So let’s talk what happens in a vineyard in the winter..

We wait until the leaves fall off in Autumn the weather gets cooler the vines go dormant … then we start pruning the vines.

Old wood: We remove canes that are small, weak, or too far from the main trunk usually to pencil thick

Unwanted canes: We remove canes that are growing in the wrong direction

The canes are removed just above a node to create a fruiting cane.

The canes are gently bent into place on the wires and secured in place using tape guns.

We always leave at least one alternative cane just in case the original fruiting shoot fails.

We use Sheep 🐑 to ‘mow’ the vineyard in winter and we use their redundant fleeces to prevent w**d growth, the lanolin in the fleece repels slugs and snails and stops them eating the new buds and leaves when they start growing in spring.

We pray !! We pray for a frost free April & May ( bud burst) we pray for a continuous 10* degrees, we pray for gentle rainfall.. too much and it damages the fruit set (after bud burst) not enough and we get small grapes.🍇
