The Ancient City of Pingyao, China 🐉🏯

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pingyao is a tiny ancient city, often overlooked by travellers. Its superbly-preserved architecture and city walls, elegant courtyards and ancient temples, the vibrancy created by the 30,000 people residing within its walls, along with the absence of cars within the city walls, transports you to a bygone era. Exploring this hidden-gem is a true highlight on our 23-day Very Best of China tour. 🥢🥠

The city was at its peak during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and, incredibly, has managed to keep its imposing town walls and watchtowers largely intact. During our stay we include visits to its fine temples, government buildings and the Rishengchang Financial House Museum, which began life as a humble dye shop before transforming into China’s first bank and pioneering the use of paper cheques as a form of payment. With a visitor pass allowing free entry to many more of Pingyao’s delights, any free time could be easily spent further exploring the town.

Our hotel for two wonderful nights is the Yun Jin Cheng Mansion, a charming boutique hotel in the centre of Pingyao, whose courtyards and rooms have been lovingly decorated to reflect the history of its surroundings.

Did you know?💡 Pingyao was called Ancient Tao before the dynasties of Qin (221–206 BC) and Han (206 BC–220 AD). In early Northern Wei Dynasty, Ping Tao was renamed as Pingyao to avoid the pronunciation of Tao, because the temporal Emperor was named as Tuoba Tao. According to ancient rules, name of emperor, high official, head of a family, or elder of a clan was regarded as taboo by his subjects or juniors.

🇯🇵 Our Reservations Consultant Ellie, and Operations Executive Nicole, have recently returned from our Very Best of Japan tour. One of the world’s most popular touring destinations, Japan is known for its vibrant culture, intriguing landscapes and timeless traditions.

From the kimono-clad geisha who grace Kyoto’s streets, to Tokyo’s modern neon-lit metropolis, what makes Japan so unique is its ability to hold on to age-old customs and timeless traditions, yet entwine them seamlessly into modern-day living.

Our leisurely 20-day tour has been carefully crafted to blend this fascinating mix of ancient and modern along with the country’s major attractions. Add to this the beauty of the Japanese Alps, picturesque gardens, ancient castles and unique Japanese experiences, this tour combines the very best this country has to offer. 🗻⛩️

Ellie says🗣️ “Visiting Mount Fuji was a highlight of my trip; its serene environment provided the perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection. I also loved Tokyo’s vibrant energy, which offered a stark contrast to the tranquillity experienced elsewhere. Tokyo seemed to have endless sights and activities, from bustling markets to cosy bars, with something new and exciting around every corner. We also attended a talk by a survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, which left a lasting impression on me. Hearing firsthand about the survivors' experiences and resilience was incredibly moving. The unique, calming atmosphere of Hiroshima is something I will always remember.”

Due to demand we’ve released two brand new dates for 2025. These departures are filling up fast, so book now to avoid disappointment.

Giant Pandas, China 🐼🎋

On day 11 of our Very Best of China tour, we visit the fascinating Giant Panda Breeding Research Institute in Chengdu, a true ✨Tour Highlight✨ which is home to around 120 giant and 76 red pandas.

The panda is the national symbol of China, and with over 80% of the world’s Giant Panda population found in Sichuan Province, it’s little surprise to find the area taking the lead in conservation projects to save these endangered species. The project allows us to see these loveable and rare creatures, at close quarters in a near-natural habitat setting.

Did you know? Baby pandas are born pink and measure about 15cm – that’s about the size of a pencil! ✏️💞

Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on 18th July, Nelson Mandela’s birthday, to honour his life and legacy 🎊🇿🇦

Born in 1918, Nelson Mandela helped change the lives of millions of South African people. His activism in striving for equal rights made him unpopular with the authorities, and as such he spent an unbelievable 27 years behind bars.

In 1990 he was freed by the president of South Africa at the time, FW de Klerk, and the following year became President of the African National Congress (ANC). Mandela worked with de Klerk to bring an end to apartheid harmoniously and introduced equal rights for everyone. Their work towards making South Africa a more peaceful place won the pair the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and the following year, all races in South Africa were allowed to vote in the general election. The ANC won, and Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president.

During our Very Best of South Africa & Spectacular South Africa tours, you have the opportunity to visit Soweto, a township famed for being home to Nelson Mandela, rich in political history and a vibrant trend-setting culture. You also have the option to take a boat to Robben Island, near Cape Town, where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years.

Now a museum and World Heritage Site, Robben Island pays its respects to Nelson Mandela and many others who paid for the freedom of democracy. It is often described as ‘the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, suffering and injustice’.
