Look who we came across today.... summer visitors. Manx shearwaters have come all the way from South America to breed in burrows here on offshore islands. After breeding they will head back to South America.
And a wee puffin, they also nest in burrows. Did you know that the German name for puffin is Papageitaucher which translates as diving parrot!

We've had a few days off with David diving but now back to sharing this lovely area and wildlife with our guests.

Big commotion on one of the little islands made us take the boat closer. All the gulls which were resting on the island were up and harassing a Sea Eagle which must have been trying to catch a seabird on the island. The result was that the gulls chased off the Eagle which left empty taloned, it then flew really close to the boat. Great sight for our guests.

Great to see terns back nesting and feeding! Did you know that terns made an unfortunate appearance in women's fashion in the late 19th century. Feathers and sometimes entire terns were mounted on women's hats! Fortunately this practice was outlawed and concern over the use of feathers of rare birds being used on hats was one of the driving forces behind the setting up of the RSPB!

In the Corry yesterday and the gulls and gannets were showing us that the mackerel are back in! And with the feed will come all the other predators such as dolphins and whales, its going to be a great summer!

Very soon these incredibly cute common seal pups are going to make an appearance. Pupping time is nearly upon us! Did you know that common seal pups moult most of their fluffy coat in the womb which makes them ready to swim almost as soon as they are born! A very good safety feature. Amazing sequence of a Sea Eagle taking out and eating a gull. Nature very much in the raw! Pics taken by our wildlife guide Juliette on a trip last week. Just amazing predator, they are hunting a lot just now as they feed themselves and their hungry chicks.

We are seeing a few Gannets about now on our trips. These are our biggest seabird, they watch the sea from a great height and dive at speed to catch fish. Once they get into the water their eyes adapt to allow them to see well underwater.

A few divers (blackthroated) about just now... just coming into their amazing summer plumage. This was taken last year. Quite elusive but we have a good idea where to find them. They are usually migratory but there is a small breeding colony in Scotland. Did you know in North America these are called Arctic Loons and feature on Canadian coins...

We've got two types of seals in Scotland and we usually see them both on our trips! Sometimes they even hang out together; here is a grey seal at the front and a common (or harbour) seal behind!

Byebye and safe travels to the amazing Arctic Tern. These have nested for the first time in many years on Fladda but on Saturday they seemed to have gone apart from two or three. The species has an incredible migration, it can see two summers each year as it migrates along a route from its northern breeding grounds (for this one here on Fladda Island) to the Antarctic coast for the southern summer and back again about six months later. Recent studies have shown average annual round-trip lengths of about 70,900 km (44,100 mi) for birds nesting in Iceland and Greenland and about 48,700 km (30,300 mi) for birds nesting in the Netherlands, for birds nesting in Scotland this will be in-between! These are by far the longest migrations known in the animal kingdom.

Have had lots of incredible encounters with common dolphins over the past couple of weeks. this was from last week, around 50 fishing and playing. Gannets diving and fishing among them! Lots of activity but the dolphins still take time to come and check us out!

Amazing to see terns back nesting and breeding successfully on Fladda. American mink had destroyed the colony about 10 years ago and this is the first year we have seen them back.
