Notice of closure of our social media sites. Following a strategic review, Uniper announced in October 2021 plans to fundamentally restructure its Engineering function, including the Engineering Academy, which will close on Friday, 1st July 2022.

Over the years, we have delivered hundreds of courses which have contributed to the technical and safety training of the power and engineering sectors. We have enjoyed watching hundreds of individuals develop into highly skilled experts that support essential national infrastructure. We are all very proud of what we have achieved over the years and are grateful to all of our customers and learners for working with us and supporting our mission to train the engineers of the future.

This week students across the UK received record results in their A level’s and GCSE’s. We are delighted to announce we have just received the results for our 2019 cohort of and they have also all achieved fantastic grades! We are extremely proud that they have completed the with either Distinction or Merit as their final grade – over 90% reaching Distinction. A massive well done to the apprentices! All of their hard work has paid off and that’s another stepping stone in their programme finished. The 18th Edition wiring regulations is the latest standard in installations which came into effect in January 2019 and essential for professionals that are working in the electrical . One of which the Certification Scheme where cards for registered electricians are renewed every three years and without this certificate are unable to keep registered electrician status! On Monday we welcomed our 2020 cohort to the Engineering Academy for the first time to start their practical training! Even in these unusual times with our COVID secure measures in place, it’s exciting to have apprentices back on site and see the Academy return to a bit of normality. Their apprenticeship programme started in mid-October and over the last 5 months have been completing a series of online modules towards their BTEC qualification and a mini project set by one of the Academy trainers. The apprentices have been incredibly patient during the pandemic but have always expressed how keen they are to get into the workshops and start their hands on training. It’s been great to meet them in person and see how engaged they are with their learning. We’re looking forward to seeing them progress through their training programme and starting to welcome our 2019 cohort back from April 19th.

It’s International Women’s Day and to mark the occasion we caught up with one of our inspirational Control and Instrumentation apprentice alumni, Lauren Husband to see how she is getting on a few years after she completed her apprenticeship. This is what she had to say:

‘I completed my apprenticeship in September 2017 and since then I have been working in the Drax maintenance department honing my instrumentation skills. I have had opportunities to work in several areas of the Power Station which has enabled me to become a confident and experienced craftsperson. I am now able to use my skills to maintain plant covering a wide range of instrumentation including gas/water/dust analysis, measurement of pressure/level/flow and electrical fault finding’.
It's great to hear that Lauren is using the skills she learnt from her apprenticeship on site and is gaining a varied range of experience. Thank you for catching up with us Lauren!

One that is less familiar and fairly unique to the Engineering Academy is the operator apprenticeship, that provides flexibility within the scheme so that it can be tailored to the apprentices type of power plant. Today is the final day of National Apprenticeship Week 2021 and to celebrate Graduation day we have created a video of our apprentices talking about the support they receive whilst on programme! Following the recent Government announcement to move to a National Lockdown, we will be restricting face-to-face training at the Academy to only critical worker courses to support our customers with the delivery of essential services. As a result we will be postponing the majority of face to face training held at the Engineering Academy until the 1st March 2021.
