Although only a few miles from the A38, this surfaced walk from Shipley Bridge to the dramatic Avon Dam Reservoir takes you out into open moorland and gives you a real taste of the south moor. It is a great route to explore if you fancy a gentle stroll or have young children, but do bear in mind that sections are quite exposed if the weather is bad.

Warm and muggy even at 6am yesterday so we’re sticking to riverside walks. Maisie and Rosie are beyond excited to be out on the moor again, with all their training firmly on board so I don’t need their leads to be on now lambing/nesting season is over. Maisie has proved to be a great help in teaching Rosie about avoiding cows and ponies, and ignoring sheep and lambs. The joy of being out on Dartmoor with well behaved young dogs is one I will never tire of 🤎💛

Dogs are welcome free at Higher Longford. Spacious, secure gardens, no restrictions on where they can go in the cottages, dog walk field, day kennel if you want to use it, freezer for raw feeders.
