Today!

The next Ullswater Evening Talk is "From Herdwick Lamb to Michelin Stars: The Fine Dining Revolution in Cumbria". The talk will be given by Mark Vause, owner of '1863 Restaurant with Rooms', (https://1863ullswater.co.uk) a family-run, multi-award-winning fine dining restaurant with rooms in Pooley Bridge.
The talk will take place at 7.30 pm on Thursday 5th September at Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge, and on ZOOM. Everyone is welcome.
Mark will delve into the fascinating history of Cumbria's fine dining scene, starting with the pivotal role played by Sharrow Bay, the birthplace of the country house hotel concept. The talk will explore the 'ripple effect' of culinary innovation in Cumbria, illustrating how the success of pioneering chefs has sparked a broader movement, elevating the region to a new level of fine dining excellence. In fact, in 2024 Cumbria now boasts 13 restaurants that together hold Fifteen Michelin Stars and one Michelin Green Star– the UK county having the greatest number Michelin starred restaurants outside of London.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Mark will share the inspiring story of his creation of ‘1863 Restaurant with Rooms’. He’ll recount its ambitious transformation from a Guest House to a top-tier dining destination.
Gordon Lightburn, Chair of FOUW said: "The fine dining scene is without doubt a significant Cumbrian success story. It is a story inspired by individual passion and determination to achieve excellence! We may look forward with mouth-watering anticipation to a fascinating presentation, finely blended with contributions created here at Ullswater."

Maybe you recognise Stybarrow Crag in James Barrett's painting. The narrow track is now the A592! James Barrett (1767-1819) came from a family of artists and inherited the post of Master Painter at Chelsea Hospital, London, from his father, a landscape painter. He travelled to Wales, Scotland and the Lake District in search of picturesque sights. This painting is ‘Stybarrow Crag by James Barrett, courtesy of the Wordsworth Trust.’

Then and now - what has changed? When the artist, Samuel Bough (1822 - 1878), painted 'Patterdale Cattle Auction' the Patterdale Inn was run by John Gelderd. It subsequently became the Gelderd Family Hotel and today is Patterdale Hotel. Apart from a change in the hotel's name, what else is different? And what remains the same?

Such a pleasure to be out with Tebay hill farmer, Libby, to spend time with her wonderful fell ponies near Borrowdale Beck yesterday. Fell ponies should form a big part of the future of Cumbria’s uplands. They mostly tolerated me singing ‘My lovely horse’ at them…

Who knows what the weather will be doing in the Lake District this week? What we do know is that, come rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, you can depend on a National Trust trail to entertain little ones.

Try one of these and get searching, exploring, finding and discovering.

🌳 Explore Acorn Bank’s woodland and walled garden on a self-led nature trail, and play some traditional games at the front of the house.

🐚 At Sizergh, trace 800 years of family history by taking the scallop trail through the house. Can you find all the shells?

🦆 Go on a family-friendly nature trail at Fell Foot, Windermere, with a trail sheet from one of the welcome huts around the park.

📖 Borrow an illustrated guide at Townend to help children explore the Browne family’s stories. There’s one for young children and one for slightly older kids too.

🖋️ Explore Wordsworth House and Garden with a children’s trail. Just pick up a trail sheet at the front desk.

Due to flood damage between Honister & Buttermere the 77 service will only be able to operate between Keswick & Buttermere, the 77A will operate between Keswick & Honister
There will be no bus between Honister and Buttermere until the road is fixed, but the buses are still running. It will be a there and back again route rather than a circular route, and there are no main bus stops along the section that is closed.
The two buses are very much still in operation.

Try a car-free adventure with the National Trust in the Lake District this summer.
🚆 🚌🚲 🥾🛥

Whether you’re travelling by train, bus, bike or on foot, you can enjoy a day out at many of our places without needing to drive.

Here’s some inspiration to get you started. For more information, go to: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/lake-district/places-you-can-visit-in-the-lake-district-without-a-car

🚌 Take a scenic bus ride through the Lake District to Sizergh and claim your free hot drink. From the bus stop, get your steps in with the 25-minute stroll up the lane to the castle. Or visit by bike – the National Cycle Route 70 (NCN70) passes the main gate, as does the Lakes and Dales loop.

🚌 Visit Acorn Bank by bus. The 563 Stagecoach bus service between Penrith train station and Appleby stops in Temple Sowerby every day except Sunday, and from there it’s a pleasant one-mile walk along the public footpath.

🥾 Enjoy a ten-minute walk up the drive from Grasmere village to Allan Bank. To get to Grasmere, catch Stagecoach’s 555 bus service between Keswick and Kendal, or the 599 bus service between Bowness and Grasmere.

🛥 Go by bus or boat to Fell Foot. Stagecoach’s number 6 bus service from Newby Bridge, Windermere and Bowness stops outside the entrance, while Windermere Lake Cruises’ Lakeside to Fell Foot ferry runs regularly until 29 September.

🚆 Walk the seven-mile stretch of cliff path along Whitehaven Coast and catch the train back. There’s a train station at both ends of the route. Or travel by bus – either the 300/301 from Carlisle, Wigton and Maryport to Whitehaven or service 6/X6 from Millom, Ravenglass and Egremont. You can cycle too – the Coast to Coast Cycle Route (NCN71) starts from Whitehaven Harbour and the Hadrian's Cycleway (NCN72) also passes through.

🛥 Boat, bus or bike – there are plenty of options for a car-free trip to Wray. Windermere Lake Cruises’ Green Cruise stops at Wray Castle’s jetty; Stagecoach’s 505 bus service between Coniston and Windermere drops you half a mile from the entrance to the Wray estate; or enjoy a four-mile bike ride on off-road cycle paths from Ambleside and along the west shore of Windermere between Claife Viewing Station and Wray.

📷 Young visitors enjoy the space in the gardens at Acorn Bank.

Thomas Allom is primarily remembered for his topographical illustrations. In 1832 he published a three volume work. ‘Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland Illustrated from Original Drawings. This fishing scene, ‘Second Reach of Ullswarter’ © Martin and Jean Norgate, reminds us that Ullswater once supported a thriving fish industry.
