Last month 3 Fearnhead’s slept rough to raise much needed funds for the BURTON UPON TRENT AND DISTRICT YMCA.

HOPING SANTA BRINGS A NEW📱THIS CHRISTMAS?

Then it’s worth remembering that new measures are set to be introduced by the government that will make prosecutions against drivers using handheld mobile phones at the wheel easier.

While texting or making a phone call (other than in an emergency) using a handheld device while driving is already illegal, laws set to be introduced next year will go further, banning drivers from activities such as filming, photographing, playing games or scrolling through playlists with their phones.

It’s worth noting that anyone caught using a phone while driving will face a £200 fixed penalty notice and SIX points on their licence.

Drivers WILL still be able to use devices ‘hands-free’ while driving, such as satnavs, if secured in a cradle… but they can still be charged with an offence if they are found not to be in control of their vehicle.

As you’d expect, The Highway Code will also be revised to explain the changes, and to provide precise detail around that fact that being stationary in traffic counts as driving… quite simply, using a phone while waiting at traffic lights or in motorway queues is illegal, except in very limited circumstances.

An exemption to the new law will cover drivers making contactless payments with their mobiles… think drive-through restaurants and road tolls for example.

Remember the three D’s…

The law needed to be brought into the 21st century, these changes will make it easier to prosecute people who are illegally using their phones at the wheel, and all road users need to be protected.

So if Santa brings a new phone, it should bring pleasure… not prison.

Well we know now! 😷

Politics aside, there’s been much speculation and talk over the past few days regarding potential strike action… and at the worst possible time for the retail sector.

Contingency plans will be being activated at speed.

AS CREW HQ IS IN PETERBOROUGH…

We were interested to learn that GB Railfreight had trained 70 new train drivers in the last 12 months at its centre, close to our hometown.

Rail freight will doubtlessly become a viable option as the shortage of HGV drivers continues, and carbon emission worries deepen.

Former Tesco employees Michael Fearnhead and Sue Alty are familiar with Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT), and they read that Operations Manager, Stuart Vinten had said that the capacity for more rail transport is there, even though there are already 400 trains a day running!

And even though we knew about DIRFT, we were gobsmacked to learn that not only do a whopping 9,000 people work there, for every train that comes in, it takes 60 HGV’s off the road.

Furthermore, the site are planning to take on a further 4,000 people in the New Year, when a new terminal opens.

According to Paul Weston, Regional Head of Prologis UK, who own the terminal, said that supermarkets had increased the number of trains using the centre, and more importantly… Tesco are running special wine trains to ensure stores were fully stocked! 🍷

That’s got to beat a gravy train any day hasn’t it!!!

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE…

Crew-mate Sue Alty is on the warpath after experiencing not one, but two episodes of poor customer service yesterday.

She had dealings with two companies, both household names, and received poor customer service from the first, and poor standards from the second.

Watch out for the post/blog… trust us, Sue’s wrath will fuel her writing… you have been warned!

All jokes aside, poor service and standards can lose you customers, reputation and revenue.

You can have the best business in the world, but it can be so easily lost with just one sub-standard incident.

Don’t lose out on customers because of your service.

A ‘TEETH AND T*TS’ APPROACH TO MENTAL HEALTH…

There should be two windows open on your advent calendar by now. The countdown to the Big Day has begun, and radio stations have started to blast out their annual festive playlists!

Last weekend we were very moved whilst watching and listening to Dan Walker’s deeply personal tribute to Gary Speed.

It was hard to believe that it’s been a decade since Gary’s death by su***de, and whilst we’re all so much more informed about mental health, the statistics around su***de, especially for men remain truly horrendous.

And whilst Gary was the catalyst for the blog Crew-mate Sue Alty wrote this week, you’d be forgiven for wondering where on earth the ‘Teeth and T*ts Approach to Mental Health’ title came from!

For that, Sue goes back in time to her former career in hotels. In a time before Mental Health First Aiders, counselling and social media, she tells us that life was more ‘school of hard knocks’.

So with that in mind, her title of a ‘Teeth and T*ts Approach To Mental Health’ will make more sense!

And whilst it’s not an approach we’d advocate, many of us will have experienced it.

GOT A SHIP? YOU’RE GOING TO NEED A CREW!

Okay, it was a pun too good to miss! We’re good at a lot of things, but ship’s crew probably isn’t one of them!

But we’re sure that Asda, Britain’s third largest supermarket have got that covered after taking the bold step of chartering a vessel to help them overcome the challenges of logistics this Christmas!

They are quoted as saying that they are “successfully navigating the industry-wide supply chain challenges” and taking steps “to help ensure its shelves are stocked with everything shoppers need for Christmas”.

And if that wasn’t enough, Asda have also hired 15,000 temporary staff to service its customers during the busy period, and they’ve increased the capacity of home delivery slots in the week before Christmas to one million, up from 765,000 last year.

Asda aren’t the only retailer to charter shipping, John Lewis have done the same.

It would seem that Asda are pulling out all the stops to ensure their customers have a good Christmas, and let’s face it, with a ship stocked full of festive decorations, toys, clothes and gifts, it’ll be ‘beginning to look a lot like Christmas’!

WHY IS BLACK FRIDAY SO CALLED?

This is a genuine question!
We were debating this amongst The Chrysalis Crew the other day, and between us and the internet, we ended up with a variety of responses, so if anyone has the definitive answer, PLEASE let us know!

Whatever its origin, this year it felt as though Black Friday ran for most of November, we saw Cyber Monday at the beginning of the week, and of course many retailers have continued to offer discounts and offers.

It’s been the ultimate test for logistics operations as both e-commerce and high street sales hit their annual peak.

And of course it’s been even more challenging this year thanks to the ongoing issues of the driver shortage and the pandemic.

So The Crew wanted to say thank you.

Thank you to each and every person who works in the chain of supply… our heroes and heroines who deliver day after day, despite disruptions and disadvantages.

Whatever your role in the chain… we salute you.

SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT!

With the all the latest issues and precautions regarding the pandemic, it can become easy to shift focus.

But that’s when things can go wrong.

Supply chain is exceptionally busy as we head towards the ‘most wonderful time of the year’, with many operations seeing an increase in third party staff and contractors on site.

Now is not the time to forget operational Health & Safety, risk assessments and method statements, as the spotlight remains on the daily pandemic developments.

Is everyone in your operation equipped and qualified to carry out their duties?

And what about visitors to site and members of the public. As of course The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 impose a legal duty of care for these groups of people.

It’s a huge responsibility.

At one end of the scale, the fines and costs for breaches are heavy, and at the other, people can pay the ultimate price… with their life.

Corners can’t be cut. There can be no compromise.

So now is the time to:

⚠️ Review safety procedures

⚠️ Make risk assessments mandatory before embarking on any projects that will involve volunteers, contractors or members of the public

⚠️ Ensure training is available, particularly for tasks that involve machinery

⚠️ Always ask to see specialist contractors’ own risk assessments and method statements, and monitor what work they are carrying out
