Walkitcornwall Guided walking holidays and day walks in Cornwall, UK. A bit of walking philosophy thrown in. Why and how humanity has walked.
(4)

I provide walking holidays in the wonderfully unique county of Cornwall, the south west of the United Kingdom. I am organising walking holidays in The Isles of Scilly, Corfu and on Dartmoor in Devon for our international friends and future guests. I am also interested in the philosophy of walking, the cultural and historical heritage of walking.

The old tropes of "Hidden Cornwall" and "The Secret Cornwall" to sell a vision of an unspoilt landscape really does irk me. Cornwall is neither hidden nor secret.

What it does have is numerous coves and beaches that require a bit of a clamber down to and across so that one can sit often alone with a bay to ones self with just the birds and often seals to keep you conscious of being part of nature and a visitor to their habitat.

This bay is on the Roseland Peninsula ('ros' meaning spur, nothing to do with the rose flower) and has been an overnight camping spot on occasion.

I never get tired of Kynance cove on the Lizard peninsula. I've taken hundreds of photos of this spot always looking for the definitive shot. However it is beautiful in all weathers, even in a brooding mist where you feel the surrounding cliffs even if you can't see them.
Here, (as David Attenborough says) we see the magnificence of the 375 million year old Serpentine rock that has been weathered and buffeted by waves, wind and rain moulding this coastline and continues to do so, shaping it for millions of years to come.
The jewel in the Lizard crown

I thought about putting up a series of random walk photos from 2023 so we can remember the longer days and the mixture of weather that has created, and continues to, effect the landscape.

Those who have walked with me will recognise some of these spots. For those who haven't been, well maybe 2024 is the time!?

Todays trio of photos are from the Lizard peninsula.
37.5 miles of wonderful coastline of globally unique geology and therefore very special views.

I stayed on for a few more days in Corfu and was joined by my daughter Maya. We did a bit of the tourist gaze and went to look over the whole island with views over to Albania and mainland Greece from the highest point on Pantokrator. We travelled to Lakones and Paleokastritsa, Cape Drastis and Canal D'amour while staying around Arillas in the north west where I played and sang at Brouklis restauant for the owner, Dimitri's saints name day celebration. I actually sat on a beach for a couple of days which is a rarity seeing the lesser spotted guide dozing on a beach.

Some of the last few days of the walking group's holiday in Corfu including Albania, the second venue of Kassiopi where we stayed in the northern part of Corfu and the area of rejuvenation after the serious fires of the summer around Old Perithia.

Two days of walking, one in Corfu and the other in Albania.

The mixed woodland up at 3-400m just below the 2nd highest peak of Ag. Deka on Corfu and walking to the Achilleon Palace from Ana Garouna and Ag. Deka village.

Then there were the trips to the site of Butrint, the blue eye pool and the Lekuresi castle in Albania. Trip over to Albania on the hydro foil.

First proper walk in the hills of the north west of Corfu from Krini to Afionas via Porto Timoni.
Hot - so the swim was very welcome as were the taverna stops.
Today's guide was Giannis and he kept us entertained and informed.
Breathtaking views.
In the evening a bit of piano bar in a very busy Friday night Corfu Town.

First full day for my guests which starts with a tour of Corfu Town stopping off for selected snacks and drinks. An amazing introduction to the history, culture and cuisine of Corfu with the wonderful Nausica of https://www.facebook.com/cfuwalkingtours

Then some free time to tour the town with a few of us going up the Old Fortress with views across the island.

Corfu - a few photos before this years group of guests arrive.
Any excuse to explore I’m trying out new walks and checking familiar ones.
Corfu never disappoints.

So what about next year? Have you anything planned for October?

Final walking week in Cornwall this week and it was a misty, brooding Cornwall with sunny spells.
Mesmerising to watch Autumn move in with leaves dropping, large weather fronts passing over the seas and hills of Kernow and the fading flowers with pockets of resistance.
Watch out for dates for 2024!

So I went for a walk in the storm up to Penninis Head on St Mary's and looked for the rocks that already have a name like The Claw, The Tooth, Toast Rack and Monks Cowl.

I thought I'd add a few as they resembled certain subjects.
So I present to you a proposition to go and find:-
The Sleeping Robot; The Brain, The Meercat, Triceratops, Heart Valves and finally..........Builders Bottom.

Tresco, I feel is an island of two distinct parts. The wild heathland and tors in the north and the verdant tree belts and lowland dunes in the south.
The wild and the constructed.
We enjoyed the dry weather and the threat of sun, which this time didn't appear and do justice to the sandy bays which transport you to the Mediterranean.

St Agnes, Gugh and St Martins with an extraordinary horizontal rainbow for our lunch stop entertainment.
One extremely heavy shower and the rest of the time we have been more than lucky with the weather.
Everyone has a favourite island and mine is whichever one we are on.

First day on the Scillies.
Very windy and the swells are majestic, playing with us on the boats. However, the sun shone at times as we watched the weather pass through quickly, changing every five minutes from a grey shroud covering the islands to a clarity of bright colours. Rainbows a plenty.

YES!! Common sense prevails!

We are delighted that three judges in the court of appeal have unanimously overturned the high court ruling and resolved that there is a right to backpack (wild) camp on Dartmoor’s common land. Read more: https://bit.ly/3YdpRai

Cornwall is starting to get busy but one walk is nearly always free from the crowds. Predannack inland to Mullion and then along the coast to Kynance and then inland to Predannack.
Today it was a riot of colour. The sea, the flowers and the scudding clouds.
Highlights were a flock of Choughs, the lingering smell of chamomile, a humming bird moth and all four heathers.

North Cornwall coast around Porthtowan and St Agnes on Tuesday and Roseland Peninsula circular at Portloe, Veryan and Nare Head today. Oh yeah, Trelissick too. Must have a daily tree hug.
Don't you love watching clouds moving across the sky and continually casting shadows on the landscape and sea? Simple pleasures. A colour show all day today.

Final day of walking and like many places we had 30 -40mm of rain from morning to the afternoon. Heavy rain that swelled the rivers to torrents and localised flooding on the roads and partially dry moors.
Still, we managed to go out on some visits to the central visitors centre in Princetown, visit our favourite equipment shop and get a coffee in.
When the rain stopped we spent a couple of hours on a riverside and temperate forest walk close to Yelverton. I'll put a video up of the river so you get to see the humbling force of the water cycle post continual downpour on Dartmoor. Fab ending to the walking week.

Two new walks today of two and a half hours each with a pub lunch in between. We beat the weather again and it was four seasons in one day. Tors, woodlands, plantations, very friendly horses, farms, tin mines and wide open spaces of the moors. We had it all. Great day.

A morning in Tavistock, the main town close to where we are staying in Yelverton, and a pasty lunch. Then an afternoon walk of four tors:- Cox, Roos, Great and Middle Staple Tor. Watching the rain going over Dartmoor, up the adjoining valleys and across the southern moors avoiding us. Ice cream to finish off.

Walking is Life

I provide guided walking holidays in the wonderfully unique county of Cornwall, the south west of the United Kingdom. For many years we have gone on walking holidays in Corfu, Menorca and on Dartmoor in Devon. I am planning for the Canary Islands and Isles of Scilly in 2019. I also lead guided walks and tours for the Falmouth Spring Festival and take tours in our 9 seater VW Caravelle around the Lizard Peninsula and Far West. I am based in Penryn close to the maritime town of Falmouth. I delve deep into the philosophy of walking and the natural history of this wonderful planet. As a creative professional musician I get inspired by the landscape and the multi sensory effect that it has on me. Walking and music are interconnected, inextricably linked into my DNA. Walking and music are my passion.
