I saw a hot air balloon taking off on my way to work this morning, it was a beautiful morning and I thought how stunning York would look from the air. So it seemed like a good reason to repost this fantastic pic of York taken from a hot air balloon in 2018 by šŸŽˆšŸ˜. Got to be one of the best pics Iā€™ve seen of the Minster and city. .

Making the most of the last days of summer before autumn really takes hold.

We took the dog for a walk in Millington Woods. Did you know there has been a wood here for at least 1000 years!! It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. These days itā€™s a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) as itā€™s one of the richest woodlands in the Yorkshire Wolds.

York was looking gorgeous today.

This is Lendal Bridge which opened in 1863. It was designed by architect Thomas Page who also designed Westminster Bridge in London.

The bridge helped deal with all the new visitors arriving at the railway station but it put the ferryman out of business. He had operated between the two towers you can see in the pic. However he received compensation of Ā£15 and a horse and cart!

9 years on and itā€™s still a privilege to guide inside this magnificent building and you never stop learning new stuff about it!

*York and Mobility Issues*

If you have mobility issues you may be worried about visiting York famed as it is for its narrow cobbled streets but donā€™t be! I had a group of 22 today and 2 of the group were using mobility scooters. We followed the usual route around all of the major sites including inside

All of this was done without any need to adapt the tour. There are plenty of dropped kerbs and large parts of the city are pedestrianised in the daytime making access even easier.

Inside the Minster there are ramps and lifts. You can also borrow a wheelchair for your visit.

So please donā€™t let any worries put you off visiting this beautiful city.
Pic is of an unusually quiet Shambles for this morningā€™s tour!

Note how Iā€™m wearing a visor due to Covid restrictions. Iā€™m so happy to be through that! I did no guiding for nearly 18 months and I missed it!!

If you fancy a peaceful, pretty spot in York to sit or perhaps have your lunch then head your way St Anthonyā€™s Hall Gardens.

If youā€™ve walked the city walls you may have spotted these lovely gardens tucked away behind St Cuthbertā€™s church. See if you can spot the walls in some of my pics.
The last photo shows the gardens from the walls. Well worth a visit to escape the bustle of the city! .

Happy National Dog Day. šŸ¶ šŸ•ā€šŸ¦ŗšŸ¾šŸ•

Hereā€™s our pup enjoying the delights of Robin Hoodā€™s Bay. Yorkshire is a brilliant place to bring your dog as itā€™s incredibly dog friendly. They are welcome all over the place so they can have as nice a holiday as you!

Hello šŸ‘‹ Iā€™m back. Not sure if youā€™d noticed Iā€™d gone! But I had a much needed social media break to enjoy the school holidays. I wasnā€™t planning to post so soon BUT if you know me, youā€™ll know I love an animal trail and the tansy beetles have arrived in York šŸ˜

The tansy beetle is an endangered species which only lives on a 30 mile stretch of the River Ouse around York. In honour of that these gorgeous sculptures have popped up around the city the summer.

There are 17 to spot, hereā€™s 3 Iā€™ve found so far. If you really know York you might be able to spot a very well known York person in pic 1 šŸ˜‰

Iā€™ve spent the last few days commuting from our holiday cottage in Robin Hoodā€™s Bay to York (the joys of being self employed- always working!), my journey has taken me through the brilliantly named village of Ugglebarnby!

Mr EY says it sounds like an argument as in ā€œI had a right ugglebarnby with my wife last nightā€ šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Itā€™s actually a Norse or Viking name. ā€˜Byā€™ on the end of a place name means village. So it was Uglubarthrā€™s village or farm. Uglubarthr would have been a Viking man and his name translates as Owl Beard. Now not many owls have beards; but the Eagle Owl, native to the Viking homeland of Scandinavia, sometimes has discolouration of tufted feathers on its chin!

So this explains the owl on the village sign šŸ¦‰ šŸ¦‰šŸ¦‰šŸ¦‰šŸ¦‰šŸ¦‰

When your group are on an Anglo Saxon themed tour of England then what are the 2 things you HAVE to show them in York?

1. The York Helmet - discovered by chance in 1982, this magnificent helmet dates from the 8th century and is intricately designed. It takes pride of place in

2. Just round the corner from the museum is the Anglian Tower. One of only two non ecclesiastical Anglo Saxon structures in the UK! It was constructed at some point between the mid 7th -9th centuries and weā€™re not really sure what it was used for! Itā€™s built into part of the Roman city walls so perhaps a watch tower, if you have any ideas let me know!

Goathland station was looking gorgeous yesterday - such lovely flowers. Swipe to see if the puppy was impressed!

Well worth a visit even without a train going through! If it looks familiar - itā€™s Hogsmeade station in the Harry Potter films.

On this day 40 years ago, lightning struck the roof of the South Transept of York Minster setting fire to the wooden roof.

Due to the quick thinking of firefighters, they managed to bring the blaze under control by aiming their water cannons at the roof timbers. This caused the roof to collapse which stopped the fire spreading further.

Luckily the rose window had been re-leaded several years previously, so although it shattered into 1000s of pieces, it held in place until the glaziers could bring it down and stick it all back together. This took nearly 4 years to do!

One of my favourite stories to tell is about one part of the rebuilding - the Minster approached Blue Peter, the longest running childrenā€™s TV programme in the world and asked them to hold a competition to design 6 new roof bosses. Over 32,000 children entered (including me!) and the 6 winners had their drawings immortalised into the bosses that now sit proudly over the South Transept.

As part of the 40th year events, there is an exhibition in the North Transept with some fantastic photos from eyewitnesses. You can also see the drawings the Blue Peter winners submitted. Itā€™s amazing how close to the original designs the carvers got!

Great day guiding 3 Americans around Fountains Abbey followed by a lovely lunch and a stroll round the city of Ripon.

Whilst going to puppy training Iā€™ve spotted a little church across the valley - so as any good tour guide would do after todayā€™s training I took the family there to investigate!

Itā€™s the church of All Saints at Kirby Underdale and itā€™s a lovely church with its Norman tower and plenty of interesting features.

I really liked the beautiful stained glass - particularly the pheasant as you always see plenty of them round here. In a wall there is a stone carving believed to be Roman showing the god Mercury.

Surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds, itā€™s well worth a visit.

On this day in 1483 Richard, Duke of Gloucester began ruling England having deposed his nephew. He is better known as King Richard III, one of our most notorious kings.

He only reigned for 2 years and was the last ruler from the Royal House of York. He had many connections to Yorkshire -

Pic 1 is Middleham Castle - Richard lived here for part of his childhood and his son was born here.
Pic 2 is which was a favourite residence for Richard.
Pic 3 is the Old Palace where Richard had his son invested as Prince of Wales.

On this day in 1981, the Humber Bridge opened to traffic. Spanning 1.4 miles across the Humber Estuary, it was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world and an impressive feat of engineering. 43 years on itā€™s dropped to number 12 but itā€™s still an impressive sight!

Finally summerā€™s here and is looking lovely.

The building is the medieval hospitium which was used by people visiting St Maryā€™s Abbey as lodgings. The River Ouse would have been nearer to the building so the archway would have been a water gate allowing boats to sail right up!
These days itā€™s a rather lovely wedding venue šŸ’
