St David’s Day is Wales’ National Saints Day celebrated across the country on March 1st every year. But, who is St David? Why is he so important in Wales and how does the daffodil & leek fit into it all? Answering all your questions about Wales’ favourite David.

Who was St David?

David is the patron saint of Wales and perhaps the most famous of British saints. It is known that he became a priest, engaged in missionary work, and founded many monasteries, including his principal abbey in southwestern Wales.

Why is he so important?

There are a lot of prophecies and miracles that St David (Dewi Sant) is said to have performed .

He is said to have cured his tutor of blindness with the sign of the cross and brought a dead boy back to life by splashing the child's face with tears.

Daffodil or Leek?

The daffodil and leek are both national symbols of Wales and you’ll see them being displayed, or worn on St David’s Day as a sign of national pride and celebration. The leek is the national emblem of Wales and according to legend was created by St David himself, who ordered Welsh soldiers to wear them on their helmets during battle. (And they won thanks to them!) The daffodil is believed to closely resemble a leek flower and since they are more common than leek flowers, the daffodil is worn instead.
