Afternoon swim and snorkel at yet another beautiful beach !
Today started with a huge thunderstorm with violet thunder and lightening and a lot of rain, but this afternoon we got a gap and went to the Leon levy Native Plant reserve which has 30 acres of wetland and native coppice trails. It has been beautifully done and well worth a visit … watch out for spiders and snakes !
I had the privilege of visiting the most beautiful boutique hotel today which has a fascinating history. I was lucky enough to be shown around by Hans who has been instrumental in seeing his vision turn into reality and has created a truly authentic Bahamian hotel in keeping with the original homely charm, with an incredible eye for detail and individuality. The Potlatch Club began its life as a two-bedroom home constructed in 1923 to house people on a pineapple plantation, with other structures built between 1947 and 1965. In the 1950s, after the property was purchased by socialites Diana Adams, Elizabeth Fitzgerald and Marie Driggs, it became a private hideaway for celebrities like Raymond Burr, Greta Garbo, and Paul McCartney. This version of the resort came to a halt in the 1980s, and the unkempt buildings were soon overtaken by overgrowth that was cut away by Febles as he began work on landscaping with his team. Definitely worth a visit , the best time on the island being late October or March through to April. We are here at the worst time , hurricane season and most things are closed but we have still had the most incredible time with warm temperatures , electric tropical thunderstorms and warm friendly people .
Today was a very special day exploring savannah sound by boat, thank you to our guide Julius from fishbone tours, who besides being loads of fun, showed us the most incredible things and taught us so much about the ecosystem of mangroves to the importance of putting a starfish back safely in its natural environment without harming it. No feeding of the turtles and utmost care and respect for all , it was an amazing afternoon of snorkelling and exploring !
Today we went on a real adventure trying to find a good snorkelling spot!! One of the things I have learnt in my years of travel is that some days you discover real treasures and secret spots and other days you don’t! This was one of those days … most of the dead end tracks ended in disappointment and plastic waste which is so sad to see in such a beautiful place.
