❄️🧣"Step Into Winter: Adventures (and Laughs) Await!" 🧣❄️

Did you know that yesterday was "Blue Monday"? It is a day part of a list of annual awarness days that is often regarded as the most depressing day of the year. But it doesn't need to be. I made sure my Monday was not going to be a Blue Monday and went for a walk in Beacon park first thing in the morning. I wanted to spot roe deers as they always cheer me up... and I did find them!! It really made my day.

Winter is a great season to embrace the outdoors and stay active. Whether you’re taking a frosty hike, enjoying the thrill of ice skating, or simply exploring nature’s beauty, there are plenty of ways to make the most of this chilly time of year. One activity you might not have considered? Bird watching!

The **RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch** is coming up, this week end in fact. It is a nationwide event that helps monitor and protect our feathered friends. By taking just an hour to count the birds in your garden or local park, you’ll be contributing to vital conservation efforts. It’s an easy way to connect with nature while making a real difference. 🐦✨ I use a great app, Merlin Bird ID, to help me recognise the bird songs. It is free and is really good.

Speaking of birds, check out this photo I snapped in London! Can you guess where in London it was taken from? As I was about to cross the road, a group of geese waddled up and politely took the pedestrian crossing—talk about road rules for the birds! 🦆😂

Have you ever caught birds in a funny moment? Share your photos and stories in the comments below! and if you have other winter activities suggestions, let's hear them!

Learn more about how you can get involved in the Big Garden Birdwatch here: https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch.

Happy bird watching!

❄️ Winter Wanderings: A Skyward View from North View B&B 🌅
We’ve been very fortunate with the weather recently—snowy landscapes have given way to stunning skies like this.

This photo was taken from our B&B. Doesn't it look like an alien invasion? These clouds are called lenticular clouds (shape of a lentil) and have long been subjects of folklore and myth.

Did you know where the flying saucer term comes from? You guessed it ... from lenticular clouds. The story goes that in 1947, pilot Kenneth A. Arnold reported seeing nine high-speed objects near Mount Rainier, Washington, describing them as "saucer-like," which led to the term "flying saucer."

Lenticular clouds are best spotted in the winter. Their distinct, layered shapes often resemble saucers or lenses, forming a dramatic and still presence in the sky.

🌟 3 Facts About Lenticular Clouds:

1️⃣ Shaped by the Landscape: Lenticular clouds form when stable, moist air flows over mountains or hills, creating smooth, wave-like air currents.
2️⃣ Indicators of Turbulence: These clouds are often associated with strong winds, making them a key signal for aviators to note potential turbulence.
3️⃣ Stationary Appearance: While the air is constantly moving through them, lenticular clouds tend to stay in one place, forming where conditions are just right.

Take a moment during your winter walk or while relaxing by the window to appreciate the sky. Observe the patterns, colors, and formations of the clouds—lenticular or otherwise.

Have you spotted great cloud formations where you are? Please share your photo if you have.

Cloud spotting is fun and it can also be a simple yet effective way to predict short-term weather changes. Lenticular clouds, for example, often indicate strong winds at higher altitudes and can signal incoming changes in atmospheric conditions, such as turbulence or storms nearby.

All very fascinating, we just have to look up!
Have a lovely week-end exploring folks.

🌨️❄️ Embrace the Magic of Winter Wanderings! 🌲✨

There's something special about a winter walk. The landscape is transformed into a serene wonderland, where the gentle crunch of snow beneath your boots and the crisp, invigorating air create an experience like no other. I love walking early morning in the forest behind the house, wandering through the frosted landscapes, taking a moment to appreciate the quiet beauty. It's the perfect time to slow down and connect with nature.

And speaking of nature's wonders, have you ever noticed those fascinating, intricate growths clinging to rocks and trees? Meet lichen—a remarkable symbiosis of fungi and algae or bacteria. Lichen is not only a testament to the resilience of life but also plays a vital role in our ecosystems as a pioneer species that helps break down rocks into soil, providing a foundation for plant life.

🌿 Here are some captivating lichen facts to ponder on your next winter walk:

1. Lichen can not only survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth, from arctic tundras to scorching deserts, it can also survive in space. In 2005, 2 types of lichen (Rhizocarpon geographicum or map lichen and Xanthoria elegans) were sent to space as an experiment. For 14 days they were exposed to wide fluctuations of temperature, solar UV light and cosmic radiation. And they survived!

2. These tiny organisms are natural air quality indicators, absorbing pollutants and providing scientists with clues about environmental health. 🍃

3. Some lichen can live for thousands of years, making them one of the oldest living organisms on the planet. The map lichen, pictured below, is believed to be about 8,600 years old, making it one of the oldest organisms on Earth.

We'd love to hear about your own lichen encounters! Share your photos or stories of these incredible organisms in the comments below. Have you spotted any unique lichen formations on your winter adventures? 🧐📸

Happy exploring, fellow outdoor enthusiasts! 🌍💚

It’s winter, let’s make the most of it! End of week 1, where has this week gone?

So much fun to be had! Here, in the Lake District, it is winter wonderland and people have been enjoying the snow and fine weather: skiing, snowboarding, hiking, climbing, walking, swimming to name a few. Here is a selection of photos taken this week alone…it is absolutely stunning 😍 But don’t take my word for it, come and see for yourself 👍🏻 Our B&B is just perfectly located for you to explore and have fun!

Winter Wonderland in the Lake District!
Good fun to be had on the fells (mountains). It is winter and safety should not be compromised. Be adventure smart!
Yesterday, I walked up Helvellyn via Striding edge and descended on Swirrel edge. I have done this walk many times in summer conditions. It was my first time in Winter conditions with deep snow on the ground. So, I checked the weather (mountain weather forecast), pack my rucksack with the right gear for the day (I’ll share this in another post), dressed accordingly, and also checked the road conditions to get to the starting point. The objective of the day was to complete the walk however it is important to be flexible and amend plans if need be. Walking in deep snow is tiring and there is nothing wrong in shortening or changing the plan entirely 👍🏻

Whenever you go and explore the great outdoors, particularly in the mountains in winter time, ask yourself 3 questions:
1. Do I have the right gear?
2. Do I know what the weather will be like?
3. Am I confident that I have the knowledge and skills for the day

Be Adventure smart!

For mountain weather forecast in the UK, I use a minimum of 3 sources to give me a better picture: the Met Office mountain weather, XC Weather, Mountain Weather Information Service.

If you don’t feel confident enough but would love to explore, why not taking a course to learn or improve your skills or hire a guide 🙂

They are both coming to Penrith to share some of their epic adventures. Simon on 23rd January and Emily on 25th February… not to be missed!

Ullswater, Lake District: 7:15am. Getting ready to enter the water for an early morning swim. Air temperature: 0 degree C. Water temperature: around 7 degrees I reckon (I don’t have a thermometer, it is on my Christmas list though 🎅).
I needed a head torch to approach the beach where I place my bag with all post swim equipment. Getting warm quickly after the swim is important. My clothes are laid in the right order: tops go first to keep the chore of my body warm then the legs, feet, head and hands. I have also a hot water bottle and a hot drink.
But why on Earth do I go wild swimming in the winter, I hear you say? if you would have asked me to go for a winter swim in the dark a year or so ago, I would had replied: not a chance! But now I am hooked! The physical and mental benefits of cold water swimming/therapy are well known. But imagine swimming in the lake where no one else is around but ducks, the water is calm, there is no wind. It is very still and you see the reflections of the surrounding mountains on the water, you swim towards the light. As your turn around, you see the mountains in shades of pink and orange as the sun is slowly rising. You feel blessed and grateful to be able to witness the birth of a winter day in such a surrounding 🙏🏻 local adventure at its best 👍🏻
Have you tried wild swimming? If so, Where do you swim?

I have been meaning to go back to Ennerdale for a while and yesterday was the day. It didn’t disappoint. This is one of the most remote Cumbria valleys and in 2022 it became a National Nature Reserve. I didn’t see many people yesterday as I was running around the lake, stopping to admire the landscape and taking it all in. You really have a sense of wilderness here at this time of year.
Of course, Ennerdale is known for its rewilding project to restaure its biodiversity. Sitka Spruce plantations dominated the landscape for the past century and sheep grazing reduced the biodiversity and habitats. The Ennerdale project started around 20 years ago and its aim is « to let natural processes shape the landscape and ecology ». It is lovely to see this valley getting greener with more native trees and plants.
A couple of years ago, I walked the Ennerdale horse shoe over 2 days, wild camping. Yesterday, I looked at that walk from the valley floor. It brought back some great memories. Both are amazing walks.

A sound Off-site safety management is crucial for any outdoor activities be it in the UK or abroad. I have just attended a Royal Geographical Society 2-day workshop run by I highly recommend it for anyone involved in planning visits/expeditions. It gives you an in-depth look at the safety management issues involved in planning, managing and evaluating the activities/expeditions.

The Cumbria Tourism conference was excellent. It was such an interesting event with great speakers. From national companies and organisations ‘ CEOs and Directors to uni students. 6 sessions, 1 theme: future trends and innovation in the tourism industry. We learnt about future visitor trends, smart tourism and the role of AI and other technologies to enhance experiences; bitcoin- will it be the future payment system?; transport: a seamless journey from starting point to destination and beyond. Have you heard of PlusBus? It is a bus and tram pass valid with your train ticket (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tickets-railcards-and-offers/connecting-travel/plusbus/), food - the future of farmers with the new inheritance tax legislation

AI was a big topic and what was reassuring for me was to hear the students’ analysis and how cautious they were when researching holiday destinations.
I remember how the arrival of the internet changed the tourism industry back in the early 90s. People could research flights/holiday destinations from the comfort of their homes rather than going to a travel agent/tour operator.
Still, 1 in 3 people prefer a face to face interaction and human expertise. They want immersive and less crowded/rural experiences. And guess what? This is exactly our offering: unique, immersive, transformational experiences 😀

-1 C , snowy fells in the background, clear sky and a beautiful landscape this morning. Today, I chose courage over comfort but I must admit, I nearly gave in to the comfort of my warm bed ☺️. However, I knew I would feel great if I went swimming.
Would love to hear your outdoor challenges!
