Day 995 (05/12/2024)

Hereford (First visit)

For my Thursday this week, it was a trip down to Herefordshire for the small Cathedral City of Hereford itself, sat on the banks of the River Wye! I made it around 23 pubs, some that I would have liked to get done didn't open early enough so I couldn't get along to them on this visit but I'll be back to do them soon!

As always you can follow my route around and see ALL of the pubs I visited yesterday over at youtube.com/ and be sure to hit that SUBSCRIBE button while you're there and keep up to date with all the crawls we do!

Here's how my Wednesday unfolded...

I rolled into Hereford for 1pm and headed for a pub named after my late dad's favourite TV Show... 'Grandstand' (I'm sure it wasn't actually named AFTER the TV show but you get the drift haha) which is a big Greene King, Hungry Horse pub set up on the outskirts. Standard GK beer line up, split into bar and dining sides with friendly staff, a pool table and TVs in the bar...

Heading two minutes around the outskirts bought up my 2nd Greene King pub of the day already... 'The Monument' which was another that was buzzing with early lunch time diners. A really smartly presented pub that had Wye Valley's Butty Back on as a guest ale alongside it's own... and had the GK Pale known as Ice Breaker on the keg side which is probably the best brew thar Greene King currently make... a nice friendly pub, pool table and huge screens all over for the sport...

Stop three was 'The Plough' which is a Star Pubs/Heineken place. A gorgeous old pub with super stained glass still in the windows showing off the old Smoke Room area and bar. A really well presented pub with lovely lad called Conor doing a fine job of welcoming people in. The food menu looks good, they've got 2 very decent real ales on offer and a good mix amongst their taps... top boozer this!

Next one along is 'The Horse & Groom' which feels very much like a locals pub... 10 keg offerings on their taps but no ales in this one... pub split into lounge and bar sides with a pool table and friendly welcome...

I then headed across the city so that I could take in one last one before checking in at my hotel (White Lodge) which bought up my 3rd Greene King in 5 for today... this one being the 'Rose & Crown' and it's pretty similar in style to The Monument... no Ice Breaker in this one but they do have Level Head which is one of GKs other decent brews. Terrible ale selection with just GK IPA and Abbot but they do have several of the Lilley's ciders alongside a decent mixture on their taps...

After checking in at my hotel, I headed down the back street and to 'The Brewers Arms' which is a belting little locals pub! Lovely people running it and a very decent tap mix of beers that bought me up a new (and incredible) Wye Valley beer called 'Avatar' that is WELL WORTH checking out if you're a fan of a good tropical pale... great little pub with great people...

Then around to 'The Barrels' which was formerly known as 'The Lamb Hotel' and still has the original name on show outside as well as its new one. This is the flagship pub for the incredibly Wye Valley Brewery and, before they outgrew the space, was where all the Brewing magic took place...
It's a pretty incredible pub with a phenomenal line up of beers from Wye Valley as well as plenty of stuff to keep other's happy. A huge pub with central bar, a fire going and a huge beer yard space to the back. Whether its cask or keg you're after... THIS is one you MUST visit!

I headed the 6 minute walk around the city then... in order to get to 'The King's Fee' which is the local 'Spoons...
This old cinema building has certainly been put to good use and looks great inside. Carpet is very 'Crystal Maze' but I loved it! Incredibly friendly and in the ball staff too, particularly the young lady with the pink in her hair! Some decent guest ales on including one called 'Santi Freeze' that obviously... I had to go for πŸ˜‚

Next door is 'Hogarths' which brings up my 6th of this particular chain so far... always decked out nicely and pretty spacious... 2 ales on (all be it, one of them is Doom Bar so basically just one ale on) and a really friendly lad on the bar. Good keg offering, plenty of TV screens and a pool table... decent bars these...

Just one further door down is 'Doyle's' which is an independent sports bar... 3 great Wye Valley ales on offer and plenty of choice amongst the tap offering... although the line up is a little 'Heineken' looking with a few terrible options in there...
A long, narrow pub that has plenty of space, plenty of screens and a friendly way about it...

10 pubs already down and it was time to head for some scran to ensure that this adventure lasted as long as possible... and in Hereford, I'd heard that THE place to eat was 'The Beefy Boys' for one of their award winning burgers... and who am I to argue... so I took a wet and soggy walk around the city centre and settled down in an already PACKED out establishment to sample the goodness...
I ordered a double thick patty 'OG' burger and the Pastrami Fries and despite the fries being a meal on their own... there is nothing but 10/10 star power going into the food here... it is KILLER... burgers are amazing, staff are top notch and the whole vibe of this place makes it very easy to see how they have won so many awards...

Dead opposite The Beefy Boys is 'The Wellington' which is a large pub in an L shape that's run by the same folks at 'The Brewers Arms' - another dead friendly place with town centre pub vibe as opposed to its sister pub. No ales on in this one but a decent tap mix and plenty of TVs all across the pub...

After taking my life in my hands by navigating across the dual carriageway, back towards where I'd been a few hours ago... I made it safely to 'Beer In Hand' which I'd already known would be worth braving the elements for as this is a brilliant little craft beer bar!
Some excellent beer offerings from some of the UKs brightest and best breweries on offer and a cosy, welcoming environment for all... Thursdays are also PIZZA nights and there were some great looking pizzas feeding some very happy faces...
Can wise... there is a brilliant selection of stuff going on as well... a belter of a bar!

I made it back across the road (via the subway which would probably have been the sensible option on the way across the first time) and my next stop was to another great little craft beer place called 'Hereford Beer House' where I sampled a RED DIPA (8%) from Burnt Mill brewing which was pretty great...
Another great little tap house this with friendly service and a cool, modern vibe...

It was 'The Orange Tree' up next and this belter is a Black Country Ales pub... so we all already know what I'm gonna say about this one don't we? πŸ˜‚
As expected... I absolutely LOVED this place... it's got a belting cask line up with plenty of excellent breweries represented...
A former RECTORY building... that's full of character and charm with sloping floors and low ceilings... this one is absolutely top notch!

Down to 'The Black Lion' which is Hereford's oldest pub, dating back to 1550 and is rumoured to have no less than FOURTEEN different ghostly spirits still wandering its halls... the most famous of which is a young girl called 'Alice' who can often be heard cackling to herself in a corner...
A glorious old pub with plenty of original beams and features, 3 good ales on and a lovely ambience...

A 4 minute walk back towards the city bought me to 'The Stables' which is an old coaching inn that's now a 'horse racing pub' - rustic and charming inside with a lovely host running the bar... no ales on at my time of visit and a restaurant space on the first floor... a charming little space...

Along the road for 30 seconds and you'll come to the 'Queens Arms' - and gorgeous old pub building full of rustic charm and black beams... this one was pretty bustling with a karaoke on which was great to see! A couple of ales on and good vibe...

It was the 'Lichfield Vaults' up next which has a very strange mix of Heineken and Marston's style beers... the saving graces of which are the presence of Bass and Timothy Taylor's Landlord amongst the cask...
A nice old pub with some lovely old wood and fireplaces and a nice brick interior in the back room...

Stop 20 of the night, after having found 'The Golden Fleece' all in darkness was 'Gordon Bennetts' which stays open until 3am and had some live music going on. A decent blend of punters in of all ages and a nice set up that has some cask ale as well as plenty amongst the taps... definitely an excellent late night option...

With time fast disappearing on me... I headed for 'The Imperial Inn' which is a large, old Stonegate pub with the white frontage and black beams! Excellent beer line up with 5 cask ales and some good options on the taps. Dog friendly and full of character and charm...

Further along that road back towards Beefy Boys is the amazing 'Jam Factory' which reminds me of a proper underground music bar, almost reminiscent of something built into the side of a cave inside... it's long and narrow, it's funky, it's got all the right vibes and it's a killer venue... I could happily have stayed in this one all night long!

With 'The Herdsman' already closed, it headed back towards my hotel and around the bend for one final nightcap which took me along to the late night venue called 'Kerry' - a historic old building now housing area late night bar/nightclub vibe. It's very modern looking inside and most of the furniture has gone to make way for a dance floor. Door staff very polite and I can see it begins a popular end of night haunt, staying open until 2am, 7 nights a week...
They do have one of those awful 'punching' machines though πŸ€”

I really enjoyed Hereford, a super little city with really friendly people. I'll definitely be back to get to the places I didn't make it to!

Personally, I can't think of anything worse... why wind up drunk lads to get aggressive and think they can fight?
