Well what a day! We have been into Rio"s Favela district and met one of the most impressive young ladies I have ever met Isis. Her father was a drug dealer and her mother was in Jail. She was brought up by an illiterate grandmother in the area.
She learnt to play drums on pots and pans, until she was donated a set of drums from a traveller. She played in the street and local kids kept coming up to her asking her to teach them, no she said. In the end she had to because so many kids kept coming to her.
They were moved on time and time again. She kept going. Now on her 20's she was invited to go to France with the kids on an exchange type program. The French kids came to Rio and vice versa. The kids only spoke their native tongue but still communicated through drumming. Whilst in France, she was invited to talk at the United Nation in Geneva. She knocked it out of the park. When she got back to Rio, she found out that the Favela had donated some drums. So she went to ask for them.
Now 29, she is now running a school for kids in the area who have had the same start in life. In the video you can see a 4 year old girl whose parents are in Jail. These kids have not had a good start but look at their faces, they are loving this. She is planning to take a group of them away in the next year, so Savvi Travel will be donating towards this trip. A wealthy traveller has donated $100,000 to enable them to buy and convert an actual house so the kids have somewhere to go to when they have home troubles.
