Day 7 and 8 Cordoba to Moncarapacho and Vale do Lobo

Yesterday we arrived at our final destination of Vale do Lobo on the Algarve coastline.

From Cordoba we passed by the city of Seville where we had stayed 2 years ago on the last road trip. We loved it but couldn’t quite face another 40c city tour so kept on going! On the outskirts of Seville a police van pulled alongside us with his sirens on and I had ‘uh oh’ moment but turns out he just wanted to look at the car, gave us a wave and carried on his way with important police business!

We crossed the border into Portugal and our final stay was in the hills just beyond Faro. I’d had my eye on the Octant chain of hotels for a while so this seemed the perfect excuse to spend our last afternoon of the tour doing absolutely nothing.

We have travelled 2529km with a driving time of just under 35 hours over 8 days.

From the glitz and oh so glam of the South of France, to the rolling hills of Provence, to the secret Spanish hinterland and the historic cities of Granada and Cordobo to our final stop by the golden and endless coastline of the Algarve.

Our journey has been a fabulous adventure with incredible diversity. It’s been a great lesson in how vast the world is and how much can be seen even in just a week.

I’m grateful to you all for your company and comments along the way. I hope I’ve inspired you to consider a road trip of your own and, it goes without saying, that if I have, I’d love to help!

Now time for some serious washing machine action before we hit the beach.

Day 6 Granada to Cordoba

Yesterday was our shortest day on the road at just over 200km, but was one of the prettiest. Our journey took us through field after field of olive groves and we passed by a host of pueblo blancos overlooked by mighty castles perched on hilltops.

Cordoba has been on my bucket list for a long time. It actually has more UNESCO protected sites than Rome, but there’s one building alone that tops most people’s reasons to visit and that’s the magnificent Mezquita.

This mesmerising multi-arched Mosque Cathedral is considered to be one of the world’s greatest Islamic buildings. Dating back to AD 784 it gives you a taste of the sophisticated culture that flourished in the city when Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side. It was simply stunning and absolutely worth putting this city on your list for this alone.

But there's so much more to Cordoba than its rich history. Winding stone alleys abloom with brightly coloured pots give way to piazzas at every turn and bars and tapas restaurants spill onto the pavements.

Hammams played an important role in Cordoba’s history and we were lucky enough to have original Roman baths in our hotel (check out my stories for my ‘you’ve been framed’ moment!). Our hotel is also on the site of preserved Roman ruins which we peered down on through the glass floor of the dining room whilst eating breakfast!

Cordoba was worth my 20 year wait - but next time I’ll skip August - sight seeing in 40c temperatures is hot work!

Today we bid adios to Spain. We have loved your many faces but it’s time to cross another border into Portugal and onto our final stop of the trip.

Day 5- La Manga to Granada

Yesterday, we left the coast behind and headed for the mountains of the Sierra Nevada.

Inspired by the book Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart (former Genesis drummer) and his amusing tale of setting up home in La Alpujarra, I suggested to Mike we should take a detour via Orgiva to visit one of the villages I had so enjoyed reading about.

Following the signs for parking, we took a turn down a street that started off accessible enough but became narrower and narrower until we reached the point where we could go no further with not even space for a gnat to pass by either side. After drawing quite a crowd we concluded the only way out was backwards returning back down the several hundred yards with mere cms either side in reverse. Sadly this meant that every other car behind us had to the same 😳. I did think about trying to get a photo for the ‘gram but I thought perhaps it wasn’t the time! Anyway, we felt we’d probably outstayed our time in Orgiva so will just have to rely on Chris Stewart’s narrative!

The Moorish city of Granada sits below the Sierra Nevada ski area but there was not a speck of snow to be seen yesterday as temperatures hit 40c.

Granada is built on a hill so our walk up beyond the rooftops to get a bird’s eye view of the Alhambra was our 2nd very sweaty moment of the day! 🥵

We hadn’t bought tickets for the Alhambra as it had been tricky to plan arrival times, but we spent a few happy hours wandering through the higgledy-piggledy medieval alleyways of the Albaicin quarter and the Alcaiceria region which transports you to the souks of Marrakesh with its colorful shops selling ceramics, leather goods and beautiful silk skirts. Arabic tea houses beckon you in offering cool respite and delicious sweet treats. And of course the city is famed for its fabulous tapas and we made sure to check out their finest jamon bellota (several times). Granada has been our favourite stop so far.

We’ve now clocked over 2000km and bid farewell to the Med. Today we head for our final Spanish stop in Cordoba before we cross the border to Portugal.

Day 4 Fuentespalda to La Manga

Yesterday was our longest day on the road so far covering over 500km.

It was a day of huge diversity and made us appreciate the vastness of Spain and its many faces.

Our day started by climbing (in the car!) a single track road up to 1259m and then back down the other side of the mountain. I’m sure the view was amazing but I was too busy praying that no other car came in the opposite direction to look 😂.

And then we hit the road proper, travelling through the vast and empty plains with just the odd little ancient town and fort along the way.

Road trip tunes and the odd game of I spy and before we knew it we’d arrived in La Manga. I last came to La Manga when I was 16; perhaps I’m remembering it with rose coloured glasses but it’s no longer the La Manga of my dreams but rather a huge sprawl of hotels and bars along the length of the Mar Menor. It certainly felt a million miles away from our breakfast views yesterday morning.

La Manga Club is famed for its golf and tennis camps and Mike was keen to have a look at the golf. It’s well set up all manner of sports here and is also a great family hotel. It’s not set on the beach but the hotel does run a shuttle bus down to a pretty little bay where they have a beach restaurant.

It was interesting to revisit La Manga after all these years, but I think our preference is for more authentic Spain. But Mike preferred the driveway to this hotel 😂.

Today we head into our beloved Andalusia and Granada in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Where has your favourite place been so far?

Day 3 Torrent to Fuentespalda

You may (like me before this trip) have never heard of either our starting or finishing point for yesterday’s journey and be wondering how we planned our route! We obviously had a beginning and end and there were some definite points along the way that we wanted to see, but then it was a case of breaking up the rest into manageable drives and trying to find some secret Spain along the way. We completely hit the brief yesterday and our bed for the night was in the middle of nowhere!

We set off from Torrent interested to see some of the Costa Brava. In my mind I had associated this area with over populated high rise tourist spots and whilst there was a little of this along the way I was surprised to find stunning hidden bays and pretty villages with the winding mountain roads offering breathtaking views across the sparkling waters of the Med.

Taking the motorway skirting past Barcelona we encountered a different kind of ‘excitement’ as overhead signs warned of ‘car robberies’ and ‘flat tyres- do not trust strangers’. Fortunately we had be warned of this notorious hotspot and made sure we did not need loo breaks till the risk of encountering the Barcelona Bad Boys was long behind!

As we travelled further inland the landscape gradually transformed. The coastal road gave way to the rolling hills and fertile plains of inland Catalonia where all we could see for miles were mountains, ancient olive groves and vineyards dotting the roadside (and thankfully a garage with a loo 😂).

Our final 5.5km of the day was down an unmade track and Mike has just about forgiven me for his ‘undercarriage’ as it was worth every little bump to spend the night overlooking hills and olive groves with only the crickets for company - we found our ‘secret Spain’ here and it was bliss.

Today is our longest drive - 500km to La Manga and over half way to Vale do Lobo.

Thanks for your company along the trip. I hope we’re inspiring to take a road trip of your own or find a little of secret Spain - and obviously I’d love to help!

Day 2 - Aix en Provence to Torrent (near Girona)

Yesterday we set off from our beautiful Provençal hotel in search of the wider Provence.

As part of our ‘homework’ for the trip we’d been watching Marcus Wareing’s Simply Provence so we set off in search of the town where he filmed the show, Saint Remy de Provence. I’m so pleased we took the detour. It was everything I imagined Provence would be, colourful shuttered buildings, winding alleyways filled with beautiful boutiques and shops selling everything Provence is famed for - wine, olive oil, honey, cheese, truffles and the delightful scent of lavender filled the streets. The restaurants here looked fabulous but sadly no time to try them out as we needed to head off to Spain.

Passing in the shadow of the Pyrenees with the coast in and out of sight and spying hilltop villages along the way made the motorway drive pretty interesting.

Crossing over the border into Spain, the landscape began to slowly change as fruit trees replaced vineyards and we were blessed with field after field of sunflowers until arriving at our next stop of Torrent.

Torrent is a tiny town and our hotel was set in the midst of rolling hillsides and made a beautiful stay for our 2nd evening.

Today we continue on through Spain as we drive 350km to Fuentespalda mid-way between Barcelona and Valencia.

Yesterday we completed our first day on the road, covering 284km of our 2400 km trip.

A very early start from City Airport to Nice had us arriving in France before the croissants were out of the oven. We collected Mike’s car from the poshest car park I’ve ever seen, where It’s been living its best life since he dropped it off in May and where it’s been hanging out with ferraris and lambos - this is the South of France after all!

We hit the road to the coast for a lunch stop at the charming Chateau Leoube owned by the Bamford family (of JCB fame) who also clearly know how to turn their hand to wine and the finest olive oil. It’s set back from a beautiful bay where holidaymakers were finding respite from the 38c heat in the cooling waters. No time for a dip for us though as we headed straight off for our first stay of the trip in the pretty town of Aix en Provence.

I’ve wanted to visit Provence since reading Peter Mayle’s wonderful books about food and friendship in the region. I’m happy to say we found both here (I’m going to be dreaming about the juiciest of tomatoes for a long time) as well as beautiful scenery of fields of vines alongside the quaint old towns. Sadly we’re a little too late for the lavender which gets cut back in July. No matter - we’ll just have to come back.

Alas, it’s not a year but just a day in Provence for us. Next stop Espana.

Hope you’re enjoying the ride so far.

Tomorrow we set off on another epic road trip 🚗

For those of you that have been following me for a while you may remember that two years ago Mike and I took a week to drive from our home in Nottingham down to the Algarve. It was such a success that we decided to do it again! This time we are taking a slightly different route. Mike drove the car to Nice last month, so we are picking it up from there and then driving 2300km through France and Spain and (hopefully!) arriving at The Algarve next Saturday.

We'll be taking in new towns and regions that have long been on my 'to do' list including Provence, the Costa Calida region of Spain and the beautiful Pueblo Blanco of Cordoba. We'll also revisit the stunning city of Granada (for a bit of Jamon) and will be saying hello to La Manga once more where I last visited when I was just 16 (I wonder if my young Spanish waiter will still be there 😜).

Give me a follow if you want to come along for the ride.

Last week we took our first cruise onboard the brand new Explora I.
We sailed out of Venice and travelled along the Adriatic taking in ports in Italy, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro and we sad our farewell to the ship in Athens as she sailed off for a week around the Greek Isles.

The smaller size of the ship (maximum capacity 900 guests) meant that we were able to visit destinations that we haven’t experienced on the bigger ships with our favourites being the mountainous splendour of Kotor and the day we woke in the middle of the Ionian Sea and took the tender boat to explore Lefkada.

Explora Journeys is a new cruise line, owned by a stalwart in the cruise industry – MSC. The Explora ships are a world away from the gargantuan (but fabulously fun) MSC ships and their vibe is designed around that of a luxury yacht. The all-suites ship includes all drinks, tips, Wi-Fi and dining as well as entry to fabulous spa and gym.

We loved the laid-back luxury of Explora I which felt more akin to a 5* hotel. There are 3 pools, including an infinity pool overlooking the back of the ship, as well as numerous hot tubs, A host of bars are dotted in and out with champagne on tap (perfect for sail-aways). Specialty dining is included and the Market Emporium (their buffet dining) is incredible with infinite food stations including fresh sushi (divine!), pizza oven, fresh pasta, mozzarella station (my favourite!), lobster and oysters – the list of deliciousness goes on! Afternoon tea is served every day and specialty coffee all day long.

There’s a more relaxed style of entertainment with live music dotted around the ship and a daily show in their theatre, but they also offer destination talks and fun quizzes too. Although there are no waterslides or the like on the ship there is a kids and teens club on board and there were quite a few kids on our ship. The size of the ship makes it easier to make friends and not get lost!

There are so many outside spaces that sunbed wars is not a thing – even on sea days we had our choice of pools and beds and the attention to detail and service from the crew was off the charts.

Give me a call if you want to find out more.

I wanted to share this gorgeous find that I have just quoted for a family for October half term. They wanted to visit Marrakech but were looking for something a little out of town so they could experience the hustle and bustle of the Medina but then escape for a little bit of downtime.

Villa Fawakay is an absolute gem. It's just 10km from the city for easy access, but could be a world away. It's owned by a British couple who upped sticks from London and set about a major restoration project and now live on site with their kids and resident donkey, Norman!

The complex is a lovely tangle of villas set amongst rose gardens and open green spaces. Fabulous fresh food can be served in your villa or by the main pool and a rooftop terrace offers views over to the Atlas Mountains.

There are five sand coloured houses and three eco villa suites - the entire complex sleeps no more than 30.

Kids are well looked after here too, with fresh and delicious kids meals on the menu and also a chance to join a cookery class. For the very small kids all manner of amenities are available to save you having to pack them.

With a TripAdvisor rating of 5/5 this resort is guaranteed to offer all the trappings of a sensational city and R&R combo.

04/07/2024

A year ago my client came to me to say that he and his wife wanted to take their grown up kids on a safari. Safaris come in all shapes and sizes but this client had said that key for them was to be as close to nature and the wildlife as possible. They were looking for a fully immersive experience away from the masses (of people not Wildebeest!)

I immediately knew which of our many safari providers was going to be the best fit for this family. Tent with a View is a Tanzanian safari company and a fabulous partner of Travel Counsellors. They have been operating for the last 30 years working alongside and supporting the local communities. Their tours are tailored to fit around each guest and every trip I have planned with them has been slightly different, but each one has included this company’s unique offering of the Bush Rover Migration Camp. The problem with catching the Great Migration is that is moves – obviously, and so static camps can only ever give you a close glimpse of this amazing phenomenon at certain times of the year. Not so with these guys who have 3 private sites in the Serengeti. They offer a unique and innovative safari camp whereby 6 Land Rover Defenders are set up as beautiful 2 storey lodges with a tented bedroom sitting above the Land Rover. Below deck there is a flush loo, shower unit and even a teak clad bath in the boot! The crown jewel must surely be the upper balcony where you can sit, G&T in hand, and watch in wonder at the fabulous wildlife passing by. Once the Migration moves onwards then so do the Bush Rovers – leaving nothing behind but memories.

The Bush Rover is only part of the safari itinerary as you pass through the Serengeti with each lodge having its own unique offering. If you want to end up at the beach you can conclude on the exotic spice island of Zanzibar or, as my client did, head to Saadani where bush meets beach.

Thanks to my lovely client for sharing photos of their amazing trip. I think I can safely say that their main requirement of getting as close to nature was well and truly nailed!

If this has piqued your interest and a safari is on your bucket list give me a call so I can find the perfect trip for you.

I genuinely don't like to shout about myself too much, but yesterday I worked tirelessly all day to demonstrate what clients really get when they book with Travel Counsellors.

I had a client embarking on a long planned family safari holiday to Tanzania. I had a text from the client to confirm that they had boarded and flight was scheduled to depart on time. I breathed a sigh of relief and continued to enjoy my birthday night away. Sadly, when I awoke at 6.30am I saw that I had an e-mail from our Duty Office to say that there had been a subsequent flight problem which delayed them almost 3 hours and meant they would miss their next connecting flight.

As soon as I knew the client had landed I called them to let them know that I was dealing with it and would get back to them with a plan asap. The airline was going to put them on the only available flight that day - but it was to Kenya – which was not where their safari was! This meant that they would miss their onward safari flight and the next one wasn't for another 3 days. Working alongside our brilliant Duty Office and our fabulous local safari team we looked at all manner of options until we found the best solution that meant they would not miss a single day of the safari.

Whilst the client was able to leave the chaos of the transfer desk behind and get some lunch, we were booking brand new flights and arranging a day room at a hotel before they took their safari flight so at least they had chance to shower and have a power nap. Had they not booked their holiday as a Travel Counsellor Package the new arrangements (4 new flights, transfers and a hotel room) would have cost them a significant amount of extra money, not to mention hours trying to navigate their way through airlines and then the safari arrangements.

Knowing that I am at the end of the phone, knowing that I genuinely care about my clients' holidays and knowing that when the 💩 hits the fan I and my amazing TC support team are here for them is why I have so many happy repeat clients.

Here's the photo they sent me as they left Zanzibar!

This weekend I’ve been looking for last minute availability for 3 bedroom villas within walking distance of bars and restaurants. There are still a few gems out there so give me a call if you’re still looking.

This is one of my favourite finds in the beautiful little fishing village of Agios Stefanos. Lining a horseshoe-shaped bay facing the Albanian mountains, it is a scattering of houses, a succession of tavernas, and a series of jetties, all set in a wooded amphitheatre dotted with elegant villas and cypress trees. Crystal clear water bays neighbour the village and you can take out boats to explore further afield.

This 3 bed villa is all about the view, blissfully located overlooking the sea. An expansive terrace wraps around the outside of the villa, and beside the pool with loungers and soft seating, there’s a shaded dining terrace and a built-in BBQ for eating al fresco, plus table tennis and an outdoor pool.

This 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom villa has been reduced to £6k for the villa only for 7 nights arriving on 5th August. I can add flights and car hire too.

If you’re still looking for a summer holiday give me a call - it’s still not too late!

Without wanting to fast forward time through ‘summer’ new additional direct flights to Lapland make this magical place easier to get to.

Although Santa is a big draw for many families, the area has so much more to offer for older kids or adults who love adventuring in the great outdoors and have always dreamt of being pulled along through the snowy trees by reindeer.

We loved our family trip at Feb HT and even managed to fit in skiing too and also made a visit to see the big man and got our order in early!

Earlier this week I made a 12 hour round trip so that I could take a look around a ship that I have had my eye on for a long time.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offer 6 star ultra-all inclusive luxury. And, despite the slightly less salubrious surrounds of Tyne Port on a blustery day, there was no denying what fabulous ships Regent Seven Seas offer.

I took a look around Seven Seas Splendor. With just 373 suites and a ratio of 548 crew to a maximum of 746 guests, it is obvious that exemplary service is top of the agenda.

The experience includes fabulous dining options (all restaurants are included), hand crafted cocktails made just the way you like them, shore excursions, West End productions each night, flights and transfers AND complimentary laundry (come home with a suitcase full of freshly laundered clothes!!).

Although, certainly not a budget product with all these inclusions Regent Seven Seas do offer excellent value for money and may well be worth considering as an alternative to a 5* land holiday.

Take a look for yourself, I can see why they called her Splendor!

Look at this amazing offer from our friends at Virgin Voyages.

I absolutely loved my mini cruise onboard Valiant Lady from Barcelona to Palma last year. Adults only, chilled out vibe with no main dining room concept - it’s more of a city break at sea - with a chance to visit several cities in one week.
