Came back in lovely evening sunshine and saw these two really close to Balvicar just round the corner from the pontoon! This male Osprey will soon be heading back to West Africa. The Sea Eagle is really living up to its Gaelic Name Iolaire sùil na grèine meaning the bird with the sunlit eye.

This is a really important petition, please take a moment to sign. Wrasse are very important in keeping rocky reefs healthy, without them predating on urchins the urchins flourish and you end up with barren areas. This is an unintended but devastating consequence of fishing for wrasse. Wrasse are slow growing and do not reproduce in huge numbers, once they are gone from an area they will not repopulate very quickly. Please sign.

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to develop and introduce a statutory Fisheries Management Plan focussed on protecting wild wrasse stocks in Scottish waters, beginning with a data-collection exercise and introduction of precautionary fishery management measures ahea...

We have been seeing Minke whales on quite a lot of our trips recently. Here is one that we think is quite young and perhaps a larger one coming up in the middle of a baitball. Its always incredible to see these very rare cetaceans close to the boat!

Our guests were thrilled to see this spring & summer visitor yesterday. Did you know that Ospreys can reverse their outer toe. Usually, they have three pointing forward and one back when sitting in a tree, but, when they grab a slippery fit, they can hold onto it with two toes pointing forward and two back!!

It's growing up time all around us now! Here are two Sea Eagle sibling chicks just hanging out together having recently fledged! They are still getting food brought to them by their parents but soon we will see them being taught how to hunt for themselves. Pic taken with 600mm lens and heavily cropped so that we don't cause disturbance.

Pups, pups, pups! Common Seal pups are starting to arrive! Did you know that common seal pups shed their downy coat in the womb so that they are all ready to go swimming pretty soon after they are born. They will stay with their mothers for a few weeks, feeding on very rich milk (dribbly one in the pic) and learning to fish!

Look who we came across today.... summer visitors. Manx shearwaters have come all the way from South America to breed in burrows here on offshore islands. After breeding they will head back to South America.
And a wee puffin, they also nest in burrows. Did you know that the German name for puffin is Papageitaucher which translates as diving parrot!

We've had a few days off with David diving but now back to sharing this lovely area and wildlife with our guests.

Big commotion on one of the little islands made us take the boat closer. All the gulls which were resting on the island were up and harassing a Sea Eagle which must have been trying to catch a seabird on the island. The result was that the gulls chased off the Eagle which left empty taloned, it then flew really close to the boat. Great sight for our guests.

Great to see terns back nesting and feeding! Did you know that terns made an unfortunate appearance in women's fashion in the late 19th century. Feathers and sometimes entire terns were mounted on women's hats! Fortunately this practice was outlawed and concern over the use of feathers of rare birds being used on hats was one of the driving forces behind the setting up of the RSPB!
