A wonderful base for a break exploring this beautiful area of Scotland, the views over the rolling Aberdeenshire countryside are quite breath-taking.
Maud is a rural village situated in the centre of the Buchan area of rural Aberdeenshire and is ideally placed between the larger towns of Turriff, Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Inverurie. The village itself has a shop, café, gym, petrol station and doctor’s surgery.
Mintlaw is a larger town which offers a large selection of food shops, MACBI gym, chemist, dentist, doctors, petrol station along with numerous takeaways. It also has a beautiful 230-acre park, Aden Country Park, which has a large children’s play park with swings, adventure play, seesaw and the popular zip slide. The sensory garden is a secluded area with scented plants designed to stimulate all the senses, an old ruinous country house and long meandering walks with a heritage centre with farming museum and café.
We are so blessed to have Buchan Formartine and Buchan Way just a few hundred metres from the cottage, the route follows a former railway line and is ideal for walking, cycling and running. It opened in the early 1990s it extends from the fringes of Aberdeen, Dyce for 26 miles north to Maud where it splits with branches heading east to Peterhead, 15 miles and north 16 miles to Fraserburgh.
Explore Deer Abbey the tranquil ruins of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1219, just located 1.9 miles from the cottage.
Aikey Brae stone circles are well worth a visit after a short climb up Parkhouse hill. They are the most original, complete, and "unimproved" stone circle on view in northern Aberdeenshire.
Cullykhan Bay, Fraserburgh and New Aberdour have some beautiful beaches and coastal villages such as Pennan, Gardenstown and Crovie are an absolute gem of a place to visit.
Further along the coast you will come to Macduff which has a Marine Aquarium featuring marine life from the Moray Firth, Scotland's largest bay. Meet hundreds of fish, enjoy the spectacular view into the deep kelp reef exhibit - only one of its kind in the UK. Look out for the octopus pod and shark nursery seahorses.
Golfers are well provided for in Aberdeenshire with a wealth of golf courses to choose from. Fraserburgh Golf Club is the oldest in Aberdeenshire, established in 1777. The traditional links course continues to challenge members and visitors alike, it is the fifth oldest club in Scotland and the seventh oldest in the world.
Bennachie is an enjoyable walk which rewards with a beautiful view at the top. It’s highest summit of Oxen Craig at 528 metres to Millstone Hill and its most popular peak, Mither Tap. There is an extensive network of paths for you to explore - from a 15-minute woodland stroll to an all-day hike over the moorland hill tops.
Scotland’s third largest city, Aberdeen, “The Granite City” is a 30-minute drive away with lots of places waiting to be explored.
