Born in New Zealand, Appleton later settled in the UK and established his studio in the creative and historic heart of Norwich, East Anglia. Drawing from over fifteen years’ experience as an accomplished practicing artist, an influential six years spent working in the Old Masters department of a major London a
uction house, and an ongoing fascination with the enigmatic world of birds and beasts, he brings both a substantial knowledge of traditional techniques and a discerning contemporary eye to his distinctive style of portraiture. In a playful nod towards the materials and finishes associated with early religious iconography, Appleton’s jewel-like works are produced entirely by hand using oil paint onto solid oak panels and gilded in 23.5ct gold or silver leaf. These versatile panels can be displayed as freestanding objects, or hung on a wall with the discreet hook fitting provided. Each and every painting is as utterly unique as its subject.
