Last year I did a private tour of Kearney for Maureen from England and this year she has returned to holiday in this area with her friend Katie. This time she booked a private tour of Portaferry for this morning. It was windy along the shore but these lovely ladies enjoyed the fascinating stories of Portaferry’s history and people. For me it is always a good sign when people book another tour.

What an amazing image of the skies over the State Care site at Ballycopeland Windmill following the recent aurora borealis display across parts of NI.
If anyone captured images featuring other State Care sites then we would love for you to share them!

Earlier today I did a very special private tour for a lovely English family with a direct connection to Quintin Castle on the Ards Peninsula. The Castle is privately owned and we were granted exclusive access to it. Kate’s grandmother was Louise King Hall and she lived in the castle with her sister in the early 20th Century.
It was both wonderful and emotional for Kate to visit Quintin Castle for the first time and she recalled stories her grandmother told her about the castle. I shared the many stories about the castle and the colourful characters who have lived there through the centuries. It was a special tour for me too and it was brilliant to be able to enhance their very special experience. A huge thank you to the owners of the Castle for making these treasured memories possible for Kate and her family.

Very interesting ancient site. I have researched the lives of some of those for whom this was their last resting place. Their stories are fascinating.

Friday Fact
Slans Graveyard south of Cloughey on the Ards Peninsula is a very ancient site and is built on a former rath or ringfort from the 1st millennium AD. The ruined medieval church within the enclosure was mentioned in the Taxation of Pope Nicholas in 1306.
The site offers stunning 360 degree views over the Ards Peninsula. Park at the roadside and follow the fenced pathway uphill. An interpretation panel at the entrance will tell you more. Take care if exploring the graveyard and ruins as the ground is uneven.

In glorious spring sunshine this morning the Ards Peninsula and Strangford Lough looked stunningly beautiful. Our American guests were blown away by the natural beauty of the Lough and the surrounding landscape. They enjoyed a stroll along the shore in Portaferry, some chatting to the fishmonger selling locally caught fish. Further along the skipper of the St Brendan was getting his boat ready for the tourist season and one of our guests had a chat with him.Guests were interested in story of the Brent geese and one observant traveller spotted some on the Lough. Everyone enjoyed hearing the call of the seabirds, breathing the sea air, watching the historic ferry while drinking in the beauty all around them. A day when it is great to be alive!
It was a great tour with plenty of stories and craic about this unique place. There just wasn’t enough time to share all the stories!
