I found this pic the other day.
A few years ago now, we had no choice but to go through this tunnel… the height restriction was lower than the height of the wagon was when we’d set off, I figured I could drop a few inches by letting the tyres down , the tunnel just got smaller and smaller.. lower and narrower .. literally an inch or two by the end…we must have put on weight on our travels, but just scraped through.
Anyway I like the picture. Fear and relief.
Please share with anyone/group that may be interested.

Peter Ingram has had a limited reprint of his Book Wagtail Tale, it is now available directly from him at Limes End Yard Publishing, Selborne, Hampshire, GU34 3LD. or call 01420 511486, Peter has advised that due to rising costs it will now be £20 + £5 post and packing The book is 330 pages - "Wagtail Tale is not an easy book to sum up: it’s not just a story, and it’s not just a book about Romany culture. It’s a complete picture of how the last of the old wagon-dwelling Travellers lived in the middle of the last century, and it makes a fine case for why their way of life deserves to be remembered as a unique part of British history". TO HELP SAVE THE FAIR!
Brough Hill Fair was once the biggest horse fair in England, and has been held annually under a Royal Charter since 1330. National Highways propose to build a new dual carriageway through the site of the Fair, and have offered a replacement site in a nearby field which is wholly unsuitable. Gypsy and Traveller representatives and local residents have objected strongly and consistently to these proposals, but their objections and questions have so far been ignored. The Secretary of State for Transport now has until 7th November 2023 to make a decision. After almost 700 years of continuous use, this could be the end of Brough Hill Fair. Please come along and show your support. Rally in Brough Village, Sunday 1st October at 12.00 Noon.
Beautiful sunset, but just below the sun there’s an ash tree someone dug up a few years ago and gave me. It was very tall and spindly, I planted it and it showed a splutter of life then seemed to die.. maybe ash dieback… this year a shorter bushy version of itself has sprung back to life.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Hungarian Gypsy photographer Eszter Halasi After meeting meeting at Appleby horse fair a couple of weeks ago, she asked if she could come and document our lives as part of a multi media project, for Travellers' Times and a book she’s working on… We spent an intense couple of days being photo documented from dusk till dawn! I’ll keep posting a few of her pictures over the coming weeks #wagontime #ontheroad #behindthescenes #travellers #nomad #horses #horse #gypsycaravan #vardo #photography #wanderlusts
Just been to Halifax to see my old friend Anth @anthonyanderson45 at his circus @circusextreme Can’t believe it’s 30 years since we joined the circus and the different journeys life’s taken us on, yet it always seems like yesterday… If you get the chance, get down to Halifax this week to see the show or follow them on here to see their tour dates. It’s an intense and brilliant show!
Yoking up and leaving Appleby horse fair on Sunday lunchtime. Hundreds of people had already left. There’s always a few folk that look for the negatives and comment on images of the fair. This video shows fair hill from one end to the other. Fair hill is the area that most Travellers camp on and mostly tourists don’t go. I would argue that it’s also where you’ll find the least mess. I’ve sped up the video , so you only need to take a minute to watch the 10 minute walk out. Try and focus on the negatives. What do you see? Particularly one of the most popular issues, the rubbish, look at how much rubbish you see and try comparing to any festival site on the last day. Remember this is not an organised event, but the coming together of thousands of individuals, families and friends and horses! #applebyhorsefair2023 #applebyhorsefair
This weekend’s guest was opera singer Adam Christie with his family.. On Saturday morning we couldn’t work out what the noise was, but the cows and sheep in neighbouring fields started bellowing and bleating and the horses went trotting to the gate to see. Adam later explained that he had to do voice exercises everyday for an upcoming concert. It was incredible to here and see the response of the animals. Later that day on the road as he followed the wagon he started singing and the horses left him for dust! By today, they had worked things out, striding along side by side with his booming baritone… Here he is singing Robert Lewis Stephenson’s The Vagabond. “Give to me the life I love, Let the lave go by me, Give the jolly heaven above And the byway night me. Bed in the bush with stars to see, Bread I dip in the river — There’s the life for a man like me, There’s the life for ever. Let the blow fall soon or late, Let what will be o’er me; Give the face of earth around And the road before me. Wealth I seek not, hope nor love, Nor a friend to know me; All I seek, the heaven above And the road below me. Or let autumn fall on me Where afield I linger, Silencing the bird on tree, Biting the blue finger; White as meal the frosty field — Warm the fireside haven — Not to autumn will I yield, Not to winter even! Let the blow fall soon or late, Let what will be o’er me; Give the face of earth around, And the road before me. Wealth I ask not, hope, nor love, Nor a friend to know me. All I ask, the heaven above And the road below me.” #opera #thevagabond #theopenroad #ontheroad #wanderlustsgypsycaravans
Experimenting with this antique French clockwork spit jack I picked up at a car boot sale recently, it’s stamped with the date 1844. It was all jammed up when I got it, but a little oil and it’s running like clockwork....A small ree-range chicken seasoned with a little paprika and harrissa and the delicious Blackthorn Salt @blackthornsalt Home grown courgette (@nadiatahari ) and parboiled newish potatoes sizzled in the oils below....It was delicious! You can’t beat eating by the fire what you’ve cooked on the fire! Earlier this week I got a call asking if it would be possible to take a lady’s granny out for her 80th birthday as she’d always wanted to travel in a Gypsy wagon. Really I didn’t have time, but couldn’t resist such an opportunity to give someone the chance to fulfill that dream! They drove all the way down from Inverness for the experience. She had a wee shot at driving too which she said made her day. A real privilege. Sometimes it’s just the simple things that make it all worthwhile.. #horsedrawnholiday #equestrianescapes #bucketlist #wanderlust #wanderlusts #gypsy #gypsywagon #fulfilyourdreams #simplethings
