Boots & Brambles Forest School

Boots & Brambles Forest School Boots & Brambles Forest School is a unique Forest School held in various woodlands in south Notts. Come along in all weathers to explore and enjoy nature.

Boots & Brambles Forest School runs a range of Forest School sessions for all ages. In 2021 we launched our unique Antenatal classes held in our beautiful woodland. We also run our weekly Baby Brambles sessions designed specifically for under 2.5s as well as our popular Forest School sessions which have been running for 7 years now and are open to all ages! We run Family Sessions throughout all sc

hool holidays as well as our Full Day Sessions for children aged 7 and over and run unique, tailor made outdoor parties. Our weekly School Intervention sessions support children who are struggling in mainstream school and we are also able to offer sessions for preschools, schools and youth groups. All sessions are led by an experienced Forest Schools-trained practitioner. Our sessions let children explore nature, with the emphasis on child-led play and letting them get their hands dirty! (muddy feet are compulsory!)
Each week we have a different seasonal theme and a range of activities available such as our slackline, mud kitchen and water wall. We provide opportunities for the children (and adults) to explore the environment in a variety of ways. The group will run whatever the weather - there will be tea, snacks and a good natter provided come rain, shine, sleet or snow! 💚🌳 A HUGE thank you to everyone who has attended and supported our Into the Woods with Zephyr’s Family Sessions this year! 🌳💚

💚🌳We've been running our monthly, fully funded Into the Woods with Zephyr’s Family Forest School Sessions for two years now in collaboration with the amazing charity Zephyr's and are pleased to announce that these will be continuing in 2025 - please visit our website to book your free place.

🌳💚 These woodland activities are for bereaved family members of all ages; for children whose brother or sister has died, some who knew their sibling well, others who may have been born after the loss in the family, or may not yet know...

These sessions are for others too; cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends - with chance to come along and be together outside in a space where there's no pressure to talk, but where everyone there has been through or is going through a similar situation.

There are books and grief resources available, there's always someone from Zephyr’s there to chat to or share how you're doing and you can find out about our other services too.💚🌳

🌳💚You can come along as and when you're able, or every time, it's up to you. There's always something new to do as well as the familiar toys and our woods to explore too.

Free to attend for anyone bereaved through pregnancy loss or the death of a baby or child 💚🌳

💚 "I always think that Christmas is a bit like an emotional magnifying glass” Last weekend we watched "That Christmas" an awesome new Xmas film which I'd definitely recommend and is the original of this quote.💚

💚 These words refer to the idea that this time of year intensifies emotions; if you are happy, Christmas can make you happier, but conversely if you feel alone or unloved, Christmas can magnify these feelings.💚

❤️ There's so much focus on Xmas as a time for joy and happiness, but for many people these don't go hand in hand. For varied reasons, the festive time can be a challenging one for many. If you have family members who you are estranged from, who are unwell or who are no longer with you, this can be magnified at this time of year. ❤️

As we decorated our house last week, I wrote these few words...

"There's no starker reminder, you're no longer alive.
Where there should be six stockings, I now hang only five.
As we gather together to decorate the tree,
I should have four helpers, but now only three.
As the world around is full of festive cheer, I see endless reminders that you're no longer here."

We've been so lucky in recent years to find both support and friendship through the amazing local charities ’s and who both offer support to families after the loss of a baby or child.

🎄🦌 We had lots of fun making Jingle Bell Sticks, Reindeer food, mixing up a festive feast in the mud kitchen, creating our own hot chocolates and toasting marshmallows on the campfire!

♻️ We are keen to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we can here at Boots & Brambles Forest School and visit our local scrapstore almost weekly! The scrapstore is run by lovely volunteers who bend over backwards to help with both fantastic resources and activity ideas!🌳

🌳🍄Wow Millside Spencer Academy, what can I say! 🍄🌳 Today was our final day running sessions at Millside Spencer Academy and we've had an absolute blast!

🏫 We started back in September 2022 when the school had just opened and was running in the "Learning Village" and at that time we had the whole school out in the woods each week in all weather!

Each week we watched as the school grew and developed in front of our eyes, both in terms of the number of children attending and the building itself! 🏫

🌞 🌧❄️ Each week, come rain, shine, sun or snow, the children and staff at Millside have been out in the woods embracing all that the weather has to offer!

🌳🍄It's been an absolute privilege to work at Millside over the last two years. A HUGE thank you to Mrs Thorne, all the staff, pupils and parents!

🌳🍁I can't believe how the woods have developed over the last few years, it seems like yesterday that Mrs Thorne and I peered through the fence, looking at the woods, talking about Forest School sessions! When we started in September 2022 we had a stack of orange buckets and some trees! Now thanks to lots of hard work from the school there's a mud kitchen, shelter, water walls, seating, tables and a whole host of amazing resources! 🌳

💚Will we miss our Millside Tuesdays, but we are beyond pleased to hand the baton over to Mrs Clift and we are looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Millside Forest School!💚

💚🌳This was my "glimmer" today! 💚🌳
Glimmers are small, bright, positive moments that inspire a sense of joy or happiness and have the power to uplift your spirits! 💚🌳

🌳💚 After a tough couple of weeks weather-wise, it was SO welcome! 💚🌳

💚🌳 This morning was our Parent & Child Forest School session, despite the forecast promising a drier day than we've had, in reality it was wet, cold, windy and muddy! 👣

🌳💚 I've been in this business long enough to know that we'd have lower numbers than ususal today; the day after a weekend of heavy storms, rain and wind and the busiest month of the year on the run up to Xmas.

💚🌳 In reality, we didn't know what we'd find when we got to site this morning, would we be able to run, would there be much storm damage?!

🌳🍄Luckily our site was OK, our remaining tarps intact and so we set up, in the rain and wind, ready to run!

🌳🍄 Yes we were quieter than usual, yes it was wet, muddy and cold, but we had families, we had fun and we had laughter in the woods! 🍄🌳

🌳🍄On quieter sessions, it often gives families more chance to chat and build relationships and it was so lovely to hear parents saying "I'm so glad we'd booked on to come today, it's made us come out of the house!" "After this we'll go home, have lunch and snuggle up in the warm this afternoon!" 🍄🌳

🌬🍡It was still too windy to have a fire today, but we still had marshmallows and mince pies and I managed to catch this "glimmer" on my phone - one of our little Boots & Bramblers practicing toasting her marshmallow without the fire! 🔥 Made my day!

💚A huge shout out of solidarity to my fellow Forest School Leaders, Outdoor Practitioners & anyone working outdoors at the moment 💚

Working outdoors at this time of year is tough; it's is colder, wetter, muddier, more physically demanding and let's face it, harder work! 👣 Motivating others to play and explore outdoors in these months can also be challenging, especially when the weather is very wet or cold.

When you work outdoors, you are at the behest of Mother Nature and whatever she chooses to throw at us!! In recent weeks we've had mild days, a LOT of rain, snow - resulting in broken tarps - minus temperatures, ice, wind and sun - you name it! As outdoor practitioners we do our very best to run all year round in all weather, but the truth is, Mother Nature calls the shots! 🌧❄️

🌬🌧This weekend we face the arrival of Storm Darragh with predicted wind gusts of over 50mph and heavy rain. Like many other small businesses and outdoor practitioners, we had outdoor Festive Events arranged for this weekend; events which have been months in the planning and preparation, for which resources have been made and purchased, but with forecasts such as these, we've been left with no other option than to cancel for health and safety concerns 🌧🌬

🌧 I've seen SO many local events from drone shows, to light nights, to local festivals and markets, all forced to cancel due to the impending storm. We know full well, as a small business, how hard incidents like this can hit, especially at this time of year, when seasonal items will have been made all ready for the events and rescheduling at such a busy time may not be feasible. Sending out a huge shout of solidarity to all of those affected this weekend💚

I'll be over here, eating my body weight in mince pies and festive hot chocolates we had ready for this weekend, waiting for the calm after the storm! 💚

At Xmas we are led to believe that we must create "magical memories" and the "perfect childhood" which more often than not centres around big displays of affection such as extravagant days out, Xmas Eve Boxes, piles of presents, or a magic elf appearing on 1st December in a huge balloon with your name on! I'm not saying people can't celebrate how they want, but it's also OK NOT to have an elf, a Xmas Eve Box and matching Xmas clothes. To make things magical we shouldn't have to spend a fortune; magic should be in the little things; let's normalise a simple, but no less special Xmas time

🎃Celebrations, sustainability & STUFF🎃 🎃🦇We LOVE to celebrate seasonal festivals here @boots_and_brambles. But each year it seems that celebrations become bigger and more commercial, often bringing increased cost and more - usually plastic - "stuff!" As Forest School Practitioners and parents, we are passionate about the natural world and very conscious about the impact we humans have upon it. Everywhere children go nowadays they come back with "stuff" whether that be from a party bag, a lunch out, or a day trip. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has drawers full of plastic tat that seem to just seem to appear! It can be so hard, in today's modern, fast paced society, when we are all SO busy and working hard to take time to stop and look at the impact we are having. 🎃This year we've tried hard to focus on making our celebrations, both at home and at work, simple and sustainable (with less "stuff!") 🌳 May 1st was traditionally the first day of the year that children were allowed to go barefoot! We celebrated May Day today @boots_and_brambles with our annual Barefoot Walk! 🌳👣 🌳The children built the walk over the course of the day using different woodland textures🌳 👣"I'm not putting my feet in that" "I don't want dirty feet" were the cries we heard from some! 👣🌳 But by the end of the day nearly all the children had a go, some started off in wellies, then went in their socks, then barefoot ... ending up with the "Ultimate Barefoot Walk Challenge" completing the course barefoot and blindfolded! 👣 With many children returning again and again, testing out the course from start to finish and in reverse.
