A few miles from Beacon Cottage on the road to Whitby, you’ll find the Hole of Horcum, one of the most well known spots in the North Yorkshire Moors. Park at the car park on A169 and cross the road for a stunning view. If you’re feeling energetic, there are a few good circular walks from the car park including via the beautiful village of Levisham where you can stop for a drink and a bite to eat at The Horseshoe Inn.

A quick stopover at the cottage to undertake the usual end of summer checks and treated to the most amazing views of the northern lights. No need to go abroad to see them when they are here on your doorstep!

Pickering castle is just a few steps away from the cottage and offers fantastic views over the town and beyond.

Pickering Castle; Richard the 2nd was held captive here before being put to death, by means unknown, at Pontefract in 1400…

Richard was one of the youngest kings of England, inheriting the throne at just 10 years of age.

One of my favourite things to do when staying at Beacon Cottage is walking in the moors. You don’t have to go far to be away from the crowds of tourists and be surrounded by beautiful scenery where the only sounds are those of the incredible range of wildlife who call this their home.

Spring is definitely in the air, and there's nothing better than seeing the first lambs gambolling in the dales and the return of three of our iconic wading birds, curlew, golden plover and lapwings to the high moorland.

Our top tip for March - The aerobatic courting displays of the lapwing are a real treat. Its wide boxy wings give a ‘lapping’ sound as it flies steadily skyward. Eventually it turns to plunge downward and then twists and rolls, seemingly out of control.

Head north out of Osmotherley on the Cleveland Way and up onto Scarth Wood Moor for good sightings.

Pickering is a charming market town and the cottage is perfectly located to enjoy all it has to offer. We particularly enjoy visiting in December when the Christmas decorations are up 🎅🏻🎄

Be sure to visit the Black Swan when you visit Pickering. Lovely cosy and friendly pub just a short walk from Beacon Cottage. Drinks and food highly recommended too 😊

There’s something for all ages in Pickering and there were certainly lots of little ones (and bigger ones) enjoying the Santa Special train ride from Pickering station. The historic station is just a short walk from the cottage.
