully situated to take in all the amazing views.

It should take approximately 2.5 hours. Starting from the Ardvonie car park in Kingussie and takes in tracks, well maintained paths and expansive views of the Golf Course. Start by walking up the road from the car park taking the Mill Trail along the Alt Mor burn as you gradually climb up following the Golf Course Circular signs and then the signposted route through the birch woodland to the summit. The return route is via an open moorland path back through Kingussie to the Ardvonie park.

See Kingussie Paths leaflet for more details.

Nestled in the breathtaking scenery of the Cairngorms National Park, Newtonmore boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with the Highland way of life. A stay in this charming village also offers a unique opportunity to delve into the past through the lens of two exceptional museums in the village: the Clan Macpherson Museum and the Highland Folk Museum. Both are free to enter and are fascinating glimpse of local history.
The origins of Newtonmore can be traced back to the 1820s when construction began on the "New-town-on-the-Moor." Evidence of early development can be seen today in the Main Street. The arrival of the 1765 road bridge over the River Spey and the 1863 railway, significantly increased the local population and making it a popular destination since then.
Sport has always played a vital role in the community. Shinty, a traditional Highland sport, has been enjoyed since the 1800s. The local team, founded in 1895, was instrumental in establishing the Camanachd Association and continues to thrive today, attracting a passionate following in the Highland League. A visit to a game is a must do! Have a look at the village website www.newtonmore.com for more information
