At 7 miles from River Valley, Black Cliff Beach or Upton Towans as it is also known, is in the centre part of Hayle’s famous “three miles of golden sand” . This wide, sandy beach stretches from just beyond the river mouth to Mexico Towans. As the name suggests, it is backed by low cliffs, which provide some shelter from the breeze. The word towans is actually Cornish for sand dunes.

It’s a great spot for a relaxing day by the sea, with plenty of space for beach activities such as surfing and swimming

The sand dunes at this beach are a haven for wildlife that rely on this increasingly rare habitat for its survival, including the internationally rare and obscure petalwort and the striking silver-studded blue butterfly.



The beach is dog friendly, allowing dogs all year round.

At 15 miles from River Valley, Geevor Tin Mine is a world heritage site and former tin mining operation located in Pendeen. It was one of the last operating mines in Cornwall before its closure in 1990.

The exact date the mine started is unknown but there is reference to Wheal Geevor in 1883, in a mining journal. Geevor Tin Mine operated for over a century, primarily extracting tin, but also producing other minerals like copper and arsenic.

After its closure, Geevor Tin Mine was preserved as a museum and heritage site. Visitors can explore the surface buildings, underground tunnels, and exhibits that showcase the history and technology of tin mining in Cornwall. The site provides insight into the harsh working conditions and the importance of mining to the local economy.

Geevor Tin Mine offers guided tours of the underground workings, allowing visitors to experience firsthand, the conditions miners faced during the height of the industry, providing a glimpse into Cornwall's industrial past.

At just under 8 miles from River Valley, Gwithian Beach is a sandy beach that stretches three miles from the Hayle River mouth to the Red River mouth at Godrevy. The beach is popular throughout the year with surfers, windsurfers, and other beachsport enthusiasts. At approximately 9 miles from us here at River Valley, The Tate St Ives is an art gallery in St Ives. Over looking Porthmeor beach, it is open all year round. The gallery exhibits work by modern British artists with links to the St Ives area. At approximately 23 miles from River Valley, Kennack Sands is a beautiful beach located on the east side of the Lizard. It is a south east facing beach surrounded by three steep sided wooded valleys each with a small stream flowing onto the beach.

Despite its fairly remote location it is very popular with families. With masses of sand (at low tide), a stream and rock pools a plenty, kids love Kennack Sands. There are plenty of facilities including toilets and a cafe right by the beach .

With its south easterly aspect Kennack Sands is often quite sheltered from the wind, and considerably warmer than west coast beaches. This also means it can be a popular option for surfers when everywhere else is too windy. Most of the summer though it is a great spot for learning to surf.

The beach here is divided into what are referred to as Kennack Sands West and Kennack Sands East and become more-or-less separate at high tide. Dividing the two is a rocky outcrop called the Caerverracks which are home to a number of rockpools.

To the eastern end of the beach are the remains of a number of World War II defences. There are pill boxes on the hillside and an anti-tank wall running along the back of the beach.

Dogs are allowed on the eastern part of beach. No dogs on the main part of the beach July & August.

Lifeguards patrol the beach, weekends mid May - early July and daily from beginning July - beginning of September.

Located in Newquay, Newquay Zoo is a brilliant day out for all the family. It’s a place to roam, discover, explore and get in touch with nature. The zoo is home to hundreds of species of both plants and animals.

At 17 miles from us at River Valley, Polurrian Cove Beach is a beautiful, sandy beach located on the Lizard Peninsula. It's known for its stunning natural scenery, being set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The beach is surrounded by high cliffs and rugged rocky bluffs, offering breathtaking views and a sense of seclusion. The beach here is quite large at low tide when a fine expanse of golden sand is revealed. Due to its west-facing position, Polurrian Cove often picks up Atlantic swells, making it a good spot for surfing.

The South West Coast Path runs nearby, providing excellent opportunities for coastal walks. You can explore the headlands to Mullion Cove or Poldhu Cove.

Polurrian beach is a popular spot for families, especially during the summer months.

At 17 miles from River Valley, Land's End is a headland and tourist attraction in west Cornwall. Lands End is a 'must' place to visit when coming to Cornwall and is stunning at any time of the year. To the east of it is the English Channel, and to the west, the Celtic Sea.

Land's End is the most westerly point of mainland England.

Land's End is often used by charities raising money, who use Land's End to John o' Groats in Scotland as starting or finishing points. The distance between the 2 is 838 miles (1,349 km) by road. Land's End to the northernmost point of England is a distance of 556 miles (895 km) by road.

The area around Land's End has been designated part of an Important Plant Area, by the organisation Plantlife, for rare species of flora.

The Longships, a group of rocky islets, are just over 1 mile (1.6 km) offshore, and together with the Seven Stones Reef and the Isles of Scilly which lies about 28 miles (45 km) southwest – are part of the mythical lost land of Lyonesse, referred to in Arthurian literature.

In 2012, Lands End was the starting point for the Olympic torch for the London Olympics, for which it received worldwide publicity.

At approximately 10 miles from River Valley, Lambeth Walk Beach is located in St Ives.

The beach is situated between the harbour and Porthminster Beach, on the other side of the south pier. Lambeth Walk is the only, year-round, dog friendly beach in St Ives, without restriction.

Lambeth Walk Beach is often overlooked as it almost disappears at high tide. The beach becomes accessible at low tide, when it joins up with the harbour beach.

The beach is named after the dance hall craze and hit song "Lambeth Walk" from the late 1930s.
