Small Islands on the West Coast…….

We are finally in June when the weather picks up, tourism is bustling, and the local sights are as beautiful as ever.

Known as the Gateway to the Isles we have so much to explore from castles, beaches, scenic islands, seafood and culture. We wanted to share some of our smaller local Islands to take a look at this summer.

1 – Staffa Island, located off the Isle of Mull is only ½ mile long and ¼ mile wide and known for its wonderful nature, beautiful views and the unique Fingal’s Cave. Fingal’s Cave is a large sea cavern featuring hexagonal rock columns which produce astonishing acoustics. During the spring and early summer, Staffas cliffs are a nesting ground of an abundance of different seabirds, most popular being the charming Puffin colonies. The island offers some stunning, panoramic views from its highest point allowing you to take in the breathtaking views of the Hebridean Islands.

2 - Isle of Iona, is a small Island situated off the Ross of Mull and is known for one of the oldest Christian religious centers in Western Europe the Iona Abbey. The Island only has a population of 170 permanent residents but attracts an astonishing 130,000 visitors every year. The lovely Aosdana Gallery sells artwork, Scottish jewelry and traditional Iona jewelry inspired by the rich Celtic culture. Iona Gallery houses a range of paintings of Iona dating as early as the 20th century. The gallery also sells pottery and hand-built ceramics. Fur such a small Island, there really is a lot to explore, not to forget its impressive panoramic sea views.

3 – Kerrera Island is only a short ferry ride from Oban Bay and is a great place for hiking and exploring. You can visit two small working farms on the Island, Ardentive Farm and Balliemore Farm both of which offer local produce from eggs, fruit, vegetables and meat. Kerrera Marina and Waypoint Bar & Grill are close to the Marina where the foot ferry takes you from the North Pier and offers superb food along with breathtaking views back over to the picturesque Oban Bay. To the south of the Island is Kerrera Tea Garden which provides homemade soups, rolls and baking, perfect after a long walk exploring.

4 – The Isle of Lismore is a 10 mile long Inner Hebridean Island near Oban, packed with walking trails, heritage and a varied history from 1000-year-old castles, a 19th century Lighthouse and ancient bronze aged cairns. You can visit The Lismore Gaelic Heritage Cantre which hosts a museum, library, shop and café. There are a lot of ways to explore the Island from Land Rover trips, Lismore Bike Hire and Seaweed Foraging.

5 – Easdale is located South of Oban and is accessed via a foot ferry from Ellenabeich. This original slate quarry Island offers unique outdoor swimming in flooded quarries making it a natural swimming pool. Don’t want to get those toes wet, these flooded quarries are a great place to fish from and with no license needed you can fish anywhere on the Island. Seafari Adventures offer wildlife and nature trips, where you can see whales, porpoises and sea birds. You can also do day tours to Staffa, Iona and the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. Every late September is the not too serious World Stone Skimming Championships attracting around 1000 people from near and far.

6 – Isle of Eriska is a small Island located at the entrance to Loch Creran and was originally privately owned by the Buchanan-Smiths from 1973 until August 2016, Eriska is now owned by Creation Gem, a family-owned business from Hong Kong. The Island has been measured at approximately 360 acres in total, within these grounds is the beautifully established Eriska House, built in 1884 and converted into a 5-star hotel. Open to both guests and the public, you can use the hotels facilities which include a swimming pool, spa, gym, tennis court and not forgetting its 5 star dining.
