HERITAGE IN ACTION - WILDFLOWERS AND WATER

Join HLH Ranger Saranne on Heritage in Action day this Wednesday 31st July to learn how to encourage wildlife into your garden.

Saranne will be based down at Aultlarie Croft between 12pm and 2pm, with examples of wildlife-friendly habitats. Come along and discover what pond life we’re supporting in our wee pond in the Croft too.

On your way to the Croft have a look at our beautiful wildflower meadow outside Am Fasgadh. It’s getting really well established now, with ox-eye daisies, lady’s bedstraw, common knapweed, viper’s bugloss, bird’s-foot trefoil and docken, to name just a few of the species!

As ever, we’ll have a fantastic range of activities on across the site this Heritage in Action day between 11am and 4pm.

Come along to see demos of thatching, metal-working, spinning and textiles crafts and coracles. Try your hand at some traditional games in the Croft. The Badenoch Waulking Group will be performing the waulking of the cloth at the Church between 2pm and 4pm.

See you there!

Everyone needs a hand now and again, and it's that time of year for the Newtonmore Highland Games for the next week we need volunteers help set the games up. If you are available during the day there are always a few folk at the Eilean. If not, after work, about 6pm for a couple of hours would be great.
Steven Macarthur, Grant Munro or Donald Forrest can always find you a job!
Any time you have is a great help πŸ˜€ Thanks!

Finally the ling heather is appearing. It's a bit late this year, maybe the wet spring that we've had? And there's many other lovely purples everywhere in the glen and around the village...πŸ’œ
Did you know...The most common type of heather in Scotland is 'Ling' heather which is hardy and fast growing, and loves wet soil. You'll see it all over moorland areas and it's at its at its best usually in August.
But we also have bell heather too, which tends to come earlier and is found in a variety of harsh habitats and particularly likes dry, well-drained soils The dark purple-pink, bell-shaped flowers appear between July and September, and heather is an important nectar source for all kinds of insects including honey bees, buff-tailed and red-tailed bumblebees, ruby tiger moths and rare silver-studded blue butterflies.
The honey that results from bees that feed on heather is dark and fragrant. 🍯🐝
