Oh my goodness!!! How beautiful is this shot showing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and Ribblehead viaduct

We have loved seeing all of your Northern Lights photographs from the amazing light show over the Yorkshire Dales National Park on Sunday 🤩

This one from one of our followers particularly stood out and we wanted to share it with you - the iconic Viaduct with the aurora.

It was in Skipton that I learnt why we say ‘got the wrong end of the stick’. More on that shortly. The town is really worth visiting for its castle, canal, excellent walks, fascinating little museum & great high street. On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, its name means ‘Sheep Town’, and underlines its former importance as a place to trade sheep and woollen goods.

900 year old SKIPTON CASTLE watches over the town like a matriarch watching their relatives at a party, thinking over the past and reflecting with satisfaction that although there are changes, the family is still strong. It’s one of the most complete, best preserved castles in England. It feels really loved and cherished, and is full of great stories. It’s said sheep fleeces were hung over the walls to lesson the impact of the bombardment during the Civil War. Children delight in finding the ‘long drop’ and realising that was the toilet. Then they find out about the stick covered in moss on one end which was the fore-runner to recycled toilet paper... You can imagine how it felt to pick up the ‘wrong end of the stick”!

Woodland Trust - Skipton Castle Woods feel like the castle’s back garden but are worth a visit in their own right. The woods support lots of wildlife including badgers and deer, at least 28 species of bird, as well as butterflies, and five species of bat. As you wander through the woods, you'll spot oak, lime and beech trees. Look more closely and there are over 160 different plants, grasses and herbs. Many have healing properties - at one time the Castle's herbalist would have used the Woods as their pharmacy.

You can enjoy a different view of Skipton by taking a canal boat along the Leeds - Liverpool canal, or follow the tow path to see more of Skipton's industrial heritage. Skipton's high street has managed to retain much of its character with plenty of independent shops, and still holds a frequent and well-attended market. The Auction Mart offers an insight into a different side to Skipton’s heritage. It's fascinating to watch the skill of .auctions auctioneers. It used to be where you could get Udder Cream, which happened to be one of the best ever hand-creams but I don’t know if its still available.

The action mart has a novel dual personality, sometimes being transformed into The Mart Theatre for the panto and other events, or for the excellent Art in the Pen in August and the very popular Yarndale in September.

The Craven Museum and Gallery at Skipton Town Hall feels really welcoming and uplifting, packed with very relatable displays and exhibitions. It's particularly known for its displays on Dewhursts Cotton Mill (remember their cottons?), Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson and for Shakespeare's First Folio. Outside is another intriguing exhibition in a very small space - packed into the telephone kiosk!

What do you love about Skipton? Where are your favourite places to go/do?

Who knew? Maybe an interesting outing for our guests and who knows…maybe purchase a keepsake?

A little story about flat caps, Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales & Peaky Blinders. Know why woollen flat caps are so popular? Their story goes back almost 500 years. In order to protect the wool trade, a law was passed in 1571 that all non-noble men and boys over 6 should wear a wool cap on Sundays and public holidays. They were fined if they didn’t. By the time the law was repealed in the 1590s, the tradition had stuck. It continued through the centuries, especially in colder areas with easy access to wool and tweed – hence its Northern English associations.

At various times tweed caps have enjoyed a fashion-boost, such as thanks to Burberry’s. The real life Peaky Blinders wore baker boy and flat caps as part of their smart dress, sometimes hiding razor blades in their hats.

Nowadays you’re guaranteed to see well-worn flat caps on heads anywhere that farmers gather. Practical and long-lasting, you can see why Yorkshire-men favour them!

Here in the Yorkshire Dales, family-owned Glencroft, based in a cow shed in beautiful Clapham are still producing timeless ‘proper’ clothing. They recently created their most sustainable flat cap yet: the 'Norber' named after the unusual limestone formations in the Dales. It’s made with locally sourced British wool tweed, woven in a traditional mill by Saddleworth Moor.

Given how little farmers are now paid for their wool, I imagine a few would be in favour of bringing back the law that had such an enduring impact on British fashion and Northern stereotypes?!

If you had to choose the 7 Wonders of the Yorkshire Dales - 'must sees', what would they be? These are mine (this week, they constantly change...) - not all famous, but definitely worth discovering:
1. The Swaledale hay meadows
2. Gordale Scar and the limestone pavements
3. Settle Carlisle Railway CRP and Ribblehead Viaduct
4. The miles and miles of dry stone walls and field barns - can't decide on my favourite location but Littondale, Arkengarthdale and Wensleydale all come close
5. Jervaulx Abbey
6. The Middleham to Kettlewell road, and countless spots along the way
7. Walks around Reeth and a treat from Two Dales Bakery (yes, pastries should be treated as wonders as well as landscapes and buildings)

The most extensive caving area in the UK is here, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, including the longest cave system - the Three Counties System - and one of the largest caverns and the highest unbroken underground waterfall at Gaping Gill.

Huge thanks to Craven Pothole Club for accommodating us earlier this week for a filmed project coming soon!
