Have you read Sam Hanna Bell's "December Bride"? Set in the early years of the 20th century it depicts the lives of a small rural community on the shores of Strangford Lough. The Lough itself is a beautiful but bleak presence throughout the novel. A wonderfully atmospheric book, it captures the resilience and spirit of people and place in times long gone.

A wild and wonderful place.
In the early 1800s Lord Londonderry reclaimed 200 acres of land at the north of Strangford Lough by building the Floodgates. The reclaimed land is now fertile farmland which edges on to saltmarsh and sandflats at the north of the Lough, home to a great variety of wetland birds. Thanks to Brian Milligan for this image taken on an early morning Floodgates walk.
