At 15.5 miles from River Valley, Cape Cornwall is one of only two capes in Britain.

Cape Cornwall marks the spot where the Atlantic currents divide. Cape Cornwall was bought by the American company Heinz for the nation as part of their centenary celebrations, and presented to the National Trust in 1987. There is a distinctive plaque at the summit to mark this gift.

The chimney stack dates back to 1894, when Cape Cornwall Mine was in operation, extracting tin and copper from out under the sea. Now, the site is part of the Tin Coast and Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

Brissons rocks, the two rocks that can be seen from the headland, are an important breeding ground for seabirds and have caused many shipwrecks in their time.

Priests cove is a landing place for local fishermen that continues to be used to this day. There is a seasonal dog ban at the cove from Easter to the end of September. Dogs on leads are welcome at other parts of Cape Cornwall.

At just over 17 miles from us here at River Valley, Porthgwarra Beach is a picturesque inlet located right at the bottom of West Cornwall. Tucked away between Lands End and Porthcurno, it was once a thriving fishing cove. Porthgwarra Beach now enjoys a peaceful existence surrounded by local wildlife.

The cove and slipway are privately owned, but the public are permitted to quietly and respectfully enjoy them. Swimming in the cove is quite safe, provided swimmers do not go beyond the headland where there are dangerous, strong sea currents. At the foot of the cove's slipway is a tunnel dug by tin miners from St Just to give farmers horse-and-cart access to the beach to collect seaweed to use as a fertiliser. A second tunnel, leading seawards, is the fishermen's access to the tidal 'hulleys' built in the rocks to store shellfish.

The village is small, with a small shop, one cafe and toilets.

There is a seasonal dog ban from May to September.

Access to the beach is down some very narrow Cornish lanes but you may find that the beach is one of the places you could plan to visit if you are taking a walk along the coastal path.

At just over 20 miles from us at River Valley, Glendurgan Garden is a National Trust garden located in Mawnan Smith near Falmouth. It is celebrated for its stunning natural beauty, intricate landscaping, and historical significance.

It was created in the 1820s and 1830s by Alfred Fox, a member of a prominent Quaker family known for their interest in horticulture and the introduction of exotic plant species. The garden is designed as a valley garden, with winding paths that lead down to the picturesque hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River. The design incorporates a blend of formal and informal elements, featuring exotic plants, native trees including magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and a variety of subtropical species that thrive in Cornwall's mild climate.
One of the garden's most famous attractions is its cherry laurel maze, which was planted in 1833. The maze challenges visitors of all ages.

When you have reached the bottom of the garden you will discover the charming village of Durgan, consisting of a few cottages and a beach, providing a peaceful spot to enjoy the river's beauty.

As a property of the National Trust, Glendurgan Garden is maintained with a focus on conservation and education, ensuring that its historical and botanical heritage is preserved for future generations. The garden is managed with sustainable practices, emphasizing the protection of its diverse plant life and the surrounding natural environment.
Glendurgan Garden is a delightful destination for anyone interested in horticulture, history, or simply enjoying the serene beauty of a well-crafted garden landscape.

At 21 miles from River Valley, Kynance Cove is a stunning and picturesque cove located on the Lizard Peninsula. It's renowned for its turquoise waters, golden sandy beaches, and dramatic rock formations. The cove is situated within the Lizard National Nature Reserve, which is managed by the National Trust.

Visitors to Kynance Cove can enjoy various activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the caves and rock pools that dot the coastline. The area is also popular with walkers, who can take in the breathtaking views along the South West Coast Path.

One of the most distinctive features of Kynance Cove is the towering serpentine rock formations that jut out from the sea, providing a dramatic backdrop to the sandy beaches. At low tide, visitors can walk out to the small islands known as Asparagus Island and Gull Rock.

However, it's important to note that access to Kynance Cove can be challenging, particularly for those with mobility issues, as there are steep paths and steps leading down to the beach. Additionally, the cove is subject to tidal changes, so visitors should be aware of tide times to avoid getting cut off by the rising tide. Despite these challenges, Kynance Cove remains a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the stunning coastline of Cornwall.

There is a seasonal dog ban from the beginning of July until the end of August.

In 1961, Lt-Col Bolitho gave the estate over to the National Trust with the condition that the family could remain in residence. The gardens are open to the public but the house remains private.

The garden is famous for its extensive variety of plants, ferns and trees. The estate has over 50 species of magnolia, but it is the rhododendrons that Trengwainton is truly famous for.

Trengwainton also has a number of trees with just under 90 of its trees included on The Tree Register, a record of ancient and historical trees.

The gardens do allow dogs on leads.

At 7 miles from River Valley, Penlee House Gallery & Museum, in Penzance, showcases the art of West Cornwall. Theses collections include works by the Newlyn School and Lamorna artists. It’s the only Cornish venue specializing in these early 20th-century artists. Penlee House preserves and makes accessible the history and culture of West Cornwall.

Originally built in 1865, Penlee House is set within sub-tropical gardens in Penlee Park. The building itself was once a Victorian family home belonging to the wealthy Bramwell family. The house and grounds were bought by the town after the second world war.

In the museum you can explore thousands of objects, from archaeological finds to ceramics and social history. The museum also covers local history and fashion.

A programme of changing exhibitions celebrates the skill and craftsmanship of painting in west Cornwall in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The gardens around the gallery and museum houses a children's play park.

This little bug was spotted on one of the decking's. It is a shield bug, specifically a forest shield bug we think🤔.

As the name suggests, the forest shield bugs are commonly found around wooded areas, feeding on oak, alder and hazel trees as well as fruit trees. They are also known to eat caterpillars.

They are mainly seen from July to November.

14/08/2024

At 8.5 miles from River Valley, Porthleven is a fishing port near Helston. It is the most southerly working port in Great Britain, and was a harbour of refuge when this part of the Cornish coastline was infamous for wrecks in the days of sailing boats. The harbour once had a fleet of more than 100 drifters, used to fish pilchard and mackerel.

The harbour faces south west into the prevailing wind and consequently, the harbour construction and sea walls are massive.

Porthleven's beach has become one of Britain's best-known surfing spots, having powerful swells, often being described as "Cornwall's best reef break". Waves often exceeding 6.6 feet (2 m) break on a shallow reef that was shaped by blasting the harbour. Kayaking is also popular.

RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach in the holiday season.

The beach is separated from the harbour by a granite pier in front of the Porthleven Institute and clock tower. When the tide is out it is possible to walk about three miles east along Porthleven beach.

Being a fishing port, there are many fish restaurants in Porthleven to reflect this.

At 16 miles from River Valley, Porth Nanven, also known as Cot Valley beach, is located in the far west of Cornwall, half a mile west of St Just.

The beach is situated at the seaward end of the Cot Valley and is part of the Aire Point To Carrick Du Site of Special Scientific Interest.

One of its fascinating features are the ovoid boulders covering the beach which has led to it being nicknamed “Dinosaur Egg Beach” in the media. These boulders come in various sizes, from hen’s egg to over a metre in length. The boulders were shaped by the sea around 120,000 years ago. There is sand exposed at low tide.

There is no lifeguard cover on this beach. Dogs are welcome all year round.

The Lost gardens of Heligan are 38 miles from us here at River Valley.

Set in 200 acres, Heligan is one of the most mysterious estates in England. Lost to the brambles of time since the outbreak of WW1, it was re-awakened in 1990 to become Europe’s largest garden restoration project.

The outbreak of WW1 saw the estates workforce go off to fight in the trenches and sadly, mostly, never came back. From then on the estate went into a state of decline and neglect.

The estate was bought in the 1990's by the current owners and what they found there amongst the decay and decline, spurred them on to bring it back to life. They wanted to honour all those who had worked there before the outbreak of the war.

From its rediscovery and restoration of Victorian productive and ornamental gardens in the 1990s, their mission today is restoring lost connections with nature, ourselves and each other.

200 acres of adventure have been designed to let little legs and old minds run free. You can explore woodland trails in the Giant's Head Play Area, adventure across their iconic Jungle Rope Bridge, and discover Heligan Play Meadow.

Over 300 varieties of heritage fruit, vegetables, and herbs can be found there, you can meet native rare breed animals and wander through a magical estate.

A great day out and well worth a visit.
