Every spring, as the bluebells bloom and daffodils nod approvingly in the breeze, motorists across Wales are warned by curious road markings: SLOW ARAF.

A rare and timid creature native to the winding lanes of Cymru.

Nestled deep in hedgerows, the elusive Araf is a cross between a dragon, a butterfly and unwanted sheep wool. With the aerodynamic grace of a Croc and the fight-or-flight response of a hungover hedgehog, the Araf ventures out only at dusk to forage for crumbs of Bara Brith and the occasional Welsh cake.

Should you be fortunate enough to spot one (usually curled around a twig like a tiny pensioner trying to work a TV remote), please approach gently. Wrap it in a warm rugby sock and transport it home immediately. Its preferred diet? Welsh Rarebit, lovingly poured over a digestive biscuit, and a shallow dish of Brains SA ale — not too fizzy or the poor thing will faint.

After a few days of gentle karaoke (Tom Jones preferred) and reruns of “Pobol y Cwm,” your Araf will recover enough to take up roost behind your curtains or inside the kettle, depending on mood.

So next time you're barrelling round a bend in the Valleys, and you see the word “ARAF,” take heed — you’re not just slowing down for traffic. You’re respecting a national treasure.

Protect the Araf. Drive slow.
