As part of La Biennale di Venezia 2024 there's an art installation at the Women's Prison in Venice. The prison is tucked away out of view on the island of Giudecca. It houses about 60 inmates, detainees, prisoners - it doesn't matter what word you use for the occupants of the prison, it's clear that they are captives. Individuals who've had their freedom taken away from them.
This year for the first time ever the prison is being used as an exhibition space for the Biennale - very strange you might think - and in fact it gets stranger. The sponsors of the art exhibition at the prison are none other than The Vatican - that well-known bastion of women's rights and women's reproductive independence.

Visits to the art installation at the prison are not freely available (a bit like the prisoners), you have to go on-line pre-book, fill in a form, put in your ID/Passport details and then you are notified if your request (which is free of charge) has been accepted. Fortunately my application was accepted.

In late May I visited the prison and experienced the tour of the buildings and the art - the guides were two of the prisoners (they were both excellent - articulate and engaging). Here's an account of my emotions and feelings as I (as part of a group of about 20 people) visited the 'Casa di detenzione Femminile' di Venezia.
