Starting in February 2025, you will lead on training and supporting a team of local Citizen Researchers to design, conduct, and evaluate both qualitative and quantitative research, with support from our dedicated team. This detailed research will inform our next steps as we prepare to open as a visitor destination in 2026.

And sow it begins!👩‍🌾

We’re experimenting with a very early batch of aubergines to see if they germinate under heat lamps. If they grow, they will be transplanted to our Phase 1 Urban Farm in the spring and hopefully you can buy them at our summer produce sales.

Oldham has a unique micro-climate and lots of wet weather, and the more we try, the more we learn. All of our research will go into the 4-acre Phase 2 Urban Farm, a thriving space where we can grow even more veg for local people to enjoy.

Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, Northern Roots will deliver a new project that celebrates the natural, industrial and social heritage of the Northern Roots site and throws a spotlight on the centuries-old story of natural history study in Oldham.

Northern Roots is delighted to receive a grant of £249,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, Northern Roots will deliver a new project that celebrates the natural, industrial and social heritage of the Northern Roots site and throws a spotlight on the centuries-old story of natural history study in Oldham.

The project is inspired by Oldham’s 18th and 19th century working class scientific and environmental movements, the Oldham Microscopical Society, and individuals like James Nield (1825-1896), the son of an Oldham hatter who developed a passionate interest in the natural world.

An early advocate for nature conservation, Nield built on the existing botanical legacy in Oldham by being a founding member of the Oldham Microscopical Society (1864), a Society which still meets regularly today.

The project will generate jobs, commissions and training opportunities, empower local communities to shape, deliver and benefit from a range of activities and events, and will enable Northern Roots to prepare to open as a visitor destination in 2026, with local heritage and people at its heart.

Our Natural Health Service currently provides services for Hill Top Surgery, Turning Point Rochdale & Oldham and Get Oldham Working and is changing lives in #Oldham. Participants report feeling less isolated and less negative emotions. They have developed stronger connections to nature and their local community, their physical mobility has improved, and GP visits have reduced. Prescribing nature and connection. In 2023 we partnered with Hill Top Surgery which serves a community living right on the doorstep of the Northern Roots site in #Oldham. We’ve been working with Dr Clare Reeder, who has been referring patients from Hill Top Surgery to our Natural Health Service programme. Introducing the Natural Health Service at Northern Roots. Our Natural Health Service is a nature-based social prescribing programme designed to support local people with their mental and physical health and wellbeing. Launched in summer 2023, the Natural Health Service is led by Steph Wild. While recovering from a serious health challenge during the pandemic, Steph harnessed nature to help her heal. Steph brings her compassion and expertise to the Natural Health Service and has created a programme that is changing the lives of local people. Steph leverages the power of nature to uplift spirits, encourage self-belief and inspire participants to take care of themselves, each other and the planet.
