See how the place names bring the past to life, creating a fascinating link between us in the 21st century and the people who once populated these glens.

Just now on the farm at Fincastle, the cows are grazing with their calves at foot on the hill ground. The pasture is herb rich and keeps them satisfied until they come onto the lower ground in September. We have sheared our tups & hoggs and have turned our attention to silage & hay making – Weather permitting.

An dràsda, air an tuath ann a’ Fonn Chaisteal, tha an crodh agus na laoigh ag ionaltradh air an talamh àrd, gus an teàrnaich iad gu na pàirceananan anns an t-Sultainn. Tha sinn air na reathaichean agus na h-obhaisgean a rùsgadh agus bithidh sinn a sàs ann a’ feur agus “silage” aig deireadh a’mhios seo neo toiseach an Iuchair………..ma cheidicheas a’ sìde!

What to expect on your tour:

The tour will start at 2pm and will take about 3hrs.

After gathering at The Mains of Fincastle Farm, you will be transported by truck and trailer to one of the highest points on the farm, at 1,300ft.

Surrounded by stunning scenery, we will begin our exploration of the Gaelic Place Names, starting of course, with the hills.

Having boarded the transport again, we will walk and talk for approximately 40mins, from the ruined folly, along the limestone ridge, and back to the transport.

Then, it’s down to the steading for a cup of tea and a homemade scone, and a chance to ask any questions you might have.

Teannaidh an turas aig 2 uair feasgar agus mairidh e 3 uairean a’ thìde.

An dèidh tighinn cruinn còmhla, dìridh sinn gu ìre 1,300th ann a’ bhan agus trèilear.

An uairsin, bheir sinn sùil air na h-ainmean àite Gàidhlig, a’coiseachd ’sa còmhradh, ’sa gabhail tlachd anns an airinneachd àlainn a tha mun cuairt.

Tillidh sinn an uairsin airson cupa tì agus sgona, agus coram tuilleadh cheistean a’chuir, ma tha sin iomchaidh.

Hello, I’m Seonag Barbour, a native Gaelic speaker from Valtos, in the North East of Skye. After graduating from Glasgow University, I taught Gaelic at secondary level and at Sabhal Mor Ostaig. Marriage to Andrew brought me to Highland Perthshire, where we have spent the last 30 years running our organic farm.

I look forward to exploring the Gaelic landscape with you, gaining a better understanding of the place names together, and enjoying some wonderful scenery along the way.

Is mise Seonag Barbour, a Bhaltos air Taobh Sear an Eilein Sgiathanaich. An dèidh Oilthigh Ghlaschu fhàgail, bha mi a’teagasg aig ìre àrd sgoile agus ann an Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. An dèidh Andrew a phòsadh, ghluais mi gu Siorrachd Pheairt, far a bheil sinn air a bhith ri tuathanachas organaig bho chionn 30 bliadhna.

Bithidh e na thoileachas dhomh cuairt a ghabhail comhla ruibh, agus barrachd tuigse fhaighinn air na h-ainmean aite Gaidhlig a tha cho paillt anns a' sgìre eireachdail a tha seo.
