"Will we really be hiking in the heat?" Yes, yes we will! 😎

Montenegro is proper hot this week 🥵, and this question comes up a lot. Wondering how we do it? Read on for our top tips to hike as safely as possible - and enjoy it - in hot temperatures (hint, there's a lot of swimming!).

1️⃣ Know Your Context
Plan your route with water sources to refill your bottle, find some shade, and ideally, a river to cool off in. 💧

2️⃣ Communicate Your Plan
Save local emergency numbers in your phone, keep your phone fully charged, and always let someone know your plans and estimated trail time.

3️⃣ Use Your Time Wisely
Start early - the morning is prime adventure time! Avoid the extreme heat between 1 and 4 PM. You'll find us lunching with locals or chilling in the river during this time.

4️⃣ Keep Cool and Hydrated
Follow water sources if possible. Summer is made for river hiking! Stay hydrated by drinking a large glass of water before bed and before you head out, and take regular stops to drink water while you're out (carry extra water if there are no refill opportunities). Wear a hat and/or buff soaked in water to keep cool. 💦

5️⃣ Know the Symptoms of Heat Stroke
Discuss symptoms with your group and have a plan. If someone gets irritable, headachy, or confused, stop, drink water, apply suncream, eat a snack, or all of the above. Always carry rehydration salts.

6️⃣ Don't Push It
Your body can't perform the same in high temperatures. When it's 37+ degrees (warmer than body temperature), adapt your plans, hike shorter distances, and spend more time in those lovely water holes. Know your limits.

🎉 Huge congratulations to our group from England’s North for completing an epic cross-border trek from Montenegro to Albania last week! 🇲🇪 🇦🇱

Despite facing unpredictable weather – from blazing sun to intense hailstorms – they powered through and embraced every moment out there on the iconic Peaks of the Balkans trail. ⛰️

👏 Special shoutout to our amazing tour leader, Dino! Not only did he get our guests safely through the breathtaking Prokljetije mountain range, but he also made it back to his hometown, Gusinje, just in time to compete in the Prokljetije VK – a challenging 3.9k race with a 1,000m climb in the stunning Grebaja valley. 🏞️🏃‍♂️

We love our Montenegrin sun ☀️ - even when it disappears to allow a summer storm (who else was here for Tuesday’s weather dramas? ⚡ 😮).

When it rains, you can relax, knowing the clouds will soon roll back to reveal the most perfect of days; warm, sunny and with the best visibility for all those incredible landscapes.

Our Lake Skadar guests had the best time yesterday out caving, jumping into hidden waterfalls, taking in incredible scenery, wild swimming in a river that could have stepped out of Africa, riding in our 4x4s though the Montenegrin savannah and back for a stunning sunset at Villa Miela Lake Retreat.

Who says you have to go to Sweden or Norway for an epic kayaking and camping experience? 🚣‍♂️🏕️

Our very own Ben is just back from guiding an exclusive trip for adventure-loving Andrea and Axel that took place right here at Montenegro's answer to Lake Vänern.

Day one kicked off with stunning views, crystal clear waters, and that feeling of being one with nature 🌲🌊. And this was the theme for our four stunning days on the water! Along the way, our clients got to learn some serious bushcraft skills like making fire 🔥, crafting woodland chairs, fishing for our own dinner 🎣, and even spear throwing. We even made our own bread in the wild 🍞.

At Raduš, home to Lake Skadar's deepest natural spring, we took a pit stop for a refreshing swim 🏊‍♂️ and comfy beds at Danilo and Radmila's fishing cottage. Sunrise was amazing! 🌅

Fiery heatwave on our hands (summer came early! ☀️), we ended our trip a day early to go visit waterfalls. What an adventure!

We're thrilled to see one of our local fishing villages grace the pages of the Daily Telegraph recently for its “surprising East Asian charm”. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/montenegro/montenegrin-fishing-village-east-asian

“Ancient wooden buildings, traditional čun boats and lakes blanketed with water lilies make the tiny village of Karuč feel a world away’, writes journalist Jennifer Ratcliffe.

And it’s true not just of Karuč, but of all the traditional fishing settlements dotted on Lake Skadar’s shores.

It’s the echos of Southeast Asia that first attracted us to this lake - the Balkans' biggest - years ago, when we were fresh off the backpacker trail. We simply couldn’t believe that such exotic beauty had been hiding right on our doorstep in Europe.

🖼️ Karst limestone mountains and islets that could have stepped out of a Chinese ink painting? Yes!
🪷 Water lilies and dugout wooden fishing boats just like in Vietnam, Burma or Cambodia. Yes and yes!

We later learned that Lake Skadar had even doubled for China in an Italian movie!

💦 It was such a great fun hosting our first bunch of families at our Lake Skadar holiday base. The kids, all aged between 7 and 10 and super energetic, especially loved our water-based activities, such as kayaking and cold water swimming.

🥾 But also our nature hikes and the Montenegrin safari to a cave and a stunning viewpoint defined this action-packed week.

Thank you to our most recent group of guests whose good mood was contagious. 🙏

✅ The past activity week at our Lake Skadar retreat Villa Miela was framed by some special highlights. How come?

First of all, it was the first time of this season that we kayaked on the beautiful Morača river. Two of our guests have never been kayaking before, but managed that 12 km loop bravely. 😉 A vast number of (water) birds created extra memories for all of us.

🌦️ By the way, the rainy weather in the morning hours reminded our adventureres rather of England than South Europe. However, we kept on smiling and the sun reappeared later on - good conditions for our following hiking days. And a lovely 5-star review.

As former backpackers, the Lonely Planet is our travel bible, so we’re especially happy to see co-founder Emma interviewed about her favourite spots to kayak at Lake Skadar.

Lonely Planet remains a cut above other guide books. Author Peter Dragicevich has done painstaking research in person (tough job!) to sort the wheat from the chaff, and lead you to Montenegro’s good stuff. His writing is hugely entertaining as well as informative. It's well worth buying a copy ahead of your trip!

Protecting our planet starts with us all! 🌍

Thanks to everyone who came together to clean up Lake Skadar at the weekend, and on such a gorgeous sunny day. Our team at Villa Miela, a local school class, and even some of our guests pitched in to help, bringing our kayaks to clear rubbish from the water channel at Virpazar, and along the banks of the Orahovo river.

"I've never seen anything like this before!" 🤩

Our current yoga guest Debbie couldn't believe her eyes out kayaking with us this week. We'd taken our group to admire Lake Skadar's nesting Grey Herons (soooo many!), ahead of enjoying a glass of homemade pomegranate drink with the nuns of Beška island monastery, then the short paddle back to the white pebble sands of Murići beach.

And this, after a perfect morning yoga workshop on Villa Miela's outside deck courtesy of our brilliant visiting instructor, Yoga with Fiona, as well as delicious homemade brunch prepared by Elaine at Cooks of Kotor .

🧘‍♀️Our yoga retreat has been in full swing since Sunday, and it's just been and continues to be amazing. These photos from our first few days don't do it justice, because you just have to be there. 😉

🛶 **Big Virpazar Clean-Up This Saturday!** 🌿

Lake Skadar is one of Europe’s wildest treasures, but it needs some TLC to keep its shores, trails and roadsides pristine!

If you’re in Montenegro this Saturday, come join us at Virpazar for our regular annual community clean-up, starting at **10am**.

We'll be hitting the lake with our kayaks to clean up those hard to reach spots, and there's 15 spots available to join us. Shoot us a message to reserve one, or bring along your own kayak. 😊 Gloves and bin bags will be provided.

There's also a land-based clean-up happening at the same time you could also join, and afterwards there'll be food, drinks and free boat tours and kayaking, all to show our appreciation for your help.

🚶‍♀️Hike 'n' like 👍 One of our favourite Lake Skadar loops starts at Villa Miela's doorstep and leads to a beautiful medieval village nearby.

‍🎓This peaceful place on earth was already founded in the 10th century, whereas most of the architecture that we see today dates back to the 14th century. Just imagine you can touch walls that are more than 600 years old!

👀On the way to this historical site we not only explore a royal mansion, we can also enjoy lovely lake views, see colourful bee hives and much more. Let's just keep our eyes open.

🥇Traditional lunch on our friend's terrace gives new energy for the walk back to the villa. Who wouldn't fancy a dip in the pool then?

Isn't this how Mondays are meant to be?

Exploring, admiring and enjoying beautiful nature, as free as one of Lake Skadar's birds!

Speaking of which, a pelican was flying just above our boat this time last week. 🤩 We were on a trip to visit Kom Monastery, famed for its surviving 15th century frescoes, and its organic produce like the huge jar of honey we treated ourselves to.

Returning along nature-packed waterways, we were reminded why this is one of our favourite boat trips to recommend for guest free days at this time of year, when it can be too cold for swimming (just for some! 😉). You get to see carpets of water lilies and all the wildlife that accompanies them, plus the views from the island monastery are spectacular.

Kayaking to the island monasteries is always special, but Sister Evangelija really pulled one out of the bag this week; upon seeing how many kids were in our party, she allowed them to ring the church bells (a first)! They got so carried away, other sisters came out to investigate - apparently this combination usually means the archbishop is visiting!

We spent yesterday exploring the astoundingly beautiful Mrtvica Canyon hidden just beyond Podgorica. With its bright blue gushing river, a ‘Gate of Wishes’ made of natural rock and a section of trail carved high on the cliff by the Yugoslav army, this is a dizzying, breathtaking adventure and somewhere our local guides often bring our more intrepid guests.
